Apparently, you don't know how Utah manages trophy heards. Every year there is a draw for the few trophy tags in Utah, but the majority of tags bought are what are called spike only. Which insures mostly small bulls get harvested leaving most of the big bulls to breed.
I thought you were a better researcher than that. Infact I've been putting in for a trophy tag for 13 years and have not drawn hopefully this year will be the lucky one.
If you would like to further research Utah's fantastic management tactics, I suggest you look at Utah's division of wildlife resources web page. Did you know that every year dedicated hunters volunteer 80,000+ man hours and this year that number will double to conservation projects for wildlife? Ironic ha!
Was that for Stefan or Lily Huang?

good question ... not sure Lily was interested in writing specifically about utah nor did i post the article to make a comment about utah.
also i heard the move to bogley was, in part, to shed this forum of its apparent utah bias
as we all should know, posting an article and posting a comment are entirely two different things which it seems get confused on forums.

OK... I'm about as pro-gun and pro-hunting and all Utah as you can get.... and I see some merit and truth to what's being said in the article.
just sayin'...

Australia's red kangaroo has become noticeably smaller as poachers target the largest animals for leather.
This is the problem, not hunting. Poachers will exist no matter what hunting bans are in place.
The hunting association actually studies every game population's health, location, and numbers.
Thanks to the hunting associations, many of these animals are in healthy number. They are the ones investigating disease and predators, and coming up with the solution.

heres the deal. generally once an animal has reached true trophy size (not just a legal size. that's different) they may not be part of the reproductive team. these are the animals that have almost reached the end of their life expectancy. often they are within one or two years of dying. the slightly smaller males are stronger and thus beat the trophies out of the opportunity to mate. therefore by culling males who are no longer mating it really doesn't matter if they are taken or not. i would rather take it than see it die slowly by starvation or winterkill.

I was just wondering why this topic about Barack Obama ended up in hunting :lol8:

I agree here. I watched this first hand following the moose in Denali for 8 days this fall, during the rut. The biggest dude out there ended up getting worked, and couldn't keep a harem together. The smaller, more aggressive bulls were more successful.
Though, I understand what the author is saying. There should be a balance, but how do you go about it? Tough call.

Interesting concept. I did hear once the same sort of thing - artificial selection - with rattlesnakes. The noisy ones (those more prone to rattle when someone walks by) get killed off, leaving the quieter, stealthier ones lying in wait to bite the unsuspecting passerby when he/she gets too close.
Just an anecdotal tidbit that I heard, can't quote anything on it.
