Does anyone know what kind of "rock" this is... Its actually very clear and bigger than a softball. There has to be someone here who knows "rocks" I know it is not the best picture but its the best i could do at the time

It looks like ulexite bound to some other type of rock.
Is it translucent at all? And/or brittle?

Looks like a chunk of quartz

I think it looks too fibrous to be quartz...

quartz has no cleavage. that definately does have cleavage, just not the cool kind. although ulexite is generally more fibrous, i still think it is a good assumption. with out seeing it in hand sample though... it may just be a big chunk of gypsum.

I'm gonna go with quartz also. But am not a rock expert by any means.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milk_quartz

Milk quartz or milky quartz may be the most common variety of crystalline quartz and can be found almost anywhere. The white colour may be caused by minute fluid inclusions of gas and/or liquid trapped during the crystal formation. The cloudiness caused by the inclusions effectively bars its use in most optical and quality gemstone applications

I'm pretty sure it's not quartz. Research time!

That's my guess as well. I've got a couple of huge chunks of gypsum that look just like that one.

Did you find that in the Swell. It's everywhere out there.

A fine specimen of Northern Leaverite...

Leave er' rite where you found it that is. Sorry, bad joke a geology freind of says that ever time he gets asked a rock question. Funny some walk off saying "a leaverite huh, cool... I'll hang on to it". :haha:

It is translucent and on the back side it has a green hue I cannot chip or scratch it with my finger nail...

Well, now it sounds like youve found kryptonite.

my first guess without handling it and ph testing would also be gypsum. trona is much more crystalline. this looks like it would flake off in sheets. i've seen similar deposits up here in SW WY but you'd have to do some testing to be absolutely sure. :ne_nau:

My vote was for Gypsum until you said that you cannot scratch it with a fingernail. Gypsum is easily scratched with a fingernail.

My next guess would be possibly calcite. Quartz has a different "look" to it than the rock in your photo.

See if you can scratch it with a nail. If it scratches easily in one direction with a nail, it's likely calcite.

Where did you find it?
