Okay here is a quick tutorial for a very simple way to use a proxy server:
This is done in FireFox but Internet Explorer is VERY similar
(Firefox is just tons cooler)

1. Go to IPChicken.com and check your external IP Address

2. Go to http://proxy4free.com/page1.html and pick the IP Address of the country from which you would like your Proxy Server's Address
(You may have to try several until you find one you like without any noticeable speed difference).

3. In Firefox Go Tools \ Options
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj294/DiscGo/ToolsOptions.png

3. Go to Advanced \ Networking \ Connection Settings

4. Select Manual Proxy Configuration and enter the IP Address and the port you chose form proxy4free.com and click ok

5. Now check and see if you have internet again. It could take a couple of seconds to start back up. If you do not have internet, then try a different Proxy Server. If you do have internet go back to IPChicken.com and verify your out facing IP Address.

Now usually you would use a Proxy server to get passed a website which restricts access from a specific country or because of general privacy concerns. There are programs and better yet hardware you can purchase to do a much better job but for the most part this simple proxy server trick will work just fine for most of your proxy needs.

So, I take it nobody will be meeting me under the overpass tonight. I guess I'll stay home.

If you use FireFox than this is a helpful tool that allows for faster switching between turning your proxy on and off.

living in new zealand i have found several sites which won't let me connect. pandora radio is just one of them. i use a program called hotspot shield. apparently it does the proxy thing for you. it gives me the new ip address and i can then open the blocked sites.

This morning I read a news story about a British music service offering free access to a music collection that rivals iTunes. Spotify (http://www.spotify.com/en/). I went to the site to have a look around and find that, due to licensing restrictions the service is not available in the US.
I remembered this handy thread and now, finally have a use for it. Thanks Dan! :2thumbs:

No problem. Anyone downloading torrents, using limewire, etc. would do well to configure your browser and their p2p client to use a proxy server as well.

I download torrents all the time. I have peer guardian but I had heard that proxy use will severely slow torrent downloads...

It completely depends on the server. Find a proxy server that does not slow down your webbrowsing but can still fool IPChicken.com then set that same server up for your downloads.

Even if it were 10% slower the anonymity is well worth it.
