Man burned in construction accident
March 5th, 2008 @ 11:00am
Marc Giauque reporting
A construction worker suffered severe burns after an attempt to thaw frozen ground went awry. It happened near 1300 East and 6200 South.
A strong smell of gasoline, some burned concrete forms, and charred clothing remained in the area where the man was burned. He was pouring gas on the ground and a co-worker ignited it in an attempt to thaw the area so they could pour concrete.
"The fire came right back to the can," explained Deputy Fire Marshall Russ Groves. He says the flames burned the man's face and torso.
Coworker Jose Luis Martinez helped put out the flames, and the victim was flown the hospital with second- and third-degree burns.
The fire is under investigation.
