I Know a lot of you watch your weight and try to stay healthy so this is now the Official Weight Loss Thread.
This is where you can go to brag, ask questions, seek support.....
Here is my story.... The first week in February I weighted 203#, but my preferred weight is 185#. At 185 my speed really increases, yet I'm still big enough to dish out some real punishment in a good old fashion bar fight. :boxing:
As of today I'm at 188#, that is a loss of 15 pounds in 3 1/2 months. I'm pretty proud of that. I hope to be at 185# by the end of the month.
I did it by exercising (walking one hour most nights of the week) and eating smaller portions at meals. I didn't even have to cut out beer.

May '07 I was 231. By October I was around 192, from the Atkins Diet. Had the goal of 190.
December, had knee surgery, christmas, new years, valentines day, easter.... gained about 10 lbs.
Started up the diet again 3 weeks ago, getting around 197, still aiming for 190.

December of 07 - just shy of the 300 lb mark, between 295 and 298. Tried snowboarding for the first time and hated it, couldnt even reach down to do up my bindings with out help...
As of May 1, I am between 247 and 250... snowboardin was MUCH easier and more fun, canyoneering is easier, as well as tying my own damn shoes, basically doing everything is easier and more enjoyable. Come to think of it, I havent found any downside to losing 40+ pounds of fat...
Still want to drop another 20-30. Doing it the old fashion way. Lifting weights 3 times a week, cardio 5 times a week and lots of protein, low carbs and low fat....

How many different sizes of clothes did you go through? :ne_nau:
I had to garbage all my pants because they were much to big in the waist. And I did tossed them instead of saving them so if I got heavy again I would have to buy more clothes. I didn't want to be tempted to fit into my fat cloths again.

I Started in Febuary weighing 274 and just last week I weighed in @ 249 I have a goal weight of 220-230. Seems high im sure but as and FYI in high school (11 years ago, best shape of my life Blah blah blah) i had to suck weight in order to wrestle @ 215.
I have done this by working out as often as i can, 3-4 times a week and cutting back on portions and nearly zero junk food. I have bad days but i am looking at this as a life change so one bad day is no big deal.
Good luck

low carbs and low fat....
I've found it's hard to watch carbs AND fat. They usually substitute one another. I'd just watch the carbs if I were you, it will be more effective, and the food is better too. :2thumbs:
People will say it's healthier to watch your fat, but carbs turn to fat when they're not burned, sitting at your desk....

I know this was not directed to me but... i currently need new cloths but am holding off until i drop another 15-20 lbs... I only want to have to buy once...
February of 2008 I was 201 lbs, now I am 178, that's 23 lbs loss from Boot Camp and eating more healthy now.
Before I just ate junk food and always had seconds at dinner. Now I try to eat more green/fruit and less preservatives. I feel 100% better! :2thumbs:
My goal is 175 lbs steady.

I dunno how much I weigh these days, but I don't gauge my overall fitness on weight. Rather, I gauge it on overall look and feel. I have always been about 2 packs shy of a six pack, and when those four start to get less and less visible, it's time to get serious about diet/exercise.
So far I'm over weeks straight without sugar, and it's helped out a lot. I feel a lot better, and exercise yields results much quicker. Less flabby around the mid-section lately. :2thumbs:
Ya'll know my story, little CHF does wonders :haha:
I'm 80lbs down from the time I entered the hospital to now. I'm now on a low-salt diet. If you're a salt-a-holic, this isn't for you  But, go ahead and try :haha: I've cut just about all sugar from my food intake years ago and really don't miss it. The occasional ice cream every few months doesn't set me back onto a sugar rush thing. So, I'm good with that. As of now, I cannot do any cardio...but, do walk probably more than they want me to.
Grant it, 60lbs of those pounds were in water, but it did affect everything I did. I carried it around for awhile. So, I have been hovering at 80lbs lost and it's been dropping slowly. I've been out of the water stage for a few weeks now. Now it's into the real weight. Without exercising, I'm wondering how much more will continue to go just by eating correctly. I do not eat any processed foods. No more cheeses. Gone is the pizza :lol8: I basically eat chicken, eggs, oatmeal, veggies, soy/rice milk, water, decaffeinated-unsweetened iced tea, fruits, little pasta, Greek yogurt, my own trail mix and granola.
In the near future I'll be toying with making my own breads, drying fruits and a few other things. (All sodium free) My main goal is to keep this 300gms of sodium intake a day, combined with just about no sugar. Soy milk, fruits and yogurt will be my only source of sugar, which is not all that much.

