1. Start a business

My dad, who has been self-employed almost all his life, used to tell me that

I like it! especially the TAKE UP A SPORT- I think they really hit home when they said this: AMEN!

Sure, you want to be healthy, but the whole treadmill-running, iPod-listening, 45-minutes-after-work thing is a little anti-social, don

I have done all those things at one time or another. Maybe that's why I'm so gosh-darned happy.

I'll confess, my book isn't a big seller. It's titled: How To Operate a Motor Home toilet For Dummies. At least it served a need, kept me from going in and explaining the buttons, not to mention the dos and don'ts.

I really like this list. I'm wondering just what percentage of people go through life without being able to check off more than 3 or 4 out of the ten.

1. Start a business - Pimped my laser and automation skills out as contract labor for 18 months. Didn't have a clue what I was doing but will do it again sometime. Fortunately, my unique technical abilities allow me to dictate a few more terms to my employer than most.

2. Organize a group - I host dinner parties and BBQ's all the time and a few regular attendees (including me) actively compete to see whose dish will be the biggest hit. I'm also a member of several local clubs just so I can get updates about what is on their calendar. I lead a group hike once or twice per year, group ski once per year, and a half-dozen group rides too.

3. Volunteer - I try and keep a 501c3 non-profit cycling advocacy group together. Most of the money from our annual fundraiser goes to provide disabled persons access to outdoor activities. It's like herding cats, nobody's ever happy with the job I do, and nobody's ever willing to step in and do a better one either.

[b]4. Take an active role in your children
