This could go on any of the forum catagories, so I'll post in in General.

After thousand of days spent in the wilderness, last night was the first unplanned bivi I

Glad you are okay and came out none the worse for well. Looking forward to the TR.

Good advice. I have taken some flack from those I canyoneer with sometimes because I carry some extra gear. I have had to use my emergency stuff in a very similar situation and I was very happy I had the extra clothes and emergency bivi. Glad you guys made it out ok.

You forgot to mention what happened when you didn't check in? Or did you still have cell range? I'm just surprised the wife didn't have the national guard out there for ya. :)

With the broken compass however, this was not easy
What! No GPS. If you both had GPS's would it have mad a difference?

Scott P,

Do you carry a SPOT? Best thing I own. Lets you send an I'm OK message even when you are doing the overnight. Keeps the SAR boys from taking risks too.

They are cheap right now, some rebates and such. Well worth the money.
Glad it worked out.

It may have made a difference at the end, but wouldn't have sped up things much until we hit the plateau. Had we had one we likely may have made it out by midnight and it would have been nice.

Do you carry a SPOT?

I'm getting one for Christmas. Same with a GPS. I've always been a map and compass type guy, but I guess a GPS works better in the dark.

Glad you guys are OK. What besides matches and lighters and a bivy bag do you carry in your kit? What kind of bivy? I'm sort of a gear junkie, my wife thinks I hoard. :haha:

What besides matches and lighters and a bivy bag do you carry in your kit?

Standard stuff, first aid kit, water pills, etc. and always extra water. At this time of year we also brought plenty of extra clothing, rope, etc.

What kind of bivy?

Same exact one Redman has posted above.

Anyway, looks like there are special deals on the SPOT. Free activation ($99) and tracking ($49) until December 1.