I think the only way to truely lose weight and keep it off is a lifestyle change. The problem with a diet is after you drop some weight you go back to bad habits. You have to change your lifestyle to get healthy.

January I was 258, I'm now sitting at 240+-. My goal is 180.
I bike, I run, I'm fairly active, but I have hypothyroidism, so here I am, I am seriously thinking of going the low carb route as well.

Last month I weight 256, and I am planning on weighing 200 by May of 2009.

Way to be! With how hard core you are Shane, I always forget that you are older than me. I have recently reached the point in my life that I realize if I don't slim down now, I will only get bigger. I figure I am still young enough that I can get control of this.
so I'd thought Id join in...currently I weight 205 and I use to weight 170 two years ago. Stupid winters - they always kill me.
But today, I finally got myself a personal trainer and got a membership here in Kaysville to the Sportsplex and been running 2miles+ everyday at least 4x a day - and so far in one week I lost two pounds (fat weight - there is a "special" scale at they gym that measures how much fat on ya and so far I lost 2lbs - now I'm only 14% fat of my body. haha.
and also, tanya and her every weekend hikes has really inspired me to stay active and do something like that: so three weeks ago I climbed waterfall Canyon in Ogden; two weeks ago was Adams Canyon, last week was Bair Canyon, this week will be waterfall canyon again. So thanks tanya fo the inspiration!

Great job, everyone!
Yeah, the regular activity really helps. Two years ago, I made no changes whatsoever to my diet, but spent the spring/summer going on at least one hike every set of days off (I work 5-on, 3-off, so once every 8 days). They were mostly pretty serious hikes (8-12 hours, and 3500-5500 feet of vertical gained then lost.) By the end of the summer, I went from 225 down to 200 pounds.
Gained much of it back over the next year and a half... :(
Last 4 months - lost all that, plus another 12 pounds besides. Waist has gone from a 38 to a 34 - and an easy, comfortable 34 at that. My belt went from the last notch down to the first one - and now I've had to add 2 holes to it. I found some old jeans in the closet, 15 years old, fit perfectly. In fact, a little bit loose. At least as importantly, my blood pressure has dropped from about 138/90 to 115/75. I'd like to get the diastolic down into the 60s, but I can live with the current reading. Literally.
This time the weight loss is a mix of increased activity and counting calories (1800-2000 a day in loss mode, 2200-2400 in maintain mode.) I'm alternating between losing and maintaining - a couple weeks of losing, then a week of maintaining. Trying to make a sustainable lifestyle change. I kept a log of [b]everything[/i] I ate for about 3 months - with calories and sodium listed - to become more aware of my eating habits, and more conscious of my actual intake and how to control it.

I still however weigh 232.
I should spend more time excersizing, but often fall short. Less interenet and less eating is what I should do.
Pothole canyons are real motivator and I recently did some with my brother. Ever do shoulder stands when both members weight 230? It ain't pretty and made me think that I should shed some pounds.

I tried Atkins few years ago and it worked miracles. Then I got married, heh. Anyway, it works. I think part of the deal is that while eggs on bacon looks delicious there's just so much meat, eggs and cheese you can eat in a day. After a while you ration yourself because it's just that filling. That's my feeling anyways. I should give it another try.

Today I started the South Beach Diet. My wife is Hypoglycemic and this was recommended to her. I, of course, made the mistake of agreeing to do it with her. No carbs for 2 WEEKS!!!! I currently sit around 190 and am hoping to get to 175. A whole lot less crap and working out every other day. I think I can get it done.

