Hey, so I often go to a family condo that has no internet because nobody lives there.
But we detect wireless all over the place.
So, let's say I'd like to do a study on a WEP Cracker program, and I have a friend who would like to install this on a laptop.
Does anybody have any experience with this, out of the spirit of education?
And is it safe?
"Safe Hacking Software" - an oxymoron?
I mean, sure I can google it. But hackers hack hackers all the time.

Plenty of tools out there (most if not all require Linux) to break WEP.
Be advised that cracking a WAP that's not yours is illegal.

Simply breaking WEP may not do it.
Most people are listing MAC addresses for each of their devices in the router
so even if you have the WEP you can't attach unless you can spoof the MAC.

I use aircrack 2.2 It can crack most WEP's within 10 seconds. It did take up to 60 seconds though once.

For Aircrack to work, you will read that you will need some very specific WiFi cards, and it is unlikely that your friend's laptop will have a compatible network card.
If at first you can't find any public networks, you can also try some of the more powerful and sensitive USB wireless cards/antennas combos. Friends have had good luck with the Alfa models and their omnidirectional antennas, and they are suitable for use with Aircrack.
And if you really need a directional antenna to pick up those distant networks, you can even find directions on the Internet for assembling one out of a tin can!

Yeah, I'm just - I mean my friend is just curious.
Besides, the condo is in a Senior Citizen community, so they probably won't be logging MACs. They've probably just got the default security on there, if they've gotten that far.
I'll tell my friend to check it out, and then I'll tell that same friend to post the results under the username "Sombeech". He doesn't have enough money to join bogley.com right now.

Hehehe! I hear ya bro. In a senior community your probably fine. Just be sure to tell your friend that some people don't take kindly to having their WEP hacked too. I'd be more worried about that. That reminds me, this guy hacked into mine about 6 months ago, oh man...
Wait nevermind... Happy hackin bro
