Go ahead and post the Great Wall. I created the thread and was going to post some pics of Chitzen Itza that I have. Plus the first set of pics I posted were not of Utah but Colorado.

This hogan was intact and some Navajo was using it back in 2002...this picture was taken in 2017 and it looks like he's pretty much abandon the place. This is up on Cummings Mesa. NO ONE is going up there anymore...I hiked up from West Canyon, spent the day up there and saw absolutely no sign of any people...no even on the "trail" coming up from the east. They used to herd sheep up there...there are at least 3 reasonably intact hogans and probably half a dozen more that have collapsed...the ones that were intact have stuff from the '70s in them. One of them was being used up until 2002, but not anymore.

Back in 2005 I did a backpack with a couple of long time friends to a place near Dark Canyon. 6 or 7 nights...along with us were a couple of folks that were friends of friends that I didn't know. Anyway, we got a little off track and sought shelter from the sun for a break in a small overhang...just an inconspicuous, out in the middle of nowhere thing. We had to climb up about 150 to get to it. Figured we'd take a little lunch break in there, check out the map. It was maybe big enough for 5-6 people to have a seat.

I get up there first and I see a potshard sticking out from the floor...I go to pick it up and it wouldn't budge...turns out to be a fully intact pot that was buried in sand. Been sitting there ever since whoever left it God knows how long ago. We used our hands to uncover it, take a few pictures and then I fully covered it back up and put a flat rock over the top of it. I was just there for the first time since that discovery just about a month ago...I was curious to see if it was still there as the 2 people I didn't know were fully freaking out on the find...I mean really freaking out...I suspected one of them might come back and take it home.

It's still there, just like we left it...still had the rock on top. My fear that one of them might make there way back here to get it was probably invalid...especially since they had no real idea of where we were and finding that little alcove again would be a needle in a haystack...but I know right where it is...only about a half hour walk from where I parked my camper. Don't bother asking...I won't tell.

/\/\/\...is this Beef Basin? Of all the places I've been in Utah over the last 35 years, I've never driven down that road...been all over the place east and west of it, though. Now that I have this camper that's on my list to visit for a week or so. I picked up a hitchhiker just outside of Escalante recently...he was doing the Hayduke Trail and just resupplied in town...wanted a lift about 10 miles east to get back on the trail.

I asked him..."So what's been the best part so far?" He said "Ruin Canyon". I know that's near Beef Basin (I've been all over the Sweet Alice Hills but never down in the valley). He told me there were ruins everywhere as he traveled thru that area. I told him I always figured that area would be a bit dull but he insisted it's actually very nice.

Yeah Beef Basin, quite a high number of points of interest in there actually, most not much more than wall foundations and depressions with scattered remnants. That second trip when I took these photos was all about the visible ones easier to spot along the loop. In six or seven trips through or around the basin now I know I've just scratched the surface so to speak. Ruin c. has the tallest still freestanding structure I've seen in that general area on a nice ridgetop site.

While I despise the snobs that try to keep canyons "secret" or ridicule those that "spray beta" on such things...I see it differently with ruins and other ancient stuff. There is nothing more satisfying than exploring an area and finding a ruin or other artifacts that you didn't know were there. Except for the ones that are obvious or well know, I won't tell where they are, either.

And I'll tell you why...theft and vandalism. I've seen it with my own eyes...the top of the water pocket fold near the southern end. The Anazasi and Navajo were thick up there, not so much with dwellings but hunting. Their camps can be found, the places they sat and made tools, rock art here and there, etc...

When Steve Allan published his route book on the area around the mid nineties I witnessed the aftermath...dug up sites and whole areas of toolmaking being picked clean. While I think that what's lying on the surface is just a fraction of what's buried in the sand, it's still distressing to see and I feel sorry for those that will walk right thru an area that kept myself and friends occupied for two hours with our eyes pointed at the ground.

While I think the fire thing was probably figured really early on, you would think they would have figured how to secure a bundle of anything before that...like transporting something numerous back to a cave/shelter/campsite. Virtually everything I've found has been off the beaten path...like getting up in the morning and going in the opposite direction that everyone else is going. I don't think there are any large structures that remain unfound...but there certainly are granaries and campsites that hadn't seen a visitor in a thousand years before I got there. I've met some guys that are also hardy hikers/backpackers who also have found undisturbed sites...and when they told me where they were I thought, "Well now, you're an explorer, aren't you?".

Nooks and crannies....it's all about those nooks and crannies that you would think no one would bother climbing up to...but those Indians were everywhere. You gotta be a strong hiker and prepared to go all day without finding a damn thing, but you don't stop. It could take several weeks of hiking just to find a few sites.

Just considering potsherds in particular; there are a lot less than there used to be that is for sure, but still that is all depending on where you go. Some of the off the radar sites I've been to were surprisingly sterile, yet a very few of the known sites still have a ton of potsherds lying around, though those require backpacking to get to. I've heard that archaeologists will collect all of the surface potsherds at accessible or well known sites, perhaps in problem areas.

I actually do like exploring. I would love to go on a walkabout for a few days with a camera. Problem is, I'm the only weirdo in my family that way. I think when my son is back from his church mission in Africa we will hit the desert the winter of 2023. I actually do like exploring. I would love to go on a walkabout for a few days with a camera. A place like Cedar Mesa is good. Of course there are the ruins that everyone goes there to see...but just wander around a bit and there's more than meets the eye. Most of the stuff you'll stumble onto can be rather "small"...but interesting nonetheless.

