The Lower Black Box topic caught my eye. Has anyone hiked the LBB near the current level of 103 cfs?

Can't say how doable it is, as I haven't done it yet. Just be careful. I remember two trips in 1999, where folks were killed within a month of each other because they entered at too high of a flow rate. Recommended flow is 30cfs...

8/1999 - Sterling Cooper(38) and son Brandon (12) enter Black Box - too swift, tried to climb out. Father falls to his death. 30cfs recommended, entered at 264cfs.

7/1999 - California man entered black box and got trapped by a log jam. 30cfs rec, entered at 250cfs.

100cfs might be enough to overcome if you are strong; but again, not knowing the canyon; I'm certainly not condoning it...

Be safe,
A.J.

Hi A.J. We went this last weekend and did it at 109 cfs, also rapped into UBB next day and descended from the rockfall. What a blast! I wouldn't do it at anything lower now! Way more fun if you like water. Did have to scout a few spots and pick safest way through but it was no problem. I'd hesitate to do it at any higher level however and of course it could have been more difficult if there had been any significant log jams to deal with. Bette in SLC.

Nice!

Glad you had a good time, and most importantly, stayed safe. Will file the cfs info for future reference...

Take care,
A.J.
