This story might be a little boring I apologize.
So last weekend I moved from Cedar City back to St. George. It was cheaper to live up there but driving 45 mins to work everyday sucks. Also with gas prices rising, driving 100+ miles everyday it isn't such a good deal anymore. Plus the wifey likes being closer to her mom, but anyways..... We bought a new house in St George and are going to rent out our house in Cedar.
So I arranged the move, rented the truck, bought lots of boxes, and 4 friends volunteered to help me move on Saturday. I was taking the trash out and my neighbor whose name is also Jake was walking to his car. He was an awesome neighbor, really friendly and on top of what's going on in the subdivision. Everytime I chat with him, he has awesome info. For example, in the contract for our townhouses it specifies the yard has to go out 15 feet. The builder trying to save money only built the brick wall out to 12 feet. So he's working with the builder to knock it down and extend it the full contract distance. I basically just signed the contract and didn't read the fine print so had no idea I'd even been ripped off. So I totally appreciate people like him who are detail oriented.
Anyways, I tell him he has been a wonderful neighbor and here is my cell phone in case the tenants thrash my place or throw loud parties, or whatever. He immediately offers to help me move. Since I already have 4 people coming and really just consider him an acquaintance more than a friend I say "oh that's ok I already have 4 people". He then responds "well 2 more will just help it go faster right?" I agree but don't want to put him out, but there is no way to refute his logic. So I agree. I tell him I feel bad taking advantage, but he insists that it is no trouble at all. He even mentions he will put a call in at his Ward(his church) and see if anyone else wants to come. I tell him sure but am thinking "who the hell wants to helps a stranger move"... How little I knew.....
So the next morning I pull the uhaul up, get all the moving blankets out and get ready for the big move. I head over to Mcdonalds and buy 10 egg mcmuffins for the moving crew. I figure I might as well buy everyone breakfast, lunch, and dinner as a thank you for helping me out. 9 oclock rolls around and a guy comes over. "Hey I'm Jakes friend and here to help you move", he says. I tell him how grateful I am for the extra help and we both start loading boxes. Needless to say, in the next 10 minutes about 9-10 guys showed up from the ward. Then about 9:30 my friends showed up. We got the entire house packed and loaded in about 2 hours. The mormons were extremely polite, they didn't even scratch one thing. I was just shocked!! They wouldn't even let me buy them lunch or eat the breakfast. They just drank some bottled water, wished me well, and left when everything was done. A complete stranger, who they will probably never meet again. Just to be nice. I've never been the recipient of such assistance, it felt really good. I didn't even know how to thank them... nice bottle of Tequila maybe??? (j/k)
Anyways, it was truly a bizarre experience, and it made my life so much easier. I'm still in shock to this day that it even happened and was not some weird dream. GO MORMONS!!
Anyways, just wanted to share what awesome people they are.
