Does anyone use them and in what situations? I am considering buying one.

I haven't used one, nor have I heard of them until now. Cool idea, let me know if it works.

They can be helpful, but with a little experience, it's pretty easy to know what the white balance should be in most situations. Or shoot raw.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if it was any better than the different white balance settings that come with the camera or not. I wont complain if I get one as a gift though.

Well, you can manually set white balance to whatever temperature you want with most SLRs. Expodisc just adds an additional step, and additional item to carry. But once you learn the temperatures of different situations, you can dial it in manually. For example:

Halogen - 3000k
Fluoro - 4000k
Daylight - 5600k
Cloudy - 6000-6800k
Shade - 6500-7500k

And of course, depending on how you want the image to look, you can dial it in anywhere in between. Expodiscs are typically used by people who are worried about making skin tones look accurate.
