I call tell you to stay away from geek squad. I don't know what is in the Sandy area but I can tell you that you'd be better off with a small company.

What is your problem? I wonder if I can help.

What is your problem? Yea, I get that a lot. . . . :haha:

Thanks DiscGo. The problem is that the CD ROM died. I bought a new RW DVD drive and installed it, but now windows won't recognize it. I had my friend the Software Engineer take a look at it, but he couldn't figure it out (recognizing that diagnosing hardware problems is not his field of expertise). We swapped out the drive with another one to see if the drive was bad, but no.

Any thoughts?

Did you pull out the cable and see if any pins are bent? I run into that a lot. There is also a master and slave setting with the jumpers on the back. Is it the only device on the ide? Go into bios and change it to be the first boot device and put the windows cd in, does it boot off it? Does the drive even open? Could be power even. Lastly, I'm sure you did, but are you sure that is the current driver?

Did you pull out the cable and see if any pins are bent? Yup

Is it the only device on the ide? Yes

Go into bios and change it to be the first boot device and put the windows cd in, does it boot off it? I'll try that.

Does the drive even open? Yes, I don't think power is the problem

Lastly, I'm sure you did, but are you sure that is the current driver? That's part of my problem. There isn't a new driver available on the web, and without a drive, I can't load it from the supplied disk.

All good advise - thanks!

Gotcha, shucks sorry my help wasn't able to fix your problem. If you do have internet access you should be able to go to the manufacturers website and get the drivers manually. I think that's where skianddive was going with his question. I would still try that before taking her in for repairs. If you have a 2nd machine you can share the cd drive and install that way too.

Good luck!

If you give me the model number of the drive and you have a minute, I can remotely log on your computer and get it going for you.

Yup! I was going to e-mail him the driver and/or set up software, or I was going to post it here so he could download it.
