Grand Canyon: Down to the river the unusual way

Going down into the inner gorge via the well known trails from South Rim or North Rim is often done. Let me describe another trail not that often used: Withmore Canyon.

Withmore Canyon is located on the north side of G.C. far more to the west that the trails mentioned above. It

Way cool! Been there lots of times! Did ya see the pictographs at the bottom of the trail? You go to the river and do an about face and head along the trail up, a bit along the ledges. There are red pictographs on the overhangs. Very nice. Then, there is a huge etching of a Phoenix Mining company logo from way back. Nice pictures! Not many people get down there. You are right. Long long drive. Whew! Thanks !

No we didn`t see any pictographs. A reason why:

We had trouble down there! My wife had a cold and had taken some medicine. The result was that her blood pressure went down. Dizziness and other symptoms. I had only one thing in mind - bring her up safely!

I loved the hike out of the canyon on Whitmore after our rafting trip. Great photos. :2thumbs: It was a LONG drive out of there. Best nap I had in a long time.

It sure looks like Kanab to me... I hiked up that trail a few years ago too, while on a river trip. It was really disconcerting to hike up there, thinking that I was way out in the boonies, far away from everyone, only to see a bunch of folks on quads buzzing around on the roads up there. It was good to get back to the boats and float on down to Diamond Creek...

Nice pics. Is this the road out to toroweap (or tuweep if you prefer)? If it is, any idea how close to the campground or rim I can get in a low slung car? Would love to take my relatives out there next time.

Nope. Never wrote that one up. We wrote up an article on the River Trip we did, but never added the exit. I don't think I even took photos of the exit, but it was great.

Toroweap is THE best rim of the grand canyon and least populated too. You can make the drive - but you'll be going quite slow in your low car. From St. George, to AZ strip, to Mt. Trumbull, to Toroweap is about 2 1/2 - 3 hr drive (one way) and no gas station anywhere. But it has some great views of the canyon.

Whitmore canyon is way different from toroweap just fyi.

But if you do go the St. George route to AZ strip - there are some really fun icecaves on the AZ strip on Mt. Trumbull to explore.
