Area code required next year, even for local calls
April 9th, 2008 @ 8:00am

Tom Callan reporting

Perhaps you are one of those people who received a note in the mail from Qwest, informing you that soon 10 digits will be the only way to reach out and touch.

"We're sorry. Your call cannot be completed as dialed." That is what you'll hear next spring if you don't dial the area code, even if you are dialing your neighbor.

"On March 1 of 2009, you will be required to use the 801 before your phone number to complete even a call across the street," explained Qwest spokesman Gary Younger.

He says you can keep the 801 area code, but if you ask for a new number after March 29, 2009, you will get the new 385 area code.

He says you can start dialing the 10 digits as early as this June.

This is stupid :frustrated: All this technology and the telephone companies can't solve this. Hell, they have to tell me I don't need to dial a 1... why can't they just drop it automatically for me.

Stop being lazy you two. It is only 3 extra digits. :roflol:

It is going to be annoying when you get a phone number and you aren't sure if it is 801 or 385

Yeah, this blows.

My area has been "selected" to lose the 801 and now I must remember to use 385 when giving out my number and when calling out.

:lame:

Now I have to get all new gang tattoos. :lol8:

The Salt Lake Valley expanded 3x since I came here back in the 1990. I am honestly not surprised to see this change. If you paid attention in grade school, you'd be able to count to 9,999,999, that's how many numbers the 7 digit current phone number yields. In the state of Utah we have over 2.3 million people now.

I personally have 3 numbers (home, cell and office direct line), plus a fax number, my wife has a cell number plus her fax at work. That's 6 numbers for two people.

This is the same reason we will be switching to IPv6 very soon for the internets.

Start using condoms people! Then we will save the planet Earth, save on energy, and won't have to switch to 10 digit phone numbers :five: problem solved! :lol8:

:lol8: Ya, that was my point, if the bitch is about a 10 digit phone number, wait for the IPv6 :eek2:

We have two exchanges here in Connecticut, we only need to use the area code if we're dialing outside the area.

"They" have been saying 'very soon' for very long. Heard anything recent?
Things like NAT have helped us stick with 4 longer.

Oh for sure, jumar. It will be a long process. Most *nix OSes now come pre-configured with IPv6. It took 45 years to build internet on IPv4, so can't just make the switch to IPv6 over night. But it will happen.

i heard China had a 5 or 10 year plan in place for it.
