In '03 I didn't have a choice, everyone was going, but I volunteered the second time. Stupid, and I knew what I was getting into too.

I never should have gone back to Iraq.

The worst part? I wish I was there now. I still miss it. There's no explaining it. That weird?

That all that weird. Allthough fleeting, I get those feelings of wishing I was back as well. However thats not the thing I would change. I would have done a little less partying and a lot more school. Seems like you can't do anything these days without that little piece of paper.

Nothing strange about that, my brother-in-green. Those who have never served just won't ever understand the camaraderie that occurs for those that are so close as to almost become family.

The regret will fade. Enjoy your family and life. You've done your duty.

I would never have dated a girl named Minerva.

We talked about marriage and got very serious but I knew it was all wrong. I tried dumping her 7 times and she kept coming back around as if we weren't dumped. Dating her made me think less of humanity and really opened my eyes to "users". I have never been as cheerful of a person for having dated her (and this was 8 years ago).

Anyway, I wish I never dated her!

If you could change one decision you have made....

That's a tough call.... because our mistakes are part of what makes us who we are. While I'm not happy with every choice I have ever made, some of my worst decisions were the biggest character builders and made me a stronger person.

I agree with Shane. I've not really got any regrets (what would be the point in regret?) about the choices I made. They weren't all good of course, but had I not made them I'd be an entirely different person than I am now. Might not even have these same wonderful kids....so pretty much, no regrets except one:

I was driving through a remote part of the desert with my family and my youngest (maybe 5 at the time) would not shut up. Her screaming and whining and so on got to me and in my frustration, I threatened to put her out of the car and leave her there. When the threat didn't work, I pulled over, put her out of her carseat on the side of the road and drove away.

I didn't drive far of course...only about 10 feet or so...
but still, I've never stopped feeling guilty about it. To this day, I'm not sure if it might have had some sort of adverse effect on her.

Good for you! One thing I can't stand is when parent say "If you don't stop" I'll do this or do that, but never actually mean it. My wife worked in a record store (CD store for you young whippersnappers) for years, and always complained about the parents who came in and walked around the whole store saying "Quit that, or we're going to leave!" over and over and over. They didn't mean it, and that's exactly what the kids learned. If I threaten the kids with something, I'd better damn well carry through. You did. Well done.

The one thing Id change is the date of my divorce! Id still marry that.... well Id still do that because if not Id of not of had my two oldest kids, but there was no reason to waste ten years of my life trying to make shit work with a woman I hated, and have since grown to despise.

As to sticking your kid on the side of the road... Id done that! Hes 4 now, 5 on the fourth of July, Iv never had to put him out to get the threat to work, just the pulling over and telling him to get outworked, now all i have to do is ask him if he plans on walking home and he behaves.
I wouldnt use it but I cant have him kicking the back of my seat! or screaming at the top of his lungs or hitting the other kids.
and sometimes...I really would like to stick him out and drive off!

If I hadn't gone through some of the crap I did back in 02-03 I'd have never been tough enough to stick it out...I'd have thrown in the towel and completed the move to Maui and never looked back. But , I agree 100 percent with 'that which does not kill us makes us stronger' adage... I'm afraid I've become a callous tough ole' bastard and I'm gonna stick around 'cause I CAN and want to , not because I 'have to'. YOU dont have to do anything you dont want to - really.

No lie though........you really have to be careful about who (whom?) you date these days. A person can seem *normal* and everything seems cool, and then some little something (like you weren't able to answer your phone for a couple of hours) just sets them off. :ne_nau: One guy that I went out with a few times basically went from normal to psycho during apprx. a 2 hour period of leaving phone messages. I was busy with a client and sending my calls to voice mail, and he and I had plans to meet later that day. First message was nice and sweet and ended with "see you later." Next message was "Well......guess you're busy. Talk to you later." Third was something like "Well.....I guess you're busy, but you could answer just to let me know we're still on for tonight." By the time he got to the last message he accused me of blowing him off, being rude and inconsiderate and if I didn't want to see him anymore, why didn't I just say so, why did he always pick women who treated him badly, etc....etc. :eek2:

I decided it was best not to continue the relationship. :haha:

I don't think it's strange unless you actually miss the killing/destruction part. Surely you don't miss that part of being over there? The death & destruction, hopelessness and fear wrought by war? :ne_nau:

It seems to me that in a situation such as war, natural disaster, or any other extremely traumatic experience, that all the walls between people come down. Alligator is supposed to taste like chicken too, but this bayou girl never took the plunge and tried it. :nono: I was tricked into tasting the frog legs. I didn't actually see the legs, just the meat on a plate and was told it was chicken.

Personally, if I want something that tastes like chicken, I will eat chicken! :haha:

I can't believe a bayou girl has never tasted gator before. :nono:

I have eaten BBQ alligator, it was really good. I would order it again in a heartbeat if it were no the menu. But like all BBQ I think the preparation and sauce have a lot to do with things....

I have had Rattlesnake Sausage and it was good. The Buffalo Bistro on the east side of Zion serves it as an appetizer.

I've also eaten frog legs... There used to be a great seafood restaurant in Galveston TX I would visit occasionally, can't remember the name. But We would order the big combo meal with a little of everything, and that included two frog legs.

I have eaten a lot of different stuff.... I love food and I love to try new things...

It's just that I had a story told to me about what alligators eat (and I'm sure it's true with a lot of different critters) but it made me kinda sick, so I never wanted to try it. I did try BBQ goat once at Jazz Fest and it was pretty good. Of course, enough sauce on anything can make it taste good! :haha: If you really like different foods to try, you need to head down to N.O. for JazzFest sometime. They've got everything from A to Z.
