Those familiar with Everett Ruess and 20yr-old vagabond from California who vanished after stopping in Escalante, Utah - has been found.

Read it in the National Geographic: Adventure magazine. Although it comes out April 21st, I get them early and the article is really good and amazing with the pictures and quotes that this young lad wrote.

In a nutshell, it says that he was murdered in Arizona by 3 Ute Indians. Genetic testing and prove it was him at the burial site.

Wow! mystery now solved.

crazy. i'm reading vagabond for beauty right now. i kind of liked that it seemed like no one would ever know what happened...

have to read the rest of the article next week i guess. although it seems strange to me that he was supposedly murdered in comb wash with his two burros. unless he had purchased more burros, i was under the impression all his livestock was found near davis gulch, in corrals.

thanks for the post jman. :2thumbs:

Hmm good memory u have. There was an expedition led by a man but not until 5 months later was there a search party sent for him. From grand gulch is body was located 50 miles to the east of where the burros where corraled. They article said that Ruess inscribed his name on pictographs as"Nemo" which means "no one" but the search party was certain that somewhere somehow Ruess explored the region and later was murdered. This was the last of "evidence" and his route and thus led them to search in that area. It wasn't until the grandpa told his daughter that he once saw a Anglo being chased down and killed by Ute Indians, which led them to change their search location.

Wow - amazing. Really neat to have the mystery solved, but there was a certain romance, a fascination about someone just disappearing off the face of the earth. Hell, DB Cooper still gets press, and he was a bad guy.

Interesting article.

What did you guys think about the medicine man? Do you believe in that sort of thing? I usually dismiss such claims but there have been a lot of crazy things happen over the years so I really don't know what to think.

I surely do Dan.

I know your opinions on religion, but I guess I just don't know what to think about things like the medicine man telling him he shouldn't have touched that body, or the other medicine man saying it was because of her Grandfather.

Sure, a lot of things can be attributed to coincidence but there are sure a lot of little things like that which go unaccounted.

I think he is a man of FAITH.

Which is the same thing I think about Priests, Bishops, Cardinals, Profits, Popes, Mullahs, ect....

"Why People Believe Weird Things (http://www.amazon.ca/People-Believe-Weird-Things-Pseudoscience/dp/0716733870)" by Michael Shermer, and "The Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (http://www.amazon.ca/Demon-Haunted-World-Carl-Sagan/dp/0345409469)" by Carl Sagan are two books that leap to mind, explaining these phenomena. There are innumerable ways in which the human mind will create patterns and confirm the biases of the believer. The conviction of someone describing a paranormal or supernatural situation does not mean that that is how it happened.

So my answer is no, I don't believe it. (But you probably guessed that! :haha: )

I loved Demon Haunted World. Carl Sagan's Contact started me down the road but Demon Haunted World really lead me to question religion. It was all rational thought from there. :haha:
I haven't read Why People Believe Weird Things, thanks for the tip.