Getting older makes it really tough. Having the desire to exercise and diet just isn't that easy anymore. I'm fortunate to be 64 and have no ailments so it's easy to stay in a routine that seems to work.
We've been trying to do about a 5 mile hike each weekend. Certainly does help.
I recently changed my diet from a "whatever lunch" to tuna or turkey wraps every day. We do eat pretty healthy for dinner but I'm not cutting out meat or anything else.
It's great to see everybody caring about themselves. :2thumbs:

I'm 205, would like to be 180. Maybe i'll have to try one of these low carb diets...I've seen so many people yo-yo, that I've never actually put any to the test. Where's a good list of foods you can and can't eat on South Beach, or Atkins?
I'm going to start doing some kind of exercise 5+ days a week. Went jogging last night. :2thumbs:

Wow, you guys do really well with watching what you eat. :2thumbs:
As for me, I do cardio work every day, endurance nearly every day, weight training ever other day, and biking now nearly every day...not to mention that my job is highly physically demanding - no time to sit down much - when I do sit and 'rest' I fall asleep :haha:
I don't count calories, I dont cut out the fat, just keep it low. I eat healthy lean portions of varieties of meat, beans, legumes, peanut butter, etc., fair amounts of veggies...keep the carbs low...whole grains, 'healthy snacks' ....sugar free drinks, even though I have a real weakness for diet drinks..............anyway, after all this my weight fluctuates between 190 and 200. Muscle weighs more than fat and I don't have much fat on me anymore but I definitely agree that the older you get the harder it gets to keep trim or even close. Size 34 pant, 44 upstairs, large everything in sizes...I guess thats all there is :ne_nau: nothing exciting really.

Maybe you do like me. When I do these really hard hikes/canyons I eat more that day and the next day because I am exhausted and beat up. I usually gain weight after my weekend adventures. But at least they keep me fit and strong - but they have not been the best for weight loss. For that a daily exercise program that is not too extreme works best so you can lower your calories, exercise and not feel the need to have to recover.

For several years I have been struggling to lose weight. I tried everything, Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers. About 4 weeks ago, a few of my co-workers and I decided to try our own "The Biggest Loser" program. I am winning so far!
I quit drinking soda, cut back on my portions, eat healthier, more veggies, less junk food, brisk walk 4 to five miles every day, weights every other day and right now I am at 225. I have lost 20 pounds in a month and man do I feel better.
Last weekend my girls and I hiked Angel's Landing in Zions and felt great. The key for me is that this has been a total lifestyle change and I intend on keeping it up. I'm close to retirement age at my job and I want to be able to enjoy those years playing with my kids and grandkids....not sitting around the house eating chips and watching the tube.
Wish me luck...I need it!
I think I'm gonna give it a try with no carbs as of today also.

I guess I'll chime in. January 2006, I join WeightWatchers, I weighed 298. Big boy. Over the next year I lost 68 lbs. Figured I could do the whole WW thing myself and save the $12 a week. Over 2007 I gained back 30lbs. January 2008, start WW again, bit the bullet and joined the local 24 hr fitness. Down 28 lbs to a weight of 232 over the past five months. Looking to hit 210 by the end of the year.
I will say this, all along I've been active in the outdoors, hitting canyons 2-3 times a month, hiking, snowshoeing, snowboarding, dirtbiking, etc.. And I've always felt that even though I was 260 I was still hiking strong or doing whatever and enjoyimg myself.
I used to really worry and be self concious in the outdoors when I would encounter other hikers, canyoneers, etc. You know, fat belly in thin wicking shirt hanging over wasit strap, but now I just don't care, I've found that I can keep up and I've learned that as long as I can do the things I enjoy that its okay to be whatever size I am.
My goal to lose weight wasn't to be a stronger hiker or better whatever, but to be heathier so I can be around longer for my kids.

