OK, so I wanted to wait to hear from Wade...
Greyhair biker took a nasty spill on the ride last night.
This was the ride: http://www.bogley.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12668
Compound fracture in his left arm, both bones snapped. Apparently there is a piece of bone still on the trail somewhere... And on his right elbow there was a NASTY gash.
He went over the handlebars in a freak accident. Luckily it was near the paved road, so it was easy for the rescue.
you may consider some of these to be somewhat bloody photos
I know some of you are expecting missing limbs and eyeballs, but this is still pretty bad considering it's a friend.

That's tough stuff Greyhair. From my armchair all I can see is blood. Ain't no tears there. I bet you're back on the bike in 6 to 8 weeks, just in time for prime Moab and St. George season. The elbow looks beautiful too. As far as I'm concerned, it's far worse worrying about whether you might wreck than it is when you actually do.
If it makes you feel better, I fractured an arm a year ago last March. I was back on the roadie in 3 weeks and the mountain bike in 6 weeks. A speedy recovery to you.

Seriously, Wade, that just really, really sucks. Get better soon. I hope they gave you some really good drugs so maybe you won't feel anything for a few days.
Those are some awesome nasty pics. When is the video coming? I am looking forward to that. I'll post some of mine in a little while. Poor Wade. Although, he is going to be a little more famous. Rock star!!!

Aw, geeze! Poor Wade :eek2: - what a trooper, though! No tears or even what looked like a serious grimace of the major pain he must have been in. Now, tho - he gets some pain meds :2thumbs: . And has some fun scars to tell the story of around a campfire.
I'm sure he was thrilled that his friends were there with the camera (and more importantly, the cell phones!) to capture his injury for all to see here on bogley - but then, what are friends for? :lol8:

NICE!
Got a friend who broke his arm a few years back, all the bones straight across his wrist. Keep in mind he did it punching, not a person, but a car. an old car at that when they were not made out of beer cans. dented the door, left knuckle prints in it. He was so proud he has his xrays framed.
I think you should maybe frame yours, and ad a collage of the pics on here to them and put them up in the front room of your home, or maybe as invites to future bogley bike rides.

http://www.bogley.com/forum/files/img_8395__medium_.jpg
Pain management doctors tell you to stay ahead of the pain, meaning that you should take your pain meds as often as prescribed, or at the first indication of pain (as in the case of migraines, for example.) Don't be shy about taking your meds - when they are medically necessary there is low potential for addiction.
Sheesh - I sound like a Celebrex commercial. Anyway, it's all true.

Yikes! My 17 year old broke her wrist in a rollar blading accident last year...kinda looked like that with the bone snapped. The doctor had to install a fairly big (I thought) metal t-plate. She'll never have full motion with it like the other one, but it healed pretty quickly.

that is by far the most difficult thing for me to do...this is the equivalent to nailing my foot to the floor. all day i'd go do something...very slowly mind you, and then go lay down in the chaise for an hour or so and recover. it actually worked pretty good. i only waited on four customers all day...so i 'rested' :ne_nau:

Yeah - definitely don't want to overdo it on the tylenol-containing products! A functioning liver is needed if you want to get back out on those trails after the arm heals.
Another thing to maybe ask your doc: alternating an NSAID (like Aleve, Motrin, Celebrex, etc.) w/ your tylenol narcotic med. I used to have my post-op patients do this and it's a great way to keep from taking too much of either type of medication, 'cos having a chewed-up stomach is also no fun for anyone! Tylenol is not an NSAID, so it doesn't control inflammation, which is what is causing much of your pain anyway. So, throwing an NSAID in there prolongs the pain relief in all directions - yay :2thumbs:
NSAID - non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug...just in case everyone didn't already know that. Now youse do!
Tanya - don't want to hijack Wade's thread, but what are you needing pain meds for? Did I miss a report of an injury? Kripes, peeps - be careful!

and i was od'ing on tylenol without knowing it
We had a similar situation with Abby. When her arthritis gets really bad, she needs more than a Darvocet, so our doctor said to take two. I did the math, and two Darvocet contains 1300mg of acetaminophen, which is a third of the entire amount a healthy person should have in a 24-hour period. It concerned me that that much acetaminophen might be hepatoxic, so we got our doctor to write her a prescription for something as strong but with just 325mg of acetaminophen.

Oh man...those are some bad ass pics of a bad ass break. I would not wish that on anyone. Hope your recovery is going well.
Love the Batman splint.
Hang tough. And seriously...be careful with the pain meds. They can be ball grabbers.
And Tanya...the deviated septum thing is fun huh. I had mine worked on a few years back when I broke my nose, again. The doc says "While I was in there I figure I'd help you breath easier". It did help though. I hope it works for you too.

50 stitches, metal plates, screws. That was some accident you had. But I'm guessing being around hot nurses takes away the pain ;-)

Just an update y'all. It's been (10) Ten weeks since the accident and yesterday my doc at the U of U told me to take my brace off.(yeah!) Bone is healing well...still got a bit to go, but he wanted me to start weight training with it SO, I have about 6 weeks left before anyone will let me go back to work  Therapy kinda sucks but what can I expect? I can only lift up to 10# and nothing over my head but things are cool all around.

yes, the light is there! I just need to get strenght back...and the bulk in the arm again  it's a bit atrophied :ne_nau: ....at least I have an arm. Thank goodness for modern medicine!
The strength will eventually come back. The scar always has a different feel to it when something brushes up against it :lol8:

most definitely a wierd feeling! The inside scar I feel the most...skin's more sensitive. I can feel one of the plates now too...that is kinda cool, or will be until I run it up onto something hard...ouch.
