I say screw big city "living"! According to this I would have spent 10 years of my life on commute alone if I continued to live in NY. It now takes me about 20 minutes a day instead of 2 hours ;-) which means 1.4h of afternoon nap time :2thumbs:

Workers spend an average five years getting to and from work, over the course of their working life.
It's a statistic that has triggered alarm bells for Work Wise UK, the smarter working organisation that is working in conjunction with the Automobile Association (AA) in a new campaign to cut the commute.
According to its findings, the average commuter spends almost 29 working days each year travelling to work, or five years over a working life, a figure that equates to 54 minutes per day.
For many London commuters, who travel more than three hours per day, the figure is a staggering 96 working days each year, or 18 years during a career.
Sadly it's a time-waster that costs dear. Fuel bills have climbed 16% since last year, and with 18 million people commuting by car, that is a total additional cost of nearly

urban sprawl can produce the same effect. the wasatch front is already heading there in a big way (and the wasatch front could hardly be considered big city living compared with the likes of new york or other major US cities).

living close to work is the only solution to the problem with a long commute.

Jetpacks and Teleporters are the solution to the worlds problems. No more polluting gas guzzlers, no more wait time. The oil companies should invest some of their billions on Teleporter technology. Until then I will keep complaining about my 30 min commute.

I agree. Unfortunately some people would prefer a long drive. I remember when I was an intern out at Kennecott, I was working with an engineer who lived in PARK CITY! I asked him why he lived in Park City when there was an entire valley full of perfectly good houses that weren't so far from work. His Reply (direct quote): "What am I gonna do...live RIGHT NEXT TO THE MINE?!"

Park City to Kennecott is roughly 100 miles round trip. That's just Krazy!

The commute is part of our life style. We leave the house at 6:15 am to get to work on time at 8am. Off at 5pm and get home before 6:30-7pm. We carpool together (actually he drops me off and picks me up as he is retired) Car time is together time. I like where I live and on the weekends when we are home, it's like being away for the weekend. The rest of the time, we are travelling anyways. Any drive less that 6 hours is no bid deal to us. Leave for Zion on Saturday morning and back home Sunday night. It's either that, or we don't go. Vegas is only 3 hours away.....hell it has taken me longer to get to work on a bad freeway day!

ps: I love my iPhone to keep the conversation entertaining. :2thumbs:

Wasted time? NOT! I shave, read my morning paper, post here and on the internet, text all my friends, draw on my sketchpad, plan my next hike, clean my fingernails, relace my shoes, etc. Infact with all the things I got going on I barely even have time to drive. Maybe that's why I get flipped off so often?
