Abby and I saw a strike that close on I-35 north of Dallas-Fort-Worth once. The amazing thing about super-close strikes is that you can hear and see that they are actually a rapid series of strikes in the same spot - a little like a machine gun.

On time while mountain biking in Brian Head in August we got caught in a lightning storm. There was two lighting strikes that we less than 100 yards from us. After the first one we all jumped off our bikes and cowered on the embankment on the side of the dirt road. I was talking to my friend and the second strike hit a tree across the gully about 40-50 yards it hit right in my line of sight and left the top off the tree glowing orange and smoking.

There was lightning going off everywhere these were just the two closest. I used to never be more than a little afraid of lightning until that trip. Now if I am out in it, it scares the hell out of me.
