I'm a guitarist for 19 years, and I'm a metal fan. I get a strange look from people I know, when they hear I'm not a fan of these following bands.

KoRn - they're sound is too loose and flangie

Tool - Enough already, Maynard

Marilyn Manson - ooh, he's scary, he must know true evil. that makes him talented?

Nine Inch Nails - a girl ruined my life; waaahhhhh waahhhhhh

http://music.cycnet.com/fctp/img/nine_inch_nails_2.jpg

System of a Down - I'm not buying into the whole "crazy" sound

all of you should either stop listening to the radio or do something more useful

Definitely. It's not a jealousy thing, just getting tired of hearing about no-talent idiots thinking they're bad ass.

Imagine, a musician being bad ass, because they play an instrument. :lol8:

Metallica,... they are probably going to try and sue me for posting their gay pic. They sued some lipstick company for making a color "metallica" And they are a bunch of talentless douchebags.

"Sleep with one eye open, clutching your wallet tight."

Napster was great you assholes! And the lead singer from Primus (les claypool tried out for them once and they didn't have the foresight to grab him. He is the greatest bass player in the world and not good enough for their sorry ass? Nuff said... I could on for hours..... *deep breaths* *relax crickey* *sigh*

I do laugh when sue hoaxes come up though, like this one. http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/07/17/ctv.metallica/

Ditto, anything past the black album. Even if they played a concert with nothing but And Justice For All and earlier, I wouldn't go.

I'm with you guys on the Metallica thing. Can't stand em. Another one is Nirvana. Hate em. Dave Grohl I like but Nirvana as a whole I don't like. Creed. Suck. I was happy when they broke up but then reformed and sound exactly the same. Linkin Park. How about trying something new for ONCE. The list could go on but I think that one covers for now. So lets hear the arguments and taunting!!!

Ditto - I like, well, mostly like the black album but nothing else they have is worth listening to.
I hate Limp Biskit or however you spell it. Korn I just dont get. Insane Clown Posse...whats up with this crap?! Marilyn Manson...Im sorry but if that crazy bitch Rose McGowan cant even stand him theres something seriously wrong with him. OH, you got me started now! I would rather listen to Rage Against the Machine than this stuff...
Beech, I consider myself very diverse in the music field. I like alot of stuff....old drummer that I am, But I agree that someone who doesnt see Claypools talent is messed up in the head...they dont have to like it but the guys a genious! Victor Wooten...completely underated.
- also dont like a number of the current popular 'boy band' stuff...Hinder?... Im mean really. Alot of these guys just start sounding the same after a while. :five:

ha ha, i'm with you. Everytime I hear Linkin Park, I picture the singer telling his mom to stay out of his room. It feels like I'm listening to a Jr High band.

That said, Alex just asked me who the band is in this video, and he's gonna get it. :lol8:

I'll probably get lynched but...

THE USED!!!

(Sorry, refusing to waste my time searching for an image)

Can't stand'em. Known them since before stupid coke-head Bert (or Robbie as I know him) joined up and turned them all into screaming pansies (remember Dumb Luck? That was them).

I don't know if the bassist is still the original one, but the original guy was a really cool guy. The original guitarist is really talented, but who needs talent when you're on the radio? Now his skills are on the back burner because emo-abrasive is all the rage.

I could be considered (by some) as a musician and I completely understand the inner hatred some of us feel toward other "musicians" that don't even have any skills, but are easy to control so they get a friggin' label. Sheesh!

Pretty mush all the stuff on the radio (besides classic rock, jazz, and classical) is garbage that can be summed up in about 3 or 4 chords, usually. Lame.

I can't stand Nirvana, Metallica (older is better), the new Red Hot Chili Peppers (better with old guitarist), Blink 182 (I've coined a term for groups like this: BRAT ROCK), and most other junk on the radio.

Sorry, I'd have a more current list of popular bands, but I haven't listened to the radio for a long time.

Heh, The Used. :bootyshake:

haha...that one made me LOL at work. The lady next to me asked "what's so funny." I just her told her musicians hating musicians. She gave me a nice hearty "ha". not a ha ha. just one single ha, which is even more funny that a ha ha.

anywho...

so this thread is about trendy music right - not so much bands we dislike just because....but because they are trendy (which includes talent-less music).

I am a metal junkie (now don't get me to specifics cause I will rip you a new one here. "Death metal" and "black metal" are two seperate styles - just fyi. Metallica, which I am not surprised in general, I thoroughly enjoy, except for one album (st. anger). I love Dream Theater, Joe Satriani, Ministry, and countless others. That's pure skill. No gimmicks there.

But I do think that one band that is changing the rock/pop genre is Muse. That band is killler awesome. wow.

anywho, Green Day I dislike. I don't like Calbrie, Kelly Clarkson, and Fergie (although she is good solo singer).

Speaking of The Used my dad taught that original bassist how to play.

I can't stand CREED. I'm happy as hell they dropped off the planet.

