I have switched to a dual boot of Windows and Ubuntu. I am trying to make the full switch to Ubuntu. Is there anyone else here using Ubuntu?

We tried it, it's neat, won't replace my XP workstation.

I don't know if people on this site know how in to Open Source I am, but I love linux for the the desire to make a better product for everyone. Ubuntu is really cool and it has some nice graphical features. I do believe Ubuntu is likely to replace Windows for a lot of people one day (especailly as Windows emulators like WINe getting improve, and more developers keep it in mind as they develop source code).

The best article I have read about Ubuntu basically said that Ubuntu will be ready to replace Windows, when my Grandmother can run it on her own without any trouble. (Just pointing out that as good as it is, it is far from simple or ready for the beginning user).

I have been using Windows for 20 years, so it is hard to switch to Ubuntu. Some days I hate it right now and some days I love it.

Oh don't get me wrong, Ubuntu is probably one of the best Linux GUIs out there. I run about 10 Linux servers at work and I love Linux. But I wouldn't replace Linux on my desktop yet. I love it on the server side.

The main problem for me is that I play video games. How is it for that? i would love to find a low resource GUI that could run the latest video games, automatically update my drivers, surf the net, and nothing else.

I've seen Ubuntu running on a couple peoples machines here at work, but not really played with it yet.

It depends on your machine. Linux has programs like wine (Windows Emulator) that will play most any windows program (photoshop CS2, MS office, IE7, games, etc.) but it does require more processing.

The main reason I have installed Linux and am trying to make the complete switch is because of the success of Linux servers and my need to familiarize myself with Linux for work.

I don't fully get it yet, but thankfully I don't have a quality job yet that would require it :).

DiscGo, you can run a linux server at home and do pretty much whatever you want on it. Run WWW, DNS, FTP, SSH, SMTP, mySQL, PHP, Java, the list goes on. That's how I started my Linux career back in the day. Ran a clan website for Everquest game and wanted to configure the first release of showEQ (if you know what it is, you are awesome). Then I started running my own DNS and mail servers at home, then got into security on linux.

Alex- Thanks for the heads up. Most of what I know about networking, I have learned through setting up, and streaming xboxes. It sure is great when hobbies can lead to providing for you.

I never got in to Everquest because when I was at the store to buy it when I was 18, I was warned by everyone around me not to buy it, unless I was prepared to only play that from then on because it was "so addictive". My self-control sucks, so I just opted not to start.

Anyway, my bandwidth isn't great here but I have an extra computer. Maybe I'll mess around with it and make Wolfenstein server or something. Thanks again for the suggestion.

You really don't need much of bandwidth at all. You can connect to everything locally from your home computers. You can setup a Samba and run a file server from your Linux box. There are endless possibilities how you could use a Linux in the educational environment.

Don't forget about VMware, you can download the server vnware for free from their website. Just have to request a free server license (right on their site). Then you can run all your stuff from a single computer.

VMware + Linux is in high demand job wise now.

And good choice on Evercrack :2thumbs:
