Why Switch to Gmail?
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj294/DiscGo/Computers/99479fe5.jpg
A. Using Gmail grants you access to Google Docs, Google Calendar, Picasa (an Online place to store and share your pictures), Google Bookmarks, iGoogle, and several other Google based programs which are convenient and beneficial for you online experience.
1. Google Doc- a great free alternative to Microsoft Office. It is web based so wherever you go, your documents will be available to you.
2. Google Calendar- a great tool for organizing your personal life, or you can share your calendar with your co-workers (like in Outlook Exchange) to increase efficiency
3. Picasa

I put this together after speaking to my brother last night and finding out that he still uses his hotmail account. I really just can't see a reason for anyone to prefer hotmail or yahoo to gmail and so rather than tear down Yahoo or Hotmail, I wanted to point out why Gmail is so awesome.

i use a mail client to access a variety of email accounts and imap is the only way to go.

I have a gmail account but I don't use it b/c I got so used to Yahoo over the last 11 years. Maybe I should try it more often? I do know I love the calendar and picasa. :2thumbs:

google bookmarks is really a convenience and the spam filtering is SO much better with Gmail than yahoo.
The reason I switched to Gmail from yahoo was I received the exact same piece of spam every day for a month from Yahoo even though I marked it as spam each time. You do that once with Gmail and it goes away.
Yahoo over the last 11 years.
Yep, like the "MY YAHOO"

Ok now this is one beef I do have with Yahoo. I get MORE SPAM in my inbox regardless if I mark it spam or not. Mostly those Nigierian extortion letters, regarding someone needing to wire money, etc....
Discgo....glad you reminded me of this fact. I may have to really start the transition over the gmail starting NOW. :2thumbs:
JP- It's hard for me too b/c I have so much saved and done with my yahoo. I've had the same email address forever.

Good writeup, Discgo.
For me? Gmail is the only web based mail I can get at work. :haha:
No, seriously I've got about 5 gmail accounts, and 6 yahoo accounts. I don't have to spend 30 minutes logging into each of them either, I manage them all with Digsby - www.digsby.com
Google Docs is a major topic I preach about in the schools, because teachers will put homework documents on their blogs, but a lot of students don't have MS Office at home.
Thanks for the summary Dan, I may use this post. :cool2:

Yeah, excellent summary, DiscGo.
I made the full switch about 2 months ago. I've become quite a Google convert, in fact. Calendar, Gmail, Picasa, and all my blogs & feeds at iGoogle. Sweet! One of these days I may even start using Google Docs. Only thing I'm not keen on is Blogger - I way prefer WordPress. As long as they don't go out of business.......

One thing that I really like about Google is how much synergy there is between all of their applications.
You really don't get much spam in Gmail and google in general is just so innovative.

BTW- I still have my yahoo and hotmail accounts. I recommend you keep them. My Yahoo account is the account I now use for junk mail (and one time sign ups) and I use my gmail account for friends, family, and work.

Hey, you know what's cool about Google Calendar? You can set up rules in your current email client to forward your appointments to Google Calendar, then embed the calendar on your website or blog so you don't have to log in to view it. (or you can keep it private) but if you'd like others to quickly know your schedule, you can skip the step of giving them rights and all that junk, and just send them a link to your blog.
I did a little video a while ago on it with Novell GroupWise, but I'm sure it's possible with most clients.

(Sorry, you have to watch a bunch of GroupWise stuff before you see the Google Calendar)

Nice work DiscGo! My favorite thing about gmail is how clean it is (no colorful adverts) compared to other providers. I signed up for it when there was still a waiting list to get an account. But I still use yahoo for all my porn site logins :roflol:

I'm in the same boat with my yahoo account against spam & Nigerian lottery type emails. Was thinking about the switch to gmail.
It's that i just love my yahoo handle name and I can't think of what I'd use for my gmail name.

I do like your new avatar Kev!
I enjoy using Gmail over the others, but I do have a couple of gripes:
Slow! When I'm trying to send full size photos around the globe, it takes a very long time. I get quite sick of looking at "Sending..." and "Still Working..." for a couple of minutes to send something that works so fast on Outlook at work. I know my pc is crap, so I thought that's all it was, but it's slow to send no matter who's pc I've used (work, family, home, friend's, etc).
My other gripe is that I lose messages with some frequency. Often times, I'll forward messages I receive in Gmail to my Outlook at work (because I don't have to wait forever to open attached files...download) and they never show up in the inbox. Also new messages that I compose at home to send to myself at work (pics and such) never make the jump.
I end up using a flash drive instead sometimes and that can be a drag.
Other than those flaws (maybe it's just me), I love the storage and the huge spectrum of stuff at my fingertips if I choose to apply them.
Does anyone else notice the lag involved with sending images? Anyone else ever lose messages?

I have accounts with Yahoo, Gmail, Inbox, and Excite. Each box is used for a different purpose in mind.
I started using Excite way back when Webcrawler was the search engine of choice about 15 years ago but their new email interface is pathetic. It's ridiculously slow and nothing loses more emails. The Excite email is slowly being transferred to the Inbox account which I really like for shopping.
First off. Inbox has a clean interface and it is quicker than Gmail. It often lets you navigate links associated with an online sale ad or the like without leaving the email app. Check a few times through a sale in the reader window and then go back to the inbox without ever using the back button in the browser.
Gmail is nice but thanks to the administrative tools and restrictions here at work I have to clear my cache every month or so to get it working again. It's also a bit on the pokey side. I prefer to use it when I'm organizing friends and potential activity partners into groups. I also like the automatic forwarding that you have to pay extra for at many other sites. I haven't tried Picasa or many of the other tools yet.
Here at work the spam filter used with Outlook has blocked each and every one of the above emails, some of them more than once. It's a headache to go back and find the blocked messages and unjunk them. At that point, it usually quits blocking that address but not always. I went in and manually added them all to the safe list after it repeatedly blocked the gmail account.
I have a Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail account. I almost never use the hotmail account. I use Gmail for a few things and Yahoo has, for years, been my primary use email address. I like MyYahoo for organizing my interests and news, I have favorites and notes there too.
However, I have to pay 30 bucks a year to use Yahoo mail with outlook and it's free with Gmail. Also, I have a blackberry and while I can do email I cannot sync my blackberry calendar or address book with yahoo (they say they are working on it, but I assume it will be part of the paid service too). I can sync with gmail and I love having all my addresses backed up like that.
I havn't even used some of the Gmail features mentioned here. I think I will start using it more...

This is all good stuff but I must admit I'm getting annoyed by computers more and more. Over the last 20 years it's always been a new thing thats better, etc.
And it is usually better. But I've spent so much time with computers that I now want to just go out and play again. I try to keep up but I'm not nearly the geek you guys are anymore. Was once.
OK, now I'm going to go out and work on my buggy. Carry on. :haha:

Okay, not to beat a dead horse but I also just discovered why not to use Yahoo. I have used Yahoo for years for my junk account and I have claimed before that you have a limit to how many spammers you can block in Yahoo and everyone has disagreed with me, but tonight I found the proof. You can only block 500 users in yahoo which is not very many when you consider all the unwanted spam out there.

This is true, and I use both Yahoo and Gmail. Just to play the other side though, the true spammers out there will only use that original senders address once, so even if Yahoo dropped the limit, you'd still be faced with the same problem.
I think that concept would be used better with "actual" email addresses like some magazine you subscribed to or Weekly Gardening Tips or something.
I just wonder if Gmail has a better spam dictionary, like any possible misspelled version of viagra, cheap airline tickets, and pharmacy.
