I have hiked Neff's a ton and usually find rattle snakes. The snakes stay off the trial and prefer to be in the bushes to stay cool. The snake will rattle to let you know of its presence. I usually do what you do and hike on the other side of the trail. Even though I hate snakes I see that snakes hate me more. Do this and you will be fine.

I wouldn't bet on that.... I estimate that I come across at least a dozen rattlesnakes each year and I bet less then 10% ever rattle.

And the two or three times I've actually had a rattlesnake strike at me I got ZERO percent warning.

I have one friend who was actually struck by a rattlesnake while hiking with me (snake got his boot). That snake also failed to rattle. That snake struck when my friend stepped over a log in the trail and the snake was behind the log and surprised (or maybe felt trapped).

On a local hike recently, I came across this guy. He was the biggest snake I'd seen outside of a petstore or zoo. Scared me to death but he was harmless?? :ne_nau: :nod:

Yep--came upon a rattlesnake yesterday in Benson Cr.--No rattle.

I do hope to God that they don't chase after hikers. Do they usually go for the boot or calf?

They go after whatever they can get.

It is illegal to kill them in Utah BTW.

It's just like with bald eagles; when cornered you can protect your life. Of course, when was the last time you heard of an eagle chasing and cornering a person? :roflol:

If the snake has a knife you can defend yourself.
Otherwise just walk away.

That pic seriously gave me the willies when I saw it, I hate snakes and hate to see them on my bike, I am knows to shreik like a women when I come close to one.