Growing up with real musicians I'm a hater of those that can't play also. A few cords here and there doesn't make you a musician, dumb ass people who don't know the difference do.

:frustrated:
I think my brain actually blocked my memory of hearing them as a self preservation effort. That's a good call.

This is a great thread! I have to admit I bought a Creed and limp biscuit CD years and years ago. Talk about garbage albums, yuck!

Only band I don't agree with with is ICP. Not my kind of music granted, but they are so unique, disturbed, and disgusting, I just have to love those guys. Of course everyones mileage may vary.

I defy anyone to listen to this song and not love these guys!

Because this board is a major niche group, similar interests across the board that are not shared by the majority of the population.

Here's my opinion. First thing, it's all subjective. What really makes a musician "talented" or not, successful or not? Is there clear consensus on what constitutes a "musician." Or a "talented" musician?

In photography, there are similar sentiments. I get asked frequently if I'm a "photographer," and usually, I respond that I "pretend." Since being a photographer usually denotes someone who does it for a living, or claiming it as a label denotes a certain level of accomplishment has been reached. Not sure if "musician" carries the same weight.

Likewise, lots of photographers love to measure photographs by technical qualities, i.e. is the image sharp, in focus, horizons straight, good composition, nice colors, well printed, etc.. If any of the "rules" are broken, you are a crappy photographer. Those types of "photographers" remind me of this discussion.

Then there are other photographers and art lovers who don't give too hoots about anything, and they shoot images that break every rule you could ever conceive, and then a few you can't. I look at them, and may think the image is a complete piece of garbage. Others will spend thousands of dollars on the print. Is that person a talentless photographer?

In most "arts," it's very tough to make a living. Perhaps, from a narrow perspective, these talentless musicians suck, and you think you are better than them, or they don't deserve their big fat contracts, or whatever. But the bottom line is musical talent is not what makes someone a prominent musician. Just like raw talent with a camera doesn't make a photographer prominent. What makes them good is all of the other things they do to make their music (or photography) seen or heard, combined by their personal vision. That takes business sense, perseverance, stubborness, vision, determination, luck, etc...

I mean, if so many talentless hacks are making millions in music, why aren't you? And if not, why the hate for those who do have the ears of the masses? Jealousy, perhaps? Or is it just that their vision of their music isn't the same as yours?

Y'all are a bunch of haters. :haha:

I gotta tell you, nine times out of ten, popularity and success for a musician mean they are a package job aimed at the lowest common denominator. 99% or pop, country, rock, metal, alternative, country, garage, etc, is complete excrement.

The other 99% is total brilliance.

I actually played more jazz/funk style back in the day and you rarely hear of these guys in the top 40 but when these 'big bands' get asked who their influences were they always go back to the artists you dont hear alot of.

The thing is, and I hate to admit it, some of that packaged crap for the lowest common denominator is actually total ear candy. I consider myself a fairly discerning listener, but sometimes ya just gotta admit - occasionally the crap purveyors spit out a gem.

All that being said, I still don't get hip-hop.

You know whats interesting is that all of our comments, besides Ice's last one about his "inch worm" :haha: , all seem to mimic each other. If there is such a hatred for all these bands, then how do they seem to be so popular?

I have this theory that all people are sheep and buy whatever is playing on the radio. They want someone to tell them what is popular and what they should like. Sadly my wife falls into this category. On several occaisons I have brought music to her that I thought she would like only to hear "not my style, not interested". Then on a couple occaisons it will get popular and start playing on the radio and she will say "hey can you download me this torrent please?" Same exact song!!
:frustrated:

Another instance, I was playing this obscure band called "Blasted Mechanism" in the garage while cleaning my car. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG7bHdE98lc She comes out and thinks I'm listening to the radio and says "hey that could be some good workout music, what's the name of that band". I had played the same exact video not 4 days earlier and she said "what a bunch of freaks, I would never listen to that garbage."

Oh, but once it's on the radio it's all good.... *sigh* I guess my point is that they cram stuff on the radio down your throat and that makes it popular, marketing.... not talent IMO.

I like HIM! I knew about the band years ago and couldn't get any music to buy. No one carried it. Seems you have to kiss up to the US record labels or have a label that is stationed here and sign in the US as well?
Band member of HIM actually dropped off a card with VIRGIN record in Vegas to get them to carry some tunes. HUH! good luck with that!Just try and download foreign music from the UK in Itunes. Won't happen unless it is licensed for sale over here. Don't know how it works. But, in keeping with the post,

Bands I hate are the ones that are "FORCE FED" to us by the record co. and directly into their radio stations. Next thing, it is a HIT!! OOOHH
We're supposed to love this band, now. Natasha Bedingfield with Unwritten. The only song the sations will play. Nothing else. NOw, a year later, it's already been sold as a cash whore to some hair shampoo company...Make hay whilst the sun shines and sell yourself out to the highest bidder. Artists, my rear!
