Or non-athletic get togethers in general - we're planning a Sushi-fest next. Concerts are great fun but not the best place to talk.

So Kapitan when are we going to plan the Sushi-fest? Mmmm Sushi and Saki!

I don't know the Sushi places in SL very well, I have eaten at Ichiban Sushi and it was ok. I did like the atmosphere. The other place I ate was down by Market Street grill, I don't recall the name. Ok too.

I know Tona's in Ogden is the bomb when it comes to sushi!

Who is intereseted in joining the Sushi-fest? What night is best?

October 23 would work for me. :five:

Yeah, I know it's a long way off, but that's about when I'll be passing through...

Mmmmm, sushi....... Pardon my pomposity, but Vancouver has some amazing sushi. It's everywhere here (a search of "Vancouver BC sushi" on Google Maps comes up with over 1600 hits!), and of incredible quality. Something to do with ethnic diversity and being on the ocean? Mmmmmm.....

October 23rd will probably the second annual Bogley sushi fest, heh. I think we can do it on the 23rd of October also but us locals should probably meet sooner. I'm good pretty much any night. Come on folks, step up, lets hear your ideas and dates you're available.

The best nights for me are either Wed or Sat. Friday would be ok, but I usually don't get off work until 9PM.

How about Oct 1st or the 4th right after pay day.

And Oct 23rd for the second time, I will make it work.

KapitanSparrow
09-14-2008, 09:25 AM
I'm fine with either 1st or 4th. Who else is willing to meet with us? I know we have a bunch of sushi lovers here! What's your favorite roll and sake Blueeyes? I like the traditional salmon/avocado and spicy tuna. No preference for sake, but cold sake rocks.

blueeyes
09-14-2008, 01:06 PM
I like my sake warm.

As for the rolls, I like them spicey. My favorite is the Green Globe, crab and raw fish (i don't remember what fish they use) in a ball with thin slices of avocado all around it. YUMMMY. It is truly and orgasim in your mouth. I have a staunch LDS friend who loves sushi as much as me and she whole heartedly agrees with my description of the Green Globe. My second favorite is called a Volcano, spicey agian, eel and yummy spicey sauces.

I just like sushi!

Ok so Oct 1st. If the rest of Bogley doesn't want to join, I will ask Meet In they have a bunch of sushi lovers on that forum too. Only thing is it will have to be in SL cuz they won't travel to Ogden. TOO FAR they say.

Where do you like to get sushi? I want to try a new place that I haven't been to yet.

I guess you must Alison.

As far as a place, I've been to a couple but have no favorites. I think I have one bookmarked at work so I'll check its name tomorrow. But I'm fine with any place you wanna try out.

blueeyes
09-14-2008, 07:57 PM
Alison, that would be awesome!

Ok so I asked if anyone on Meet In would be interested in going and what they suggest.

Guess we could do a monthly sushi-fest and try a new place each month.

So place is TBA on OCT 1st at 6:30 PM.

Ahhh disss! If only I lived closer to you guys. Hot Saki is the bomb! I've never had Green Globe, sounds yummy. I dig caterpillar rolls which have octopus and eels too, probably pretty close. If you guys ever come to STG lemme know. We only have two sushi bars in town but they are both decent.

:2thumbs:

Or Vegas... I'm there 2x a week and can make arrangements.

At such pace we should be good for a couple of years. Then we will have to venture out to faraway places like St. George or Colorado in search of new Sushi joints. Caterpillar roll looks very good. But for me anything with avocado looks good :2thumbs:

I went to a new sushi place called Simply Sushi in West Jordan the other day. It was on Redwood Rd and 7200 South. It is on the south end of the strip mall on the east side of the road. They had a great deal on all you can eat sushi and it was REALLY good. You'll have to check it out KapitanSparrow and give us a report.

Thanks, Acca. I've been trying to find that place for weeks. (not searching too hard though. )

I'm up for some sushi. I'll try almost anything but my fiancee is strict in her veggie rolls. :ne_nau: That's ok... More fish for me. :2thumbs: I don't know about the Oct 1st/4th, but the 23rd is on for me.

So far the suggestions are

Mikado's - pricey and I think they are associated with Ichiban so not my choice

Takashi - recommended by someone who's opinion i trust

Cirle Lounge - guess they have awesome jazz

Simply Sushi - sounds like good value

The date is for sure OCT 1st and of course we will go again OCT 23rd.

So which place do you want to try???

KapitanSparrow
09-16-2008, 06:40 AM
I say let's go with Takashi which sounds really interesting. I could not find a menu for them, the site listed is some artsy thing. I might try out the Simply Sushi place before Oct. 1 and will let everyone know how it is like.
What do others think?

mmmmm... sushi. Takashi is good, better than Ichiban for sure in my opinion. I like the Magic Dragon (eel roll), the Carribean (spicy mixed with sweet Mango... yumm) and don't miss the Summit Roll, one of the best rolls in Utah (listed under Nigiri rolls on the menu, separate from the regular rolls). Wish I could go but I'll be down south doing canyons.