Yeah, big kudos to you all. I think losing weight is TOUGH. Particularly hard for me because I have NO will power AT ALL. Maybe I should say no self control! haha. Fortunately, I'm at a good weight - 137 at 5'9" and havent really gained or lost more that a few pounds for the last 8 or so years. I would like to get down to 130 so I can be faster though (power to weight ratio) but damn, I like them sweets (and wine!)!
Really, weight loss/gain is all bout calories in - calories out. I try to exercise very regularly so that I can eat and drink what I want and just burn more than I take in. It really helps to keep a food log - I did that for a while to see if I was staying within a good calorie intake, and it was a great tool. I have a calorie calculator that I used to add up EVERYTHING I ate, figured out the number of calories I should take in for my age/weight/activity level (there are calculation methods for that, if anyone wants to find out how, let me know), and then did the math. Try it!
Best of luck to you all - keep it up!! :2thumbs:

I have been losing about 3/4 of a pound per day for nearly two weeks now. I have changed almost nothing other than being aware of my calories and what I'm ramming down my maw. My 12th anniversary is next week, I have gained about 8lbs every year since I got married. They slowly snuck on insidiously without me really noticing or caring. It also was my 39th birthday a month ago. My goal is to get back down to 200 by 40.
In my 20's 200 was an ideal weight for me, I am a big boy but only 5'10". I suspect now at a later age I may want to get down to 180 or so, but 200 by 40 will stoke me to no end. Time to get some more exercise going too. I still hike a lot but with the wife and kids we go slow, I end up standing around a lot so I don't feel like I get much physical benefit. Definitely no cardio hiking with them.

Here's one I found, not the same one I used, my husband has a calculating method we used (they're all pretty much the same, though), this will get you started. Figure out how many calories you should take in based on your activity level, age and weight, then consume less. There are also websites to calculate how much you burn in different types of exercise, factor that in, too. Keep a log, it's a great tool.

Yep, it's all about how many calories go in, and how many are used. Burn more calories, tip the balance in your favor. If you are more sedentary, then you need to take in fewer calories than your body needs and uses each day as you go about your regular business.

I know the cure for PMS!
back rubs, and avoidance.
It only works for men though.

So I've been tracking what I'm eating and my calorie intake. I have a program on my computer called Balance Log, that calculates how many calories I need to take in to lose a pound per week, with my activity level and age/weight, etc. I have to keep 1440 calories per day (this is minus exercise, or only in take with no exercise). In other words, I can eat 2000 calories, if I burn 560 in exercise to equal 1440 for the day.
This is freakin' HARD! :-) I have been counting every single calorie, having to watch what I eat, think about what I'm putting in my body, blahblahblah.... 1440 isnt much, yet that is the max I can eat without exercise. No wonder weight sneaks up on us so easily!
(PS - Balance Log is a really great program. You can put in your goals, and then log daily food, which it calculates your calorie intake, and you log your exercise, and it calculates calories burned. Then you can track your daily balance and print weekly reports. It's fun to track and very informative)

GOOD NEWS IS GREAT NEWS!!!!! 30 lbs in 9 months is fantastic!!! The bad news is that you shouldn't be so negative. You aren't fat. :2thumbs: Congrats on your weight loss and keep up the good work!!!

I really don't mean to be negative. I am really excited about how things are going, and I don't look as heavy as I am. I just happen to have this spare tire that seemingly may never leave me.
Thanks Abirken!

Excellent job, DiscGo! Keep it up, for sure!
I've been backsliding over the last month. June 4th I was 7 pounds from my goal. In the last month, I've only lost 3 pounds. I blame it on a big hike on the second - inflammation and edema causing water retention. I should be at 180. Uh-huh.
At least, according to my Body Mass Index, I am now no longer "Obese". I am now not even "Overweight"! I am now "Normal Range"! Yesssss! 25.0!
While it is certainly a challenge for a lot of people to lose weight, the biggest obstacle is to keep it off once you've lost it. I mean, we all know those people who go out for a banana split to "celebrate" losing their goal in pounds. You see them next spring looking bigger and sadder than ever. I don't think I have any brilliant suggestions, except to say that the most nutritious foods are the best choices for people who want to stay thin. Fruits and vegetables, whole grain foods, water (that might be the most important.) Without adopting a whole new dietary lifestyle, the yo-yo cycle takes over.
Big challenge. Congratulations on losing the weight so far. Have confidence that you can lose more and keep it off.
P. S. My wife knows people at work who are diagnosed as type-II diabetic, who say to her, "I need to take my sugar pill so I can have some cake." 'Nuf said.

