We were in Hanksville for two nites and hiked in to Horseshoe Canyon on Friday. We got really lucky and temps were on the cool side, pretty cloudy most of the hike. As Alison said, that would not be fun on hot, sunny day!

The pictographs are terrific. We love to go to sites like these but have never seen anything like this. I just can't comprehend people living here 3000 years ago and doing this amazing artwork.

Tanya, Horseshoe Canyon is actually a part of Canyonlands N.P., you would head out toward the Maze District and instead go to this canyon. I didn't know that Shane has is on Climb-Utah until we got back:

Great shots, Win. I've wanted to do that hike for a long time, but haven't. Maybe next time.

Great hike isn't it? We finally made it in on our last trip
in September. Rain kept us away twice before and we
we had to exit quickly this time due to approaching
thunderstorms. The canyon had flash flooded late the
afternoon before and it looked like it was going to again.

It cut down on the time we could spend with the pictographs
but, better safe that sorry. You can read an account of
our hike starting halfway down this page:

I was impressed by the variety of pigments used and the incised
patterns were something I didn't expect as well. Here's a shot of
a pair I call "Laurel and Hardy". I guess "Martin & Lewis" works as
well...one goofy figure and a "straight man". Quite a team!

BTW, Shane's description of the hike mentioned above
was with us in a printed form on this hike for reference
and I left it for others in the box at the trailhead along
with the topo we had...thanks Shane...great resource!

I made that hike in the spring of 2006. Nice, easy hike, definitely worth the time...

Nice shots, Win! I love that spot. A nice 1/2 day hike, and the pictographs are truly stunning. The Great Gallery is utterly awe inspiring! Thanks for sharing the pics!