I have never had sushi before, but why not try it out among a bunch of Bogleyites?

I will have to keep an eye on this so I know when and where to show up.

If it is end of the week, though, I have to be at work at 6pm. For myself, Ogden would be better. If I take the night off, I may have to try sake.

KapitanSparrow
09-17-2008, 01:15 PM

Now if you were talking the 23rd of September, I'd be there.

Ahh Sushi has half price rolls everyday for lunch and on Wednesdays too. I quite like it. It's a private club, but memberships are cheap. Right downtown, on 1st south between Main & State, almost directly under the Deseret News building. I think Wednesdays are $4.00 schooners too.

If you're ever in Spokane, WA, stop by Sushi.com downtown. They do it right. I don't think they own the domain name though. :ne_nau:

Have fun y'all.

The following folks expressed their desire to attend:

Let's confirm everything for the last time a week before the day and make a reservation then. Meanwhile, all are welcome to join us!

Mmmm guess where I went tonight up here in Jackson. You got it I had sushi at Nikai.

Kapitan, I had cold sake that was fantastic, so smooth and warmed the soul! I got to try three different sake's and I couldn't make up my mind which was the best.

I am a happy camper tonight!

I remember, as far as cold sake was concerned, there used to be regular "milky" sake, "sparkling" sake sort of like champagne, and "crystal clear", the most refined sake out there. Ahhhh, f-this, I'm going to Simply Sushi tomorrow, although they probably don't serve Sake, heh.

KapitanSparrow

Found a little review of the Simply Sushi joint. It's not straight to the point but eventually does give you an idea what to expect, heh:

I came back to West Jordan this weekend to pick Scott up and while I was here we decided that since he had worked so hard all week, we would treat ourselves to dinner. Scott had his heart set on sushi and had bragging to his co-workers all day that that was what he was having for dinner. He told me that he didn't want to be a liar and so he said that he would like it if that's what we did. I have to admit, that's what I wanted for dinner. When I was here last weekend, I went with my mom to Smith's in WJ and they have added a new strip mall next to the grocery store. I noticed that they put in a place called Simply Sushi: All you can eat sushi. So I told Scott about it, and we decided we wanted to try it. We've tried many places around the valley and have had some great sushi. When we went to this place, we walked in and the people running it looked Polynesian. Scott mumbled "Just what I was afraid of." You see, most of the time the really good sushi is made by Asian people. It's not that we have anything against Polynesians, we really love them, we were just worried about the quality of the sushi. The only place to sit was at the sushi bar, so we sat next to a cute little family. We decided to go with the all you can eat, which gives you an hour to eat all that you can. We ordered some sushi and it was heaven! We were so impressed with the sushi and with the service. I don't think I've ever eaten at a place with such friendly service. We were so pleasantly surprised! We left full and knowing that it was a good thing that we moved to Price, we would be regulars in that place. So if you like sushi (which we understand that most don't) we fully recommend this place. It was a great experience.

Yeah, I hear ya. Now I wonder if it's an hour with waiting time while they prepare it and bring it to you or is there a buffet, heh. I was planning to go there this evening but I have a friend visiting so it got postponed until tomorrow afternoon.

KapitanSparrow

I stopped by Simply Sushi today for lunch and I am happy to report that it is a decent little place. It is also surprisingly inexpensive as far as Sushi is concerned.
The all you can eat deal is $14.95 until 3 p.m. (lunch) and you can choose from a dozen of different Sushi Nigri options or hand and long rolls. It's $19.95 after 3 p.m. (dinner) but your all you can eat option is expanded by "deluxe dinner long rolls" including the Caterpillar Roll :-)
The all you can eat deal is actually for 1 hour only but I promise you can stuff yourself very nicely in that time. I went traditional with spicy tuna/avocado, salmon/avocado and San Francisco rolls, and salmon and upside down shrimp nigri.
On the down side, after opening in June they're still waiting for their liquor license so no Sake or imported beers :frustrated: Apparently it is very hard to get a liquor license in Utah :roflol: The girl I spoke to said they hope to have one by the end of the year, heh.

I will leave it up to Blueeyes to mobilize the crowds but I figured I'll just mention the next Sushi-Fest gathering on October 23, time t.b.d. Venue is either Takashi (I guess it depends on how many of us will attend) or Simply Sushi (which doesn't have it's liquor license yet :ne_nau: ) Planning to attend so far are Blueeyes, Cirrus2000, Gutpiler_Utahn, myself. Everyone else is welcome to attend.

PS: How about a beer/liquor fest where we can have fun and drink to our heart's desire, not worry about getting home?

Oooh Kapitan, I like the way you think. Let me talk with Laurie and Greg they have an awesome place up in Park City. I will let ya know if they are game.

Sushi-fest 2 will be Oct 23rd. Greyhair says he will be down here for his last appointment so he can make it too.

If we go to Takashi's I will have to limmit the number of people in attendance to 10 and we have to be seated by 5:30 PM. So let me know how you all feel about this.

If we go to Simply Sushi then no Sake (that is sad cuz I love that stuff) but I can go with out.