I have been steadily dropping since March, i adopted an entire lifestyle change and I LOVE IT, no weight watchers, no jenny craig, no starving no fads... Just eating better and less food than before. I hit the gym 3-5 times a week and have dropped 42 pounds which equals about 2.63 per week.. I feel great and look better :naughty: I will not gain this weight back, the powers of PMA are amazing...

20 minutes a day, 3 days a week
Bullshit!!!!
So I'm there on a treadmill in my gym this morning watching the tv and this ad comes on for a soloflex home gym thingy. The dude is ripped and says "only 20 minutes a day and 3 days a week"
WTF?!?!? I'm in the gym 4 days a week for over an hour each time and I don't even look remotely close to that. I suspect there must be some asterisks that I don't see. They must say something like this.
* Must not exceed 1200 calories a day, on days you use the soloflex you must also run a minimum of 5 miles or bike 20 miles, must take steroids and drink pasty protien shakes for at least one meal every day and on off days you must spend 3 hours in a gym with a personal trainer named Sven or Lars.

Frogger- I am crazy impressed! I thought I was doing well, but you have inspired me to do better! I have been eating between 1300 - 1500 calories a day monday - friday and going to town on Saturdays.
I read an article that compared metabolism confusion to muscle confusion, and it explained that it is good to have a caloric high once a week so that your body does not know how many calories to burn. That way it just keeps burning an increased amount.
My ankle did get pretty messed up from Noob Fest, and I have been much less active since then (:() but I am on the bend and feeling inspired thanks.
BTW- I am doing a triathlon in November at Orem Rec. We should get a Bogley team together for it.

Hmmmm.... my weight loss has hit a bit of a snag, but I think it's a good snag. I was trying to get down to 185 through good old fashion exercise and eating right.... I got down to about 187 but I'm now up to 190.... only thing is I have also dropped 2% of body fat.... that means I'm now replacing fat with muscle, which I guess is a good thing...
So maybe 190 is my ideal body weight?

A good way to shed weight is to get drunk nearly every day. Appetite is not as good after a while, plus you spend a lot of time sleeping, you drink plenty of water when hung over, food is simply not on your mind a lot, heh. Of course that works when you're young with few responsibilities, heh.
Oh yeah! But no ladies drinks. Just straight vodka or scotch.

Heroin addicts seldom eat and move their bowels even less frequently. There is also anorexia, bulimia, but that can get a little messy.

6 weeks ago I was 367 pounds
Now I am now 342 pounds
My goal is 200 pounds but I've got no idea when I will reach that. I'm just eating healthy and getting in as much activity as possible. Just a lifestyle change I guess. Lets see how far it takes me.

I just started boot camp at the Ogden Athletic Club. It's 3 days a week for 2 months from 6 am to 7 am. I weighed in at 312 pounds with a fat percentage at 35%. My goal is 230 pounds. But for some reason I want to accomplish dunking a basketball on a 10' hoop. Don't know why I just think that would make an academy award winning movie someday. I think I'll write a memoir about it and call it "DUNK". They say anything is possible. And that sounds like a pretty impossible goal. From going from rupturing my achiles tendon at age 33 to dunking a basketball on a regulation hoop at 35. We'll see how it plays out.

November 2009: 230 Pounds
Today: 212 Pounds
My goal is 200 pounds.
I'm not a snacker or big eater. Most of my extra weight came from too many glasses of red wine, stress and lack of exercise.
I'm now exercising every morning at 0500 before work and trying to run at least a mile every night.
Most liquor intake has been moderated if not eliminated. Instead of wine for dinner, I'm drinking milk.

October 2009: 165
Since then I stay between 165-168.
I am currently battling through the P90X videos. I exercise 6 days a week. It really is about consistent exercise, portion control and knowing the emotional triggers that make you want to eat when your not hungry. For me its TV. I love eating while watching TV and when I am bored too.

I miraculously dropped 12lbs in the first 7 days of August. Still losing... which is good, means less weight to huff up that mountain for the Xterra race. My goal is another 4lbs by race day.
