I thought there'd be no better place to ask a question about copyrighting images than here in the Dark Room--seems this has come up a bit before.

A lady I work with knew I just got PS, so she asked me if I had the time and the desire if I wouldn't mind making a flyer for her husband's fire fighting class. Yes, it was an assignment given to him but after I finished it, I really thought it looked good and wondered about copyrighting it.

The problem is that for the assignment the entire class was given an image from Wikipedia which was NOT copyrighted:

I'm wondering if, since I manipulated an image that someone else took, would I be able to copyright it? I don't know that I really will go through with it (I don't really have the time or the energy to devote to something like this, but if I ever did...I'm wondering if I could.

Here's the image after I worked with it a bit.

From my understanding you would have to have exclusive rights to the original photo. You can't claim domain over something that is considered free access. Even if you "worked on it".
