View Full Version : The DJIA Game

rockgremlin
03-02-2009, 03:22 PM
If you've been keeping an eye on the Dow lately, it seems that traders are hell bent on driving stocks lower regardless of economic news - good or bad. Many of us grimace as the value of our retirement accounts drops through the floor. Well grimace no more....the purpose of this game is to give back some of what you may have lost.

Here's how to play:

1. Guess what you think the value of the Dow Jones Industrial Average will be at it's close on Friday.

2. Submissions must be made before 3:00pm on Tuesday of that same week.

3. Whoever guesses closest to the actual value will win exactly $1.00 - yes, one dollar.

4. Winners will not be paid until the DJIA rises above 9000 points, at which time the game will be over and all participants paid out.

5. You may play (and win) as many times as you like. If you're good, you might be able to come away with 5, 10, 15, or even 20 dollars -- or the value of what your retirement accounts lost in 2 seconds in this current market. :lol8:

6. You're only allowed one guess per week, and you may not change it once you've locked in a guess -- in fact, I'm considering locking the thread after 3:00pm on Tuesdays.

Cheer up...our loss may be your gain!

Good luck and game on!!

Anyone have any general predictions on just how low this market will go before a turnaround? I think we'll see it get as low as 4750 before we see a significant turnaround. Bad for short term...great for long term.

I'm guessing we get a bump up first. Don't know when but it could be 1000 pts higher then down to the area you say. Otherwise known as a bear trap. :naughty:

Shoot...I had it going below 5000 before we're done. Many of the companies that announced layoffs a few months ago are only starting to let people go right now. Not to mention others to follow.

I saw a report yesterday that said that 50% of all homes in Nevada are underwater with their mortgages, and it's almost that bad in Michigan, Florida, California and Arizona.

Homes in Detroit are going for less than 20,000 bucks!!!!

This economy is screwed!

Iceaxe
03-06-2009, 08:11 AM
I think a lot of people who are upside down on their mortgages are going to walk pretty soon.... Heck, I know some of the folks who bought houses in my neighborhood two years ago are now 200,000 to 400,000 dollars upside down. It takes a lot of hard work and time to make that kind of coin.... and pretty soon folks are going to figure out they can make that money on paper in one day by walking....

rockgremlin
03-06-2009, 10:16 AM

I agree with you. And that will drive us deeper into this recession because it leaves the banks and lenders holding the bag, to bear the brunt of the unpaid debt.

But wouldn't that incur a serious penalty on the credit rating of the homeowner that walked?

Iceaxe
03-06-2009, 11:27 AM
But wouldn't that incur a serious penalty on the credit rating of the homeowner that walked?

Depends.... someone like me I don't think it would effect much.... I haven't bought anything on credit for over 15 years. Yeah I have a credit card, but there are ways around that, including the type of card that you preload that they issue to people who really shouldn't be allowed to touch a credit card.....

But here is the real deal.... how much is your credit rating worth? Is your credit rating worth well into the 6 figures? which is the numbers I'm seeing in my hood...

I'm no credit expert, but when I can make more in a day by walking then I can make in several years of hard work I'm going to look at the options....

It doesn't change the fact that walking out intentionally is stealing. If you take a loan out you have the obligation to pay it. What is the difference between walking out of a loan for 6 figures rather than going and robbing the bank itself for 6 figures? If you lost your job, then that is a different situation though, but you should still try and pay off your loan.

One solution to the problem that would help avoid this situation is to do away with 30 (or gasp) 40 year loans. If people would buy smaller/more affordable houses with 10 to 15 year loans then it wouldn't matter if the value dropped at times because they would have so much equity built up. Personally I don't get why anyone would tie themselves to a 30 year loan? :ne_nau: I did when I was 19 years old, but I like to think I am wiser than that now. Walking out would have to be a last resort.

Hopefully the people losing their houses will be OK and their families will be safe. Let's all hope the economy will improve.

Oh yes.... the root of this entire mess....

If they held everyone accountable for the money they have borrowed and the deals they made we would not be in this mess.... but we all know that ain't going to happen.... so...back to reality....

I think markets will be mixed this week, but still close higher. I also think that we have probably hit rock bottom, and are starting to slowly creep out of the rut we've been in. I think the recession will end this year, and that the markets will close above 10,000 at this year's end.

We've been living high on the hog for the past decade, and even though these are scary economic times, many Americans find this newfound doctrine called "thrift" to be uncomfortable and annoying. Many more Americans have re-discovered that thing called the savings account, and as saving account balances increase in the next few months, it will bolster consumer confidence, and encourage more consumer spending. This in turn will drive the economy higher, encouraging companies to re-hire, causing unemployment to drop, etc.

And the bull run grinds to a screeching halt...

The stock market is more fickle than a 13 year old girl in love. Last week positive news from Citigroup and GE cause their share prices to plummet more than 10%. ??? Shouldn't negative news been the cause for their shares prices to drop? :ne_nau:

This week: 8116

The Dow was sitting right at my predicted 8116 until 15 minutes before the close, and then it dropped dramatically. :frustrated: Damn profit-takers!

The stall in the rally appears to be giving way. Look for a higher close next week as many companies report 1st quarter earnings. I would say let's hope for positive news, but positive news reported by Citigroup, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America backfired last week, leading to a 20 - 40% decline in financials. So who knows... :ne_nau:

Does anyone else here dabble in the stock market? Geez, at these levels all ya gotta do to make a bucket of cash is buy some stock in solid companies trading at historic lows, and ride it out. Much better than the two bits your crappy bank will give you in interest on the same amount of money in a savings account.

It appears that we're at the bottom of another bull run. Chrysler declares bankruptcy and wall street shrugs it off after 24 hours. Next week look for another modest increase despite what potentially may be bad news from the bank stress tests to be released soon.

Next week: 8372

Erial is last week's winner. I'll get the chart updated pretty soon.

I didn't anticipate such a huge rally last week...in spite of James's doom n' gloom prediction of 6700.

I don't see any end to this current bull run anytime soon...next week: 8699
