I found out about the closing of the store that I had spent the last 24 years with just before thanksgiving. Sort of a shock, but I sensed it. Good run and many GREAT memories! On to the new. Talks had begun a year earlier, but had been discounted. I went to Jason the day after I found out about Outdoor Outlet and asked for employment....I can push a broom, mop a floor, scrub a toilet! Nope...he wanted to push forward with plans of the previous discussions! Lets open a new outdoor store! The Desert Rat it is! Well, I thought I'd share some pictures of the progression from an existing Custom Picture Framing Shop of just under 4000 square feet to the construction of a new outdoor store "The Desert Rat" scheduled to open April of '09'. It's been awesome from the planning stages to the development phase. I'm so excited to get-er-open that you can't imagine! Awesome people to have been working with and so look forward to the real deal. I'm so psyched to have Matt, Pam, Jason, Jan (Yeah!), Tanya (the best hiking partner extrordinaire and business partner), maybe some marketing/merchandising by "Jolee"- Charly from last hike, and the help from the great list of friends too numerous to mention! Check-er-out! I know that these pictures will bore most of you, but you just wait until I get pictures of the staff coming on-board! You think Tanya is hot in her Avatar? You best come and let her help you pick out some gear....you'll then get to have some real personal attention! But really, I'm so psyched about the quality of the folks coming on board.......this will be really the fun adventure! Yee-haw! I just gotta say "Muito Obrigado" to all of those friends that have trusted and supported me all these years. I'll do my best to not let you down! Thanks soooooooo MUCH!

Wow 4000 sq/ft is really aggressive. I had no idea you were going so big. If anyone can pull this off, it's you. So who are going to be your competitors in town? Kimball Jones and Sportsman's warehouse right? You'll definitely have an edge over Kimball in that you'll have specialty clothes and canyoneer shoes. If I'm not mistaken they just have hiking stuff. And Sportsman warehouse just has ropes and wetsuits if I recall correctly. No cams, ascenders, etc.
I think the main edge edge you'll have is your personal service. I felt really good shopping from you in that I knew you'd explain how everything worked and you knew your "stuff" extremely well. Without being condescending like most pro's tend to be toward us "noobs". My only concern really is the huge size shop you chose. But I'm sure you know your finances and have them well in hand. Go big or go home right? Best of luck and looking forward to the grand opening.
:2thumbs:
We will have to make a trip down this year and check out the store. Looks like its going to be awesome! Best of luck!

Well...March 15 opening passed us up.......April 1 came up quickly......now we're shooting for 2nd week of April! :ne_nau: Not that we've (Matt, Pam and I) haven't been working hard at it, but the little things just seem to come up! It's called "sequences". Gotta learn to stay away from "sequential" progression, commonly known as being sidetracked by the little smouldering piles that crop up during normal tasks! Focus on a task and get it done, then move on. Got the wood floor laid mostly now, but need to get trim up, finish up bathroom, lay the carpet, get fixtures finished...etc, etc, etc! Thank you for the delivery Tom! Sorry I missed you. Anyway...it's not that I don't have inventory; Tomorrow will be a productive day! A few pictures to see where The Desert Rat stands as of March 31! It's good to see everyone popping in periodically and offering support. Good news...A Cafe will be opening right next door and we'll have a door leading into the restaurant as well! Ahhhh yes! A morning cup of espresso to start the day!

I know very little Spanish, or whatever you are all speaking.
Are you all open?? I don't suppose you are open on Sundays?
Well maybe if I can find the Desert Rat we will stop in and check the store out on Mon if you are open. So some place near St George Blvd and Bluff St. is that anywhere near Sunset Blvd?
tanya

It should be open in about a week or so. The store will be open 7 days a week with shorter hours on Saturday and Sunday, but Bo and workers are usually in the store now even before its open, and the doors are unlocked.
It's the corner of St. George Blvd and Bluff, a major intersection in town. Sunset, the road to Santa Clara, intersects with Bluff, and the store is not to far from that intersection .. just down the road from there.
Bo's wife is from Brazil, so my guess is that he is speaking Portuguese which he, his kids and wife speak.. or is that Spanish you are written there Bo? I know you sort of speak that.

GOOD LUCK TO YA!!
Wanna job? :ne_nau: Really good deals for employees! :haha: Thank you very much and you are welcome here anytime. It was so cool to put a face to the folks I've met on the internet. You have some really great kids and it's soooo cool that you have them interested in "outdoor activities"! Let me know if you are down here sometime and wouldn't mind a "slowpoke" tagging along on a ride or hike! I bet you guys have a BLAST!

Bo, congrats on the new store. I'll stop by when I wander up that way in June... Hope to see you in the Canyon one of these days...

Thank you Hank! I'm so gald that I've changed from the construction mode to the having fun "sales" mode, but I have to admit it's been fun watching the progression. I also hope to see you in the Canyon one of these days! See you in June! :2thumbs:

I just want to finish up the night by saying Thanks! Thanks to all my friends, but a very special thanks to my very special friends Matt, Pamela and Tanya. We've done it guys (and gals)! We're up and running!
Tanya....you win top honours though for opening day.........$800 to the couple from California wins saleslady (or salesman) of the day! Thanks! Thank you for the great work in helping get us going.
Matt.....no more hardwood floors OK? My knees hurt! Dude...I think we did pretty damn good work on the store! Lets just buy a couple Greyhound tickets to Maine? Waddya say!?
Pam...oh Pam! Can you imagine if I had ordered womens Prana?! :roflol: You are the best. You also saved my and Matts knees by 75% in your invaluable work on the floor! Thanks from the bottom of my knees! :five: :2thumbs: PS: Lets go rafting!

If you need any part time help over the summer I'm up for it. It's tough to get a summer job since I'm only available summer (teaching the rest of the year) and have random days/weeks with basketball camps.
I may be able to swing by and say hi/check out the shop tomorrow.

I feel lucky to have a job there. It seems like every hour someone is either calling you or stoping by begging for a job. :haha: You are fun to work for is why. :five:

Well...we were too busy to take any pictures, but our friday night Grand Opening kickoff was a HIT! Don't know how many showed up but it was well over 100. Thanks to all that attended. Thanks for the slide presentation Tom! I think we've got a new wave of canyoneers about to blossom.
It was good to have so many familiar faces and friends attend! Felicia and John, Win and Yo, Annette and Greg, Bonnie Schwartz, Jeff, Brad, Eric.....dang just too many to say thank you to! I appreciate ecveryone for making this event a success. Now it's time to start planning the next event. Still have a lot of beer from Zion Canyon Brewing Company leftover? If you are in St. George today (Saturday the 20th, please stop by and check out The Desert Rat and have a cold one on me!
