I'm buying this as soon as it's off of pre-order. No one has it just yet that I can find. I've needed a waterproof camera forever, but I've been hooked on cannon and didn't want to buy a Pentax or any other brand.
I lost a camera to the murky depths of Kolob in Oct., then turned right around around and dropped my recently purchased new camera in the Ciolorado River in Feb! It's about time Cannon came out with something that's Randi proof! :2thumbs:

Nice find, I'm a Canon fan.

I'm guessing it will have the tripod mount too, the 1/4" thread. It's got my specifications for movie too, 640 X 480 30fps, 16:9 lens

Looks like the price will be around $300, not too bad. The Olympus Stylus with similar specs is a little cheaper right now though.

Hmmm, don't see any facts which are better than any other competitor in that range.... what's so special about this one besides the name?

Yes but.... it is still just a click and shoot. If you are into DSLR and trusting your ability to protect your invesmtent( I pack in a Nikon D50) the
Nikon D90 is on my next cameara list. It has a HD Video ( 760p) feature that I am dieing(not literalty) to use.

Having a small compact durable camera in the pack always works out well no matter what your primary camera may be. Also a major reason I pack one around is video.
I am gong to wait for the price to drop I am guessing in a year this little guy will be around 200 bucks..... well worth it I think.

I am also pretty stoked on the new Canon T1i 15.1 MP. Only 800 for the body but again I am going to wait a while for the price to drop a bit more.

Well it is all about physics. The greater the apparture means the greater surface area of exposure which means more light and more data captured. You will never get deep rich photos nor good white balancing in a click and shoot camera lens.

This looks like a great camera. Too bad it just came out as I just bought an Olympus Stylus 850SW which is also waterproof, dustproof, shockproof.
These kind of cameras are great for trail riding in the desert. They get dirty, just wash 'em off. You drop it, pick it up and shoot again.

My Panasonic just couldn't handle the dust and froze up.

Perfect for emailing and trip reports. :2thumbs:

Very true

Yet only a few years ago everyone shooting film thought along those same lines in regards to digital photography.
So ya never know.

Finally a camera I'm interested in. Canons are the only point-n-shoots I've found that take descent pictures in the slots.

YMMV

i can tell you that the other competitors in that range have horrible photo quality. while i have not seen any photos from this particular Canon yet, I can tell you that based on my Canon P&S experiences, I have high hopes that this one will offer better quality photos.....i think that's why people are excited about this camera.

only time will tell at this point though... this particular Canon

A difference I see is the max aperture is f2.8 compared to f3.5 on most of the other WP cameras. I'm no expert and you photo gurus can correct me if I'm wrong but larger aperture means more light hits the sensor and pics come out brighter, especially in low light like canyons... right? I've not been impressed with picture quality on any of the WP cameras so I've still not bought one. I'm interested to see how this one does as I'd love to have a burly point and shoot to use when I don't want to lug my SLR around.

I am just messing around Alex.
Canon point and shoots always seem to produce excellent images.

f2.8 is going to allow more light into the lens to provide a faster shutter speed but shorter depth of field, great for action shots and low light situations.

I guess I must have missed the aperture f2.8 on this one. Ya that's a huge improvement for waterproof cameras. Though on the other hand, the lens isn't wide enough, it's only 35mm. My Olympus has 28mm. I can tell a huge difference especially on my raft when I take videos.

I would have liked to see a better video quality, seems like 720p is becoming a standard now.

I'm a big Canon fan these days. Very excited. I bring my DSLR in canyons, but I don't take all that many pictures. This unit might be super sweet.

It also has ISO rating up to 3200, and the Optical Image Stabilizer system which works really well. Canon's build quality tends to be quite a bit better than the competition, methinks.

Oh sure, a week after I buy a Pentax W60.

We've had a couple of Canons over the years. Our old S2 is still working great - we love it dearly. I would seriously consider this one if I hadn't made a purchase last week. I do like the zoom (out and in) on my new Pentax, though. It has great video res, too. Looking forward to trying out in the field next week!

I still don't see why you guys are all googoo gaagaa over this camera. F2.8 is the only advantage this Canon has over Olympus or Pentax. W60 offers HD video and better wide angle lens, plus higher zoom. I guess let's wait for the results to do the real world comparisons.

3200 on P/S camera... it's almost as useful as pimping 10 megapixel in a $200 dollar walmart special.

You think? :ne_nau:
I've actually been super impressed with how Randi "tolerant" most of my canon's have been! Even the canon which took a 40' fall into a Kolob pool still works! Barely (it doesn't work in manual mode anymore, the zoom feature doesn't work & a bunch of the buttons are broken), but it does still take pictures! That particular camera been previously dunked, and dropped "open lens" in the sand. You were there Tom, in Foolin around when that happened!

I was able to take that camera apart and get the sand out with a paintbrush, re-assemble and it worked. And after the dunking, I was able to take it apart & use a blow-dryer on it, re-assemble it and it worked again! Hank nicknamed it the "Zombie" cuz I kept ressurecting it!

What had me choosing Canon in the first place was the shutter speed.
Out of all the camera's a I tried, the Canon seemed to have the fastest focus and sutter speed. Don't know that it makes a difference, but to my untrained eye, it sold me. And the Canon is apparently built like a Cannon! How much more so this new one!?! I'm excited about getting one!

Take a picture with the Pentex and take a picture with the Canon and you will see why some of us are googoo gaagaa.... or maybe not...

From my past experience the Canon takes a much better picture in low light (read slot canyon).....

I probably depends on what you use your camera for to some degree. I shoot very little if any video so that is not an important feature to me. But probably 50% of the pictures I take are in low light conditions and the Canon has worked well for me. I also had good pictures from a Nikon, but the camera was not as durable, which again, is something I need in the slots.

I did own a Pentex.... for less than a week.... I hated that camera.... I traded it in at Inkley's for the Nikon mentioned above.

your mileage may vary.....

Alex, Canon has the P/S market buy the nuts right now, have you ever owned one and do you really think the Pentax and Olympus are going to out preform Canon? I previously owned a Canon S3 P/S and I was always pleased with the image quality of that camera.
But I get what your saying... we can only wait and see the true image quality of the D10

More pics of the D10 are finding their way onto Flickr
I really dig the camo!

I personally wouldn't buy a camera due to color of its case

Yes, I owned Pentax, Olympus, Sony, Canon cameras. Canon S1 IS was my favorite camera so far, pictures quality/ease of use. I don't roll with you big boys in SLR world, I tried all kinds of SLR and it's just not me.

Another D10 comparison, again, there is nothing shocking in that camera to me. Besides F2.8, I don't see any advantages yet.

Specs I look for:
Video frame rate & size
waterproof
decent photo quality (let software do the rest)
overall pocket size

and PRICE- because these cameras do get used, abused, and replaced.

For me the TS1 w/28mm widest vs. the D10s 35mm widest would be the most important factor. 35 often is just not enough to frame the shots you want between foreground and background.