Also...there are things to be found that are, um..."adjacent" to the so called well known areas. Kinda like..."I wonder if they went over/up there, too?". In many cases...yes, they did.

Let me know when you're ready to hike. Not all the good stuff requires multi day backpacks. There's one area in particular we can camp for a few days that you and your son will love...it's far from the beaten path, seriously quiet and just a wonderful place to get away from it all with lots too see. Here's a picture of the area...I was just there for a whole week last April.

have you noticed a proliferation of Wildernness Study Areas and Instant Study Areas in the last decade (or two). Which means no vehicle camping (or access). Two of our fave camping locations in the Cedar Mesa outback are just barely legal.You bet I've noticed it...and I'm a bit concerned.

About 10 years ago, I began to notice more and more people camping off the beaten track. Tent campers, but lots of vehicles of all different configurations. It all seems to be getting smaller now. The bummer is the trash and destruction...shit and toilet paper all over the place. It's getting really bad around Moab, especially north of town in the Willow Springs, Dalton Springs and Klondike areas. In fact, the authorities are already making moves to stop or severely limit "dispersed" camping. I think Cedar Mesa may be next and I wouldn't be surprised if they start putting restrictions on the Hole in the Rock road. The Swell has RVs all over the place and Gooseberry Mesa is not so slowly being destroyed...I'm amazed at how much impact has occurred in just 6 years up there...people are just plowing into the bushes to camp and burning up anything they can find.

I'm sure the day will come that just driving down a dirt road to camp for free on BLM, National Forest, etc...will be a thing of the past. There are websites where people are showing places to camp for free and while most are just some place off the side of the road, some of the "remote" or "secret" places I've discovered over the last 35 years are showing up, too.

Also how Jailhouse Ruin gets it's name interestingly enough...
But this is the interior of a Kiva. Here we are seeing the remains of the inner wall and hard to say if that keyway was a back door or opening to an anteroom, storage, or just broken down. The "window" is just broken wall revealing it's interior showing that wood was used in construction, just as in the case of the Jailhouse Ruin.
Kivas come in many slightly differing configurations and depending on the size some features may be more or less exaggerated. They are usually round, more rarely square or D shaped, but many of them will have some kind of bench or shelf arrangement around the outer wall. It is thought that specific construction techniques such as support pillars and ventilator shaft design may point to particular influencing major settlements such as Chaco Canyon or Mesa Verde. Kiva's generally do not have windows or a door in a traditional sense to the outside, they were typically accessed through the roof with a ladder. This one, though not much is left, is more interesting than most in the area with it's mudded walls and neatly done beam supported nook like shelves/benches.

I’ll be home from a month long road trip soon and I’ve got quite a few shots of some nice, very isolated ruins that I’ll post up. I’ve also been reading quite a bit about the history of pre and post Colombian tribes in the southwest and northern Mexico...history that was written 150 years ago from the Indians themselves. Powell is a good recourse for that...that guy really got around. I’m convinced it was a mega drought that leveled them...along with the chaos that it wrought, of course.

It's worth the hike...it's a very nice ruin. Has a structure similar to the Doll House. Beautiful canyon, too.

This was my third hike into the canyon but the first to visit the ruin. The first time was in the late 90s and I couldn't find the ruin as I went a little too far up the side canyon it's in. The second time was a hike with friends from to top down to the Cream Pots and none of my friends wanted to go look for it. This time however, I found it right away. It's about 500 feet up on the wall from the creek.

Kelsey says it's "very well preserved and very well hidden"...while I agree with the preserved part, when you know where it is you can actually see it from the bottom of the canyon. Forget his description of how to get there, as it's a bit off. Here's what you do...

Coming down canyon, after you pass "twin falls" (you can't miss it) you'll suddenly be walking along a slick rock stream that is about 300 yards long. Nearly at the end is where the side canyon comes in (the best part of the whole hike, BTW)....DO NOT GO UP THE SIDE CANYON. Right after you pass it, you'll pick the trail back up on stream left and you'll see a very faint but quite noticeable trail shooting off to the left...take it and go up with it. It is certainly the way the Indians came up and down. You'll be at the ruin in about 20 minutes...about halfway up look to your left and you'll see it.

You can actually see it from the confluence of the main canyon and the side canyon. Like I said, great hike...here's a shot of the tower straight across from the ruin. I've got to figure out how to make my pictures really big like you do...got a solution to that?

I also use flickr to host all my newer albums, there are many size options, the process is a little easier, they provide the link in bb code for example letting you just paste the generated link right into the post.

I find things like this by simply going in a direction that no one else is going. Terrain that looks like it would hold no interest, but it does. They built some of these things in places that make you wonder why...no where near water or farmland or any habitation structures. My best guess is that it was to cache food for hunters?

Big cattle companies virtually owned the entirety of the Blue Mountains for decades...Beef Basin, Sweet Alice Hills especially. Water is a problem in the area so there's a lot of stock tanks and they tapped into every spring available. If you can find it, read the book "My Canyonlands" by Kent Frost. He grew up in the area about 100 years ago and really got around.
