View Full Version : 100 Day SUGAR FREE Challenge

I decided to cut all sugar out of my diet for 100 days straight. Fruit and honey are OK in moderation. I started yesterday. Today is day #2. I'm already jonesin' for some peanut M&M's.

I intend for this thread to be my 100-day journal. Please keep me on task by insulting me when (if) I cheat, and encouraging me along the way...

August 11th I'll celebrate by eating an entire pan of fudge brownies in one sitting.

I'll help you. :haha: I am around 35 days sugar-less now. When I was in the hospital, I got a wake-up call when they tested my sugar levels and they were on the high side. Both my grandmothers were diabetic, so it opened my eyes up big time. Quite frankly, I really do feel a lot better already and my sugar levels are back to normal. :2thumbs:

Good luck dude. Well, luck has nothing to do with it. Self-discipline is key. I quit smoking almost 3 months ago and it wasn't hard except for the first few days. Although no sugar at all? What are you going to eat?

Where does alcohol fit into the picture? Are you cutting out alcohol or are alcohol sugars OK?

I do this every year now. I laid off sugar last year for 30 days in the springtime to see if it would stop my allergies.

It did. Completely.

I am in the middle of it now, and loving life because hayfever ain't buggin' me!!!

Just curious....

Why are you trying to eliminate sugar? Diet? Health?

Does this also mean that you'll be omitting all products with "high fructose corn syrup" listed in their ingredients?

I think temporary diets are a bad idea. They are why weight loss programs don't work. I believe in committing to lifelong dietary choices. After all, if eating a certain way is good for you today or the next 100 days, it's good for you for the rest of your life.

don't let me get you side-tracked...
http://foodfrenzy.freedomblogging.com/files/2007/07/desserts.jpg

ok sorry, I'm a jerk.
I have tried to cut out delicious sugar, including high fructose junk. It's so hard. The worst for me is the late night urges for a sweet snack. I am getting better though. When I get a craving I started eating celery. I love the taste and the crunch helps. I also cut out soda, I lost about 10 lbs because of no more soda. We drink crystal light at dinner now instead of kool-aid. The kids don't mind it either.

Good luck!!!

R

I will add that I don't have much of a sweet tooth anyway. It's easy for me to give up desserts. My Achilles Heel is salt.

rockgremlin
05-05-2008, 12:44 PM
I don't have any pressing need to do this. I'm not overweight. I'm actually pretty fit. I run regularly. A few weeks ago I ran the SLC 1/2 marathon in under 2 hours. I don't have diabetes. Processed sugars (including high fructose corn syrup) aren't very healthy, and I just decided to give it a try on a whim. I'm curious to see what effect it will have on my overall health/mood/appearance if any.

I don't drink alcohol, so no problem there either.

When going on any diet restrictions like this, it's much easier to have a support group. Otherwise if you and only you know about the diet, cheating is easy. You guys are my support group. :2thumbs:

And yes....I know I'm Krazy, so feel free to remind me of that regularly.

Sounded like a good round number. Straight sugar in the form of candy/soda/cakes etc will be no problem. The difficult thing will be to avoid sugar in things like bbq sauce, salad dressings, breads, etc. Sugar is in EVERYTHING!!

Good luck man, I'm right there with you, 2 weeks.

When you check the ingredients, you'll see there's sugar in almost EVERYTHING. So you might have better luck limiting yourself to 20 grams of carbs per day.

Crystal Light single serve packets and a liter bottle of water have been good to me (except when I have diet mtn dew)

You'll find all kinds of sugar free stuff, it just may give you the sheetz.

You know, I keep hearing bad stuff about the aspartame & phenalanawhatever, and I'm starting to not believe it.

Some people say it turns to formaldehyde at room temperature? I'm not too sure about that either.

I think sugar in the same dosage does more damage.

Ya, I'm not buying into the whole artificial sweetener scare. I have yet to see one case of art. sweetener-related cancer or other malady. But on the other hand, the ill effects from eating too much sugar are everywhere and well documented: obesity, adult-onset diabetes, etc.

Supposedly saccharin was proven back in the 80's to cause cancer, but to this day it is still sold to the general public and has yet to be banned by the FDA. Same could be said about MSG, but that's another topic for another time.

Wow, 100 days without sugar, of ANY kind?? Seems impossible, but you are inspiring me. I'm especially curious about the "no more allergies", that alone is worth the effort. Unfortunately, I'm a sugar addict. Sweets. Love 'em.

I think I could maybe, possibly, well, sort of cut out sugars, maybe. The problem is, I'd have to give up red wine too. Can I hop on board and just cut out random sweets??

I could give up complex carbs much much easier than sugar - bread, pasta, blah, who cares, hardly eat them as it is ... but cake????? I love cake.

Good luck to ya! I"m impressed with how many of you on here are doing, or have done the same thing.... hmmmmm.... I"m inspired.....

Dagoba bars are by far the BEST chocolate out there. Sweetened with only a tad of evaporated cane juice (so you don't pollute your body with all that artificial sweetner). One small piece off of the entire bar is enough to give you a chocolate fix for days. You can buy the them at your natural market. My favorite is the Dark Chocolate with chiles!!

Day 21

Three weeks down. Now I've got momentum on my side. All of my friends/family think I'm krazy, but it's worth it.

It's no wonder obesity is a big problem in our society. Almost everything is inundated with sugar. Sugar for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and then an extra dose of sugar for dessert, and sugar for snacks inbetween.

Americans are ADDICTED to sugar!! Disgusting!!

Yo Felicia ~ you still doin' your no carbs thang?

Felicia
05-25-2008, 04:28 PM
Mostly! Went to wine county for 5 days last weekend.....had a birthday and this is a holiday weekend! :haha:

I have stayed away from "processed carbs" and "processed sugar". Alcohol sugar does not count, but I still get the Headache if I over indulge.

For my birthday a co-worker bought me a Vente Frapachino from Starbucks with whip cream on top and I enjoyed every moment of the consumption process. Huge headache later......

Usually every Lent I give up caffeine, chocolate, alcohol and sugar. I did not do it this year.....and I feel "off my mark" right now. At the end of this week, I will be good!!! Thanks for the support! (I do this every year for medical reasons.....I passed this year with flying colours anyways!) :roflol:

You know, once you get rid of the sugar, it is really easy to get rid of the caffeine. Try it!!! You will feel better. :2thumbs:

Isn't it funny how they try to break you? "Oh, you deserve this cake" "Just have a piece of chocolate"

Then you'll start hearing crazy poop about how "sugar is a necessary nutrient" and complete GARBAGE like that. People just get jealous, that's all.

Keep it up man.

Well, that, and.... :haha:

Actually, fat is energy. It doesn't "explode" like carbs/sugar, or caffeine, but it's a more steady source of energy, and it doesn't peak you out or make you dive. That's the whole concept of the atkins diet, is to reduce the carbs, but fat is still ok.

Other diets we know, will reduce the fat, and you'll see that any "light" or "fat free" product will have an increased amount of carbs.

for those thinking about carbs, fats, and stuff ... just keep in mind that your brain cells normally consume glucose for energy ... and these come from carbohydrates.

you want to maintain a sufficient level of glucose in your bloodstream so that your brain functions well, but not so high that insulin is secreted causing a sweeping removal of glucose from the bloodstream. complex carbohydrates are ideal on both fronts (unlike refined carbohydrates and sugars which tend to cause rapid spikes in glucose proportional to the amount consumed).

generally speaking i agree with you, but quantity is a major issue when it comes to sugars. case in point, fruit juice. there is a HUGE difference between eating an orange in a period of 5 minutes and drinking a large glass of fruit juice. in many ways it shares the same problems as drinking sugared sodas in the way your body responds to it.

Yes this is true! I'm a HUGE fan of H2O........moderation is key with anything and Americans wayyyyyyyy over consume. This information is hard to find but I have found this from a Velonews article: "Under normal conditions at rest, your brain and nervoussystem require a minimum of 150 grams of glucose daily."

Article link: http://www.velonews.com/article/13178

Now the search is on for a carb to glucose ratio calcualtion.

Thanks for the fix. You are correct in the above post which ties well into the theme of the original post processed sugar is bad- it is simple carbs that cause you to crash. I am amazed at the number of energy gels that contain simple sugar and are not made with maltodextrin which can give you lasting energy. Or they have both but mixing them is not good either (harder to digest and assimilate).

Avoid sugar it is the devil. I don't care how good those doughnuts look or that Twix bar or that can of soda you will thank yourself if you give it up.

I have really enjoyed all the information that has been posted. I find that I have been feeling much better without the sugar, but for me no artificial sweeteners seem to be just as important, as well as caffeine.

I have begun tweaking my diet and I agree that it is very hard to think with no carbs! When I know that I'm going to have to think a lot, I have been adding natural complex carbs to my diet and I notice a big change. A spoonful of peanut butter has saved me several times lately. *lol*

The human body is so fascinating! :2thumbs:

So RG: How's it going for you?

It was going really well until yesterday, when I UNKNOWINGLY ate a big fat slice of chocolate truffle. ~~ A friend of mine said that she was gonna make me a yummy sugar free dessert, and brought it over yesterday. I dug into it quite heartily, and called later to thank her. It was then that she said she had made it with sugar, not Splenda like she had originally planned. :frustrated:

Aside from that, I haven't KNOWINGLY touched sugar. For those of you following a similar diet (no sugar, ok on carbs), a really good breakfast is a bowl of plain oatmeal with a tablespoon of organic sugar free crunchy peanut butter.

Your daily Carbohydrate requirement is: 369 grams.

:roflol: No friggin way. I've been capping off at about 40 grams a day for about a year. Once in a while I'll splurge and eat absolute garbage, but on average it's been 40 grams a day.

Wow! 40gms a day are you only eating meat? The Odwalla bar I brought to work has 43 gms in it alone. I bonk without some carbs but maybe for some people the brain doesn't need as much?

Hey has anyone here tried hemp hearts? If you haven't, I highly recommend them especially for carb limited diets. Full blown out amounts of amino acids, Omega 3, 6 and 9 and TONS of protein to keep you full. You can order them online or go to your healthfood store. If you like macademia nuts, you will like these. They melt on your tongue and have a very mild nutty flavor. I've just started them and sprinkle a few TBSPs on my yogurt every morning. Yummy Yummy!!!! :2thumbs:

Still going strong. I'm coming up on half way now. It's really not so tough anymore. I have momentum on my side now. The other day I was eating trail mix, and an M&M accidently snuck into the handfull I popped in my mouth. I can't believe that I actually spit it out! :lol8:

In spite of the momentum, I will be glad to see day 100. I really miss hot chocolate chip fudge brownies with a double scoop of vanilla ice cream melting over the top. I think that is what I will eat for dessert on day 100.

The health benefits of this are quite noticeable. You drop weight very easily if you can go off sugar for an extended time, especially if you mix in exercise at least 3 times a week. I highly recommend a sugar free lifestyle, and will probably continue this for the long term, only not quite as strict as I am now. :2thumbs:

Well I'm glad to see we got this thread back on track after all that nauseating chatter about men.

I DID go the distance at 100 days, and I kept the weight off for a while, but it's all back now. I'm starting up a new regimen currently. I'm 8 days in so far.

The best advice I can give is read all nutrition labels, cause sugar is in EVERYTHING. You've gotta regard sugar as a toxin and treat it accordingly, and avoid it as such. Once you get some weeks under your belt, you'll start to feel really good. Then after a few months you'll reach the "snob" stage --- where you're so focused that you sneer at others around you who are indulging in the sugar revelry. This is where you'll see the most significant progress, although you won't be the most popular guy around.

Don't just avoid sugar though...eat lots of lean proteins (poultry, fish, etc), fresh veggies, and whole grains. Drag exercise into the mix and you'll easily drop up to 30+ lbs.

Check out the 17-Day Diet. It is a combination of reducing sugar and getting rid of processed foods. I've lost fifteen pounds in the last thirty days. I've felt great the entire time and have had no side effects. What I like about the program is that there are lots of suggested menus, so I don't have to keep trying to decide what to eat next. I like that I can still have fruit that I like, but before 2:00 PM. I like chicken fish and turkey; not missing beef or pork.

No honey or guava nectar etc...etc for me because it's still sugar even though it's a healthier version. Just my preference for my situation. But PLEASE don't take away my Coke Zero or Diet Dr. Pepper.....leave me one vice! :haha: I know artificial sweeteners aren't good etc...etc.. but I try to keep it to one 10 oz bottle a day. I'm avoiding sugar because when I have sugar, I want more! I do not like artificial sweeteners, just tastes too chemically for me. I use a spoon of sugar free preserves in my plain greek yogurt to add flavor and texture. I have a half of an orange, grapefruit or apple before 2:00PM. Thereafter, I do not consume any sugar.

I would suggest to dump the sugar, but go moderate to high with the caffeine. Caffeine boosts your metabolism. I don't know if you've taken Hydroxycut before, but that stuff is LOADED with caffeine -- something like 500 - 1000mg per day. It's bad for ya if you have a bad ticker, but otherwise healthy hearts should tolerate it.

I seemed to trim down very fast once I cut the carbs along with the caffeine. My philosophy was since fat is energy, try to have that as my only source of energy, hence burning more of it.

But yeah it's not as simple as that. Caffeine can help kick start the metabolism, but in the end I do worry about my heart health too. I'm a huge consumer of caffeine.
