Heh, two years of hype in the making and the game is a bust. That's funny.

No no there has got to be some mistake. Just looking at the youtube gameplay videos has gotten me excited for 2 years...
Say it ain't soo!!!!
Ok after reading the reviews, they arent reviews. it's a customer protest about DRM. Really bad move for EA. I understand their motivations since you interact with other peoples planets when you become a god. But really bad implementation. They should have just made an authentication account linked to the registration values. Hackers figured out how to bypass it 2 weeks before the game even came out. LAME! looks like i will be downloading it instead of buying it also. I had to many problems with BLACK/WHITE to try that again.
First of all, the game incorporates a draconian DRM system that requires you to activate over the internet, and limits you to a grand total of 3 activations. If you reach that limit, then you'll have to call EA in order to add one extra activation. That's not as simple as it sounds, since when you reach that point EA will assume that you, the paying customer, are a filthy pirating thief. You will need to provide proof of purchase, reasons why the limit was reached, etc, etc (it has all happened before with another recent EA product, Mass Effect). EA, of course, is not obligated to grant you that extra activation or even provide that service. In a couple of years they might very well even shut down the general activation servers, because "it's not financially feasible" to keep them running. What you will be left with is a nice, colorful $50 coaster. And you will be required to pay for another copy/license if you want to continue playing.
This basically means that you are actually RENTING the game, instead of owning it. The game WILL stop to function in the future. That's inevitable, because even if EA keeps the activation servers going, there IS going to be a time when EA will simply cease to exist because of financial issues or federal laws (like most business eventually do).

this is why... from the wiki of spore
i've been waiting for this game for years and i plan on playing it soon.
Digital rights management
Spore uses a modified version of digital rights management (DRM) software SecuROM as copy prevention, which requires authentication upon installation and when online access is used. This system was announced after the originally planned system met opposition from the public, as it would have required authentication every ten days.[51] Additionally, installation of a copy of the game will only be authenticated up to three times. EA Customer Support, however, states that EA can be contacted by the user and, on a case-by-case criteria, have their activation count for Spore reset when the activation limit is depleted.[52]
As a result of the protection scheme, a protest was staged using amazon.com's rating system to give the game 1 star.[53][54]

Kinda cool way to protest actually. Hit them in the pocketbook ya? I always thought that holding up signs was a bit outdated.
Cool wiki link BTW, lots of good info on there.

I was into games up until a few years back but today I could care less about spores. The only game I'll play is the 2009 EA Sports Football Manager (that's soccer for you Jankees). Can't wait. :2thumbs:

Spore not spores, hehe. I'm not sure if I'm losing interest or just to friggin busy.
This game you make a single celled animal and then evolve it. Then pretty soon you grow legs and hit land. Then you form communities and battle or exist peacefully with other communities. Eventually you evolve into a god and can go visit other peoples worlds that they made. They link with everyone else playing the game. You Can then grab one of their species and bring it back to your planet and have it interact with your species. I just think it will be fascinating to control a species evolution and habits. The amount of customizing is insane.
The only problem I guess is that people are making their creatures looking impressively like humans with huge...ahhh reproductive units? And I guess people are getting offended.
