Hello from SF Bay Area!

We're a 3-person group looking for transportation partner(s) to hike the Subway on Tuesday May 19th! We'll be traversing the traditional route from Wildcat trailhead down to Left Fork. We'll have a rental car and we're hoping a small group in a similar situation as us (or larger groups with multiple cars) will be willing to team up with us to save the $25-35/person shuttle fee.

We're experienced climbers w/ anchor/rappel trainings, but this will be our first (of hopefully many) canyoneering trip.

Thanks in advance! =)

Not to discourage you at all. But tuesdays are really hard to coordinate with people. And Subway tickets are very limited so this could end up being a really difficult task. I've done Subway probably 10 times or so. But 4 of those times we were in a similar situation as yourself. One time we arrived at 8AM and found another group to coordinate with. And the other 3 times we just started walking up the road and the very first car coming by picked us up.

So I'm not guaranteeing you obviously. But $25/person shuttle is rediculous IMO. People in southern Utah are really nice and friendly. I found it a refreshing change when I moved here from San Diego.

Hopefully plan (A) works out though and you find someone to coordinate with. :)

Do you already have your permits? If so, any open spots on the permit? Offering an open spot or two on a Subway permit really helps eliminate the partner/shuttle accusation problem.

Food for thought....

Thanks much for the helpful suggestions!

We already have our permits and unfortunately don't have any open spots. However it looks like there are still plenty of spots available for that date (24 as of last night).

hitchhiking sounds like a great idea... a bit risky time-wise, but hopefully enough cars travel up the road that it wouldn't be a problem =)

Actually, you have a permit reservation. It is usually easy to add a couple places to the permit when you pick it up. Please invite others to join you, it adds glue to the community, and is... more fun!!

Yes, hitching usually works. No, 25$ / person is not ridiculous. If you think you can do it for less, maybe you should start a business doing so.

Hey, The Cricket of Death lives in the St George Area, maybe he could come over and pick you up and shuttle up to Wildcat Cyn Trailhead. Sounds like he would do it for 10$ a head... a more reasonable fee!

You're not paying for the 8 mile ride from one trailhead to the other, you're paying for the 2 hours round trip from Springdale required to run the shuttle. And lots of other expenses. If you think the price is ridiculous, then don't pay it.

Hitching has always worked for me, but that's usually on weekends.

Some helpful hitching info:

Hitching a ride between closely spaced trailheads is also popular. A large and easy to read sign stating "Next Trailhead" really speeds this process up. If you are hitching for the Subway its good to know that hitching up in the morning and down in the afternoon offers the best results.

Zion Shuttle info here:

One reason the cost of legit shuttles is skyhigh is the insurance companies.

In that case, please do join us (if anyone's interested, that is =)

I know Tuesday's not the most convenient day of the week, but unfortunately our schedule is pretty much fixed with flights and lodging already booked u__u

if not, we'll be hitchhiking, hopefully complete with big signs and buried beers =)

Thanks again for everyone's input!

It may be easier to have one person hitch a ride instead of three. Might be easier when you are dry and smell good in the morning. YMMV

With all this fabulous advise I don't see how you can go wrong..... :lol8:

But not one person has mentioned the sure fire way to hitch a ride.... put the hot chick in the group out on the road holding the sign.... it never fails, guaranteed you will have a ride in under 3 minutes

Hehehe If I lived in Springdale or Rockville I would seriously do it for $10. Just not on a Tuesday, I gotta work! I would clarify my earlier statement to say that I don't think the shuttle services are trying to rip people off. they should charge whatever the market will bear. What I mean is that paying $75 -$100 for a guaranteed ride vs taking my chance finding a nice soul to hook me up. I'll take the chance on a nice soul based on the community of southern Utah. And have so far been successful 100% of the time. Could be just blind luck though.

Hey just got another idea! It's roughly 8-9 miles between trailheads right? Could you rent a bike from Zion rentals and have one person bike it? That hill is a total bitch towards the end though. Would not recommend unless you are in really decent shape.

And it is a big help that most everyone driving up that hill knows about the Subway, and happily help people out with a ride. Folks I've gotten rides with pick people up there repeatedly.

Hard bike ride, at the end of a long day.

If you didn't want to hitchhike or hire a ride, the Subway can be made into a nice loop hike by using the trail out just before Little Creek, but it is a few miles longer than using a car shuttle. I still think it would be easier than trying to bike it. The first time we did the Subway, we used this loop.

I've never seen a trail out of Little Creek and it's not on any maps I have.... so I'm guessing it must be a very primitive trail? Hard to follow? over grown?

That being said, after looking at the maps, if a good trail existed out of Little Creek it would certainly make a nice loop. Also easy to avoid having your permit checked, as the lower trailhead is the permit checking capital of Zion.... not that anyone would ever think of not getting a permit. :haha:
