Friday
Ski/Snowboard at Brighton in the day 12-9:
Ski/snowboard at Brighton twilight 4-9:
Bohemian Brew (Dinner):
Saturday
Snowshoe Greens Pond 10:00 am:
Tona's for sushi (best dam sushi in the state!):
The above is the itinerary.
So Bogley-ites.....let's get together this Winter in the Utah area to do some mountain play. Possibly one day on the mountain and maybe another day doing some snowshoeing/cross country? I figure for those that don't ski/board that a hike may be nice so we can all mingle, throw snowballs and create yellow snow together-It'd be a great bonding experience. What we need are suggested dates/trails and mountains to play on. Throw your input here!!
I am open for anything after the holidays.
:2thumbs:  You in?

Whewhoo!! Let's do it. Can you guys suggest any trails for back country snowshoeing? I'd love to start looking into some fun hikes. I've never boarded on the mountains in Utah but my husband has. He loves Snowbird and Brighton. Do you guys have any dates that sound good? I can do a three day weekend anytime after the holidays.

I don't know how far down the road we are looking but there are three weekends I can't because the kids will be racing.
Jan 24th race at Park City
Feb 21st race at Snowbird
Feb 28th race at Snowbasin
Any other weekend should be fine.
I know nothing about the resorts in SL area. Although I do have some passes to Brighton this year.
Alison you are the one traveling here so what weekend would be best for you?

The only weekend I can't is the weekend of Jan. 11. I forgot I have a friend coming in town. How about the last weekend in January? January 30th?

Jan 30th sounds perfect
I'm interested.
Actually, this is sort of on subject; Josh, Cody another friend Brad and I are planning to snowshoe into the 5th water hot springs at Diamond Fork canyon on December 31st to spend New Years soaking. We are planning to camp near the hot springs for 4 nights (Dec 31, Jan 1, 2 , 3).
Anyone interested in camping or just a day trip to come hike/snowshoe around the area with us should definitely come up!

Depending on whats going on I would be in.
Its been a hectic past couple of months, and I bought a new place and moved and still painting and cleaning, and only just got my net hooked back up friday afternoon.
Now that i am back, if at all possible, Id be in for doing something, damned near anything after the holidays. Course finding my CC skis, or about any of my other gear may take till then, and some of it may still be in storage, or maybe here in this mess...someplace.

Kapitan, If The Republican doesn't have food. Mac Cool's is an Irish pub with a variety of beer on tap and good food. That could be an alternate.

Where I live, we just have lots of back country trail systems that go on and on for miles and loop around, etc.... We have one locally that has some nice, challenging vertical gain and then we just bushwhack down. It's about a half day hike. Fun stuff! I don't like doing the trails that are designated for snow mobiles though b/c it's stinky and noisy......so possibly check out Nordic/cross country ski trail systems? :ne_nau:
blueeyes
12-11-2008, 09:56 PM
I know there is a cross country trail system at Snowbasin, and I think another one up in the Valley. I will check in with WSU Rec center see what info they can give me. I know they are always organizing snowshoe trips. I keep meaning to go on one, but I never do.

If SLC is the general destination, I would suggest (for snowshoeing):
1. Lake Blanche
2. Red or White Pine
3. Salt Lake Overlook
4. Elbow Fork
All depend on people's general fitness levels and the avalanche conditions at the time. All great snowshoes.
For skiing/boarding, I'd suggest Solitude. No crowds, ever, great places to stop for food, etc.

Treehugger had some great snowshoeing recommends. So I say we look into those trails and firm something up? The date we were looking at is the last weekend of the month, January 30th. Kapitan was going to look into some pubs for us to have some grub and beers after a hard day of Winter playing. Times and exact places are still the kinda-sorta unknown...but all great things start with an idea and I say we are on the right track. :2thumbs: Also, suggestions of what mountain to board/ski on? Do we want to do that too? :2thumbs:
Regarding snowshoes- You can rent them at most outdoor shops, at least you can here in Colorado for about $10 a day. What they do in Utah is ANOTHER story. HAHA!
OR buy a pair- it's a good investment- REI, Sports Authority, etc.... :2thumbs: Or Tree mentioned some for borrowing.  :lol8:

I noticed last weekend coming home from Snowbasin, there was a group of people pulled off at Greens Pond and they were snowshoeing there. Same trail we bike in the summer. So there is skiing and snowshoeing in the same area. As for a bar in Ogden The Wine Cellar is kind of a cool place.. laid back atmosphere, and the couple times I have been in there they have been playing good jazz music.
As for snow shoes... WSU rec center rents them. That is where I plan on getting mine for this shin dig.
And of course if we want sushi after words..... my favorite is on 25th street Tona's.
My only problem right now is I have to work on the 30th in SLC from 5 until I get off about 9:30pm. I am working on it.
Do we want to snowshoe on Fri or Sat? What night do we want to plan dinner for?
abirken
12-29-2008, 07:09 AM
My plans were to come down Friday, leaving early, early am. So I am down to do whatever on Friday as long as it's not TOO early. If it works out better, I may even come down Thursday evening. I'll just see wait and see how this works itself out. Regarding the dinner plans- you guys pick and I'm there. What works best for everyone? Friday or Saturday? Chere....damn that work. Make it go away!! HAHA!! :lol8:

I get off work fairly early on Fridays and could take a half day, easily - we could kick it up the Salt Lake Overlook trail in the afternoon, around 1:30, if you havent gone out already.
The Bohemian Brewery is a nice place to gather - warm and friendly and really good brats and beer. Fort Union and about 700E.
Sunday is a better day to ski/snowboard (less crowded), but I dont know how that would effect the churchgoers in the group...
Grizzly Gulch to the Lake Catherine/Lake Mary overlook into Brighton is a great snowshoe as well (LCC).

There have been so many great suggestions, some I will have to end up going to before the white stuff melts...
How bout a poll to see when and where the majority wants to go?
Like Treehugger, sundays would work better for me.
If you are a churchgoer, read Psalms 19:1. Maybe it will justify skipping out....

The Superbowl is that Sunday.
This trip is certainly starting to come together. From what I have read it sounds like something like this:
Friday: Snowshoeing - Greens Pond up North somewhere. (Prolly an hour/hour fifteen from Salt Lake?) then hanging at The Wine Cellar in Ogden. Or snowshoeing Grizzly Gulch to the Lake Catherine/Lake Mary overlook into Brighton (Salt Lake area) then grabbing some chow in SLC.
Saturday: Skiing/Boarding somewhere in SLC then going to The Bohemian Brewery for dinner and drinks.
Sunday: Whatever people have time for. Some like me will be at Super Bowl parties...
Maybe one day up North and one day in the Salt Lake area???

Then Sat in Ogden area, otherwise I am kinda out both days. I have to have the kids at Snowbasin 8:30am and picked up by 3pm on Sat.
Pretty please with a cherry on top. I promise I won't threaten to knock anyone upside the head for at least a month after.

If we do sushi, we should make it ourselves. I live half a block from the best damn sushi market in SLC, don't have much room for a big party... 10 - 15 people or so. Would have to check with the wife...

Looks like I'm renting snowshoes down there for around $15. Where exactly was it decided we were going or rather, where is GreenPond?
...and dinner? where?
I havent actually reserved the snowshoes yet so if I can get them cheaper than $15 I'd rather do that - Ogden? I need a map or directions.

Alison and I just got through chatting.
Friday is open to whatever the majority would like to do in SLC area.
Did we decide on Night skiing for this get together since some folks have to work?
That night casual get together for some drinks in SL place TBA.
Any suggestions on places to meet up for a casual gathering after potential night ski?
Saturday morning 9AM snowshoe at Greens Pond.
FIRMED UP hike! YAY! But we need to change the time to 10:00 am from a previous suggestion.
Saturday night dinner in SLC TBA.
Sushi? A good brew Pub? The Bohemian?
Is the Bohemian place ok for dinner for everyone on Saturday night?
I think this sounds great unless everyone's hooked on Sushi?
Ok just re-posting what we've come up with. :2thumbs:

Friday night where do you want to meet for drinks?
I skimmed through past posts; this is still planned for Jan 30 and 31 right? I'm not sure about Friday yet (sitter issues) I doubt you want me out sking anyway; I don't know how. :haha:

I might go ski at Brighton on Friday evening, although I've never skied there at night and only once during the day and feared for my life with all the seemingly out of control kids zooming by me all over the place... not my favorite place to ski. Where is the meeting place there? and what time?
I might go to Bohemian, but probably not unless I ski - I know I wont motivate to go out at 10:00 after sitting home and chillin' prior to that.
I pretty sure I wont go snowshoeing, although I'm bummed because I was really looking forward to that with everyone, but I know myself well enough to know that I wont drive all the way up to Snowbasin to snowshoe.
Which means I won't be doing sushi in Ogden either.

3 feet of snow expected in the mountains this week!
We should have some fresh stuff and good weather by Friday-Saturday. :2thumbs:
Outlook
A significant storm system is sending copious amounts of moisture into Northern Utah. Because of the slow movement of this storm, mountain areas above 8,000 feet with see 1 to 3 feet of additional snowfall by Monday. Winter storm warnings are in effect for the Wasatch and Uinta Mountains, the Wasatch Plateau and the Book Cliffs. Rain will continue as showers today, but will increase to periods of rain tonight and Sunday in the valleys. Rain will turn to snow on the Benches late Sunday and it will turn to snow in the valleys Sunday night. Snow will accumulate several inches by Monday morning, so expect a commuter special Monday morning. Snow showers will continue Monday afternoon and Monday night. Another weak storm system will bring a few snow showers on Wednesday and another very weak storm will brush by the area next weekend. Temperatures will be colder, but valley inversions are not expected to produce the unhealthy air quality this week like we had last week. Actually, I'm good with playing cards or risk or charades but would like to plan my liquor purchases in advance if that's the plan... :naughty:
There is a pretty cool jazz bar not far from sushi, there is Brewski's or another club I can't remember the name of in the old hotel. So yeah we can check those out. I have only been to the Wine Cellar (the jazz bar).
Live Jazz? That would be cool...

It is fun to see pictures of everyone. I went up to Layton on Thursday after work to help my brother move (hoping to come with you guys today) but I found out last night that he still needs more help today. So I am sorry I won't get to see you guys this weekend.
P.S. Justin- You are looking great! It is unbelievable how much weight you have lost in the last couple of years. Good for you!

Thx Dan. I'll tell you what, it sure is hard to keep it off during the winter.
By the way,
one of the people in this picture has an internet problem.
