View Full Version : Trailhead Break-in @ Rainbow Gardens

I can never again say "it will never happen to me." I got my wallet stolen out of my car at the Rainbow Gardens TH last night while I was riding the shoreline trail. I can almost guarantee that they were watching me before I left since the wallet was the only thing stolen. What's worse (I hope) is that they broke out the glass of my left rear door to get the wallet. That mess is going to cost me $100 for the deductable, not to mention the $18 it cost me for a new driver's license and the Golden Eagle Pass that expires in August. The center console, under the seat, or in the glove box aren't safe. Take that thing with you.
If anybody saw anything please let me know. If you see people hanging around trailheads that don't look like trail users take down their license plates and make sure they know they're being watched.
Were there other hikers hanging around the lot or just a car or two?
What time was it? We were there at around 4:30-4:45pm, saw a skank "service" a guy in the parking lot, but other than that no one else was there

dude, that sucks BAD.
I actually left my keys in my truck, unlocked, right there at Rainbow Gardens about a month ago.
I had just climbed up the hill and realized it. I debated going back down, but I REALLY hate climbing and didn't want to do it again. I took the gamble, and won.
Good luck man. I wonder if there are any kind of security cameras there.

Thanks for the well wishes. I talked to a couple of the waitresses at The Greenery. They said lots of stuff gets stolen, but they didn't say anything about security cameras. I wouldn't feel so bad if they hadn't gotten my ID. Luckily I have a passport so I was able to replace my drivers license.
I left for my ride about 7:30PM and when I called to cancel my credit card at 8:45 there had already been a charge on the card. It was only for $10 in gas, so one of the guys I work with thinks the thief was on a motorcycle :ne_nau: What's surprising is that the gas stations in the area don't have cameras on their pumps. I think this character will get caught. He broke in during broad daylight and immediately used the card. He (or she) seems just arrogant enough to get carless and get caught.
I'm 99% convinced that I was being cased by the thief. They only touched the one spot where my wallet was. If they had looked in any other usual spots I wouldn't have my CD cases either.
What really sucks is that there would've been plenty of witnesses right when I left. There was a group of about five ladies standing at the end of the trail chatting. I can promise that nobody would've done a smash and grab with them standing there.
The ride was awesome BTW. I felt my riding finally come together. My mood took a full 180 when I saw the busted glass next to my car. I guess on a scale of things I got off pretty cheap. It seems that every time I ride Porcupine Rim in Moab I end up throwing at least $100 at my bike, but the average is closer to $200. I'm only into this about $160 so far. This has been an expensive lesson. My real concern at this point is that my identity will be stolen.

Sorry to hear it. Happened to me once, so I know the frustration you must feel. In my case, not only my wallet was taken, but my SIL's purse with keys to two houses and three cars. They were up all night getting locks changed.
