Marc Giauque reporting

Some hikers and bikers in Corner Canyon above Draper may encounter some unsettling signs. They warn about some possible cougar sightings.

The signs, posted by Draper City, say it's possible the animal may even have taken down a moose in the area. But Division of Wildlife Resources conservation officer Mike Roach says that would be a rare thing.

"That cougar might take a small calf, but an adult moose is very unlikely to be attacked by a cougar," Roach said.

Roach says he can't recall a confirmed cougar attack on a human in Utah, but he says it has happened in other states.

He adds the foothill areas are the winter habitat for many animals like deer, elk, moose and cougars, and many haven't moved higher into the hills yet.

I recall a story from Vancouver Island, BC, of a 70 year-old man attacked by a cougar. He killed the cat with his jack-knife.

When I first moved to Draper there was a cougar sighting in my area. The deer come down to the golf course area to graze and the cougar would follow them. I've been told that the cougar (or cougars) live in the red rock area across from where the So. Mtn. country club house is located on Mike Weir Dr.

I understand Draper is typically "Ute" country but placing signs to warn folks about cougars? That is a little extreme wouldn't you say. As a cougar I can confirm that I would never try to take an adult moose and we in Cougartown like to call small calves "veal". We generally don't attack humans, this is true. But I know that Rebels attack cougars. However, I did witness one cougar cheerleader attack a Ute cheerleader a few years back but that was in Cougartown. Also, cougar cheerleaders are a different breed of cougars so they are excused. And who is a Roach to warn people about cougars anyway? :haha:

Yup.... Draper is filled with cougars. :haha:

Slang of the Week: cougar (noun)

an older woman who is romantically interested in younger men

Cougar refers to an older woman, usually in her 30s-40s[9] who sexually pursues younger men in their 20's or early 30's. Term used by TV series 30 Rock (episode "Cougars"), How I Met Your Mother (episode "Aldrin Justice"), Supernatural (episode "Red Sky at Morning"), the NBC reality TV show Age of Love and One Tree Hill.

On film, it was used in 2004's National Lampoon's Going the Distance and in 2007's Ocean's Thirteen. The 2007 film Cougar Club was dedicated to the subject - its plot was about two males creating a club where parties are thrown where male members get the chance to meet and have sexual encounters with "cougars".

Slang lesson #2

Bat n., slang term used to describe 50-ish women who are sexually attracted to older men (very rare).

I know I've never seen one.
