Hey guys,
Any ideas for a one day getaway that is not too far from SLC and won't have a lot of snow? What can I say, I'm optimistic. Where are those caves near SLC?

West facing routes might not be too bad. Mount Olympus for example...at least the first part. I'm sure others will have better suggestions.
I'd second Mt Olympus, with yesterday's storm everything will be very muddy/snowy now. Mt Olympus is very exposed to the sun and will most likely be dry most of the way.

have you been to the top of frary peak (antelope island)?
it's lovely this time of year with the snowy peaks encircling, however right now is usually the time the trail to the peak is closed due to sheep lambing season. i couldn't find any current information about the closure. seems like something that should be posted on the internets.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna give Mt. Olympus a try tomorrow in the early morning.
Stefan, I drove around Antelope Island last weekend. I gotta tell you, Buffalo Point sucks. No buffalos, just "signs" of buffalos and plenty of little flies, heh. I'll keep Frary Peak in mind.

olympus is a great hike, steep trail (used to be steeper) and seemingly endless.
the peak offers a great vantage point on the great salt lake, the salt lake valley and the twin peaks.
my preference is to do the peak as an overnight, as there is no better place to catch a sunset.
here's a pic i took during early sunset, on the approach to the peak(late may).

i hope everyone does ... i was just trying to entice with the sunset shot. olympus is just one of those peaks that is so much more fun when you can spend the night up there. :ne_nau:

little black mountain (south ridge of city creek cyn) is one i've enjoyed many a time. you can probably find it in vernath's book. while the terrain may not be as spectacular as olympus, it's got a great view of all the ridges to little cottonwood all stacked up one behind another. the peak is further along the ridge than the immediate high point you reach.

Hey guys.
I got pretty far on trail to Mt. Olympus but not all the way to the top, heh. I blame it on a massive hangover (lots of tequila last night), lots of snow (the hike up snowy hill in that forest was no fun). I also quit smoking just three months ago so maybe that had something to do with it. I don't know about everybody else but that's some steep trail. It would be a lot easier without all that snow. But there were a couple tough guys out there who made it to the top. Anyway, here are some pics if you'd like to see:
