When is it this year? I want in. Bring on the n00bf3s7.
Oh, and can you completely work around my schedule? :haha:
But seriously, I really want to make it this year. My knees are refreshed.
Is Spring a possibility, or does Fall work best?

Time of year depends on where you want to hold the fest. Rockgremlin is the guy who usually headed up the canyon noob fests in the past. Not sure how that is going to work with his recent relocation.
Post your ideas.....

And a little FYI to canyoneers..... Tom recently posted that he will not be holding any Tom Canyon Festivals this year. So if some of you want in on a fest you might need to pick up the slack and help with some planning and organization.

Spring or Fall can work. March and April could both be good, as long as you don't mind nights that are still a little bit cold.

I'd rather not do it as "Dan Ransom Photography" But, I'll happily do it as "Dan." In fact, I have a couple possibly in the works. Bogleys beware though, as Shane has already eloquently explained, "my skillset isn't adequate."
On a serious note, I'll be happy to help out where I can. Perhaps a good starting point is figuring out when people want to do it.
Welcome to the forum, engaging first post.
If my wife did allow me to go I would like to do a canyon with some natural anchor building so I could see how the pros do it.
Where should we go? I think somewhere without permits like roost/swell area. Kindof in the middle. I vote sometime in March/April mabey even may if its not too hot then.
Edit: I am also down with Dan as the trip planner/leader

Couple of thoughts I've been kicking around.... not saying any of them will actually happen, but then again, if there is enough interest it just might....
A Couple's Fest, this would be more upscale, rooms at a descent motel, dinner and drinks at nice restaurants, easier canyons. This would be a great time for canyoneers to drag their significant other kicking and screaming into the sport. Probably stage out of Moab or Springdale.
A Family Fest, some easier tech canyons with short raps that are kid friendly.... thinking of gearing for kids about 5 and up... could hold this several different places. Big campfire in the evening... North Wash area might make a descent base. Hold a big dinner and a DI Formal. We've done the DI formal thing before and it's a hoot.
I have a couple other ideas.... if any of this sparks an interest speak up....
:kickit:
Couples and family thing would be fun. It's also fun without kids and wife so I'm good either way.

I would also like to join the fun. Would suggest the Swell, North Wash, Robber's Roost, area's if done in March/April timeframe. Maybe even the Cedar Mesa area. If you need help in planning let me know.

What about another UUtah Zion trip? Maybe some canyon with a little more meat? I'm willing to help out and plan as needed since it's my neck of the woods. I'm thinking May, 3-4 day's over the weekend. I wouldn't mind getting back into Kolob or Imlay. Maybe ,boundary, or if we end up with a newer crowd i'm game for some 'easier' canyons.

Sounds kinda fun, but I see May in Zion being a little dicey this year. Too early to tell, but it might be a short season in Z, with all this snow.

Regarding Mexico, we were starting to look into it, but I think we are going to do it every other year. We intially only had about 4 peope who wanted to go. I'm game to go and I know Cody is game to go again. We'd need about another 5-6 to really have a good group. I'm willing to go again this year if we can round up enough people, but i feel since i was there last year that the canyons are an every other year experience. Cody and I will organize if their are people interested.

Moab is the most asked for addition to my website.
I like the Moab Canyons, YMMV.
I like the night life in Moab.
There are good resturants in Moab.
Rooms are really cheap in Moab right now so I don't have to pack anything or sleep in the dirt, that makes the trip easy.
I have some reliable Moab beta that I'd like to try out.
I haven't spent a major amount of time in Moab so it's newer to me.
Rockgremlin used to live down that way and I liked doing canyons with him. (he has since moved).
It's only 3.25 hours from my house
Seems there are a lot more bang for the buck canyons in North Wash and the Roost
As for the bang for buck.... Yes and No... depends on who you are and what you have done.
I'm kinda burned out on North Wash and the Roost.
I've done most of the good stuff in North Wash and Roost. Still a lot to do in the Roost but most of what I have left involves some type of major riff-raff.
I'm not a big fan of repeating most routes.
yada... yada....
As you can see.... my current interest in Moab is mostly personal and/or selfish. Not that there is anything wrong with that. :haha:

BTW, hotel rates are up again. Next week is the half marathon, and they will no longer be as cheap as before. I'd say like $60 a night. In winter, it is $35. YMMV.

02-25-2008, 04:26 PM
A lot to that.... at least in winter months with short daylight hours.... I'm not really a big fan of sitting around the campfire when it gets dark and waiting 6 hours until I get tired and go to bed... Heck, I have places to go, people to see, things to do.

If you haven't ever been to moab during the car show you should go. It is amazing to see all the cars and activities going on in town. Plus most of the people are there for the car show and not out playing in the rocks. So you get the best of both worlds. Entertainment in town and not to many people out playing. Stay away during the safari, that has just gotten out of control. To many kids for spring break etc. But to get rooms for car show have to reserve a year in advance.

Aye, matey. And those bigger than your former self have been "through":
"When Tom took me "through" Leprechaun this weekend, he assured me I was just the second largest person to do it. And while Ryan seems to have a couple inches in height on me, your numbers would seem to indicate that my superior beer belly and greater heft would make me larger in the one dimension that seems to matter in this shamefully cruel, discriminatory, micro slot.
"Yes, Tom Jones, weighing in at a trim 180, known as "he of little weight, sense, or mercy," led the way. Paul Schmidt, a more reasonable 190 pounds, had his moments in his trip through his first tight slot. And me? Well, let's just say I brought our average group weight up to 210. And I did go through some of the wider spots. The rest of the grim ordeal one could think of me more as the high altitude reconnaissance unit. "

It's where we go to watch the Bogley boys get wild and do R-rated things for us. I don't think canyons are required... just beer and a party attitude.....
There is also the same sort of get-together at the ACA Canyoneering Thing in Zion this month: March 27th to 30th.
Thanks for the info. Sounds like a lot of fun!! I'll keep my eye on the board for a final decision about when and where. So in other words, it sounds like a big desert party. :) I'm down for that too!! A canyon here or there would nice too.

Bogley Fest's are just a bunch of folks getting together, doing canyons and camping. We did the Black Hole last summer and invited anyone who wanted to go... including noob's with no experience, which is where the noobfest tag came from.... it was a popular event and a lot of novice were introduced to canyoneering by more experienced mentors. The year before last we held a noobfest in Cedar Mesa and did Cheesebox and North Wash canyons. Rockgremlin is/was the force behind the noobfests.
The Bogley group has also held other fests where someone semi-organizes a get-to-gather and puts out a general invite in this forum (we had a couple big gigs in Moab last year and a nice one in Zion). The Bogley invite usually states a few rules like what type of Experience level is expected and such. The Bogley events have always been free to anyone and are really just friends getting together with friends. Anyone is welcome to put together a fest and use the Bogley forum to organize it.
There are also several other organizations who put together different get-to-gathers under different names and with different rules. Tanya mentioned the ACA, which put's on what they call a Rendezvous. The ACA charges a fee ($65 plus lodging last I heard, and I believe requires membership). The ACA events are much larger (over 100 last event?) and a lot more structured then a Bogley event.
Anyhoo.... that's the general drift....

Since this thread is still going... Not sure if anyone on here really cares, but I won't be able to help with this until the fall now. My free time is booked until I leave for the great white north. March was the time, but it kinda slinked by in a hurry.
I believe AJ has a n00bfest in April, but from what I understand, it is already booked full. So I'm not sure who is still standing that can help put this together. Looks like Ice and Rock maybe? (again?) I was hoping we could get something together sooner. Maybe in the fall... :2thumbs:

Sounds like Maidenwater is right up your alley. Long canyon, lots and lots of short and interesting downclimbs. Some could be considered rappels depending on your skill level.
So which weekend in May? The choices are:
1st weekend (May 3rd

You can sign me up.
I don't mind "leading" but I'm not going to claim I have the experience to be in charge of peoples well being. As far as leading goes I am pretty good at organizing things. I have never built a natural anchor. That is one thing I was hoping to learn on this trip.
I am willing to teach people the little that I know. I would be comfortable going down the canyon with people following me if that is ok as a leader.
Here is a list of my canyons. All of them done in 2007. I just started canyoneering last year, pretty easy canyons:
Mainfork of BlueJohn out horseshoe canyon
Mystery
Pine Creek
Keyhole x2
Spry
Blackhole
Fry canyon
Midieval chamber
Teirdrop

I'm kind of in the same boat as Jaxx, I don't mind "leading" but I'm not going to claim I have the experience to be in charge of peoples well being. I've attended an ACA anchor workshop, skills practice day and canyon descent with Rich and I plan on taking a 3 day technical course by June. So I'd be happy to contribute my experience, what little it is, and some gear.
Here is my list of canyons, all done in 2007:
Yankee Doodle x3
Pine Creek x3
Keyhole
Mystery
Spry
Subway
Birch Hollow
Orderville
Fry
White Roost (both Forks)

Places:
Capitol Reef is a good place for noobs because the canyons there aren't highly technical (except Pandora's Box). Only problem is the hikes are a pain in the @$$ to get into. Either you set up a two hour car shuttle (which may or may not be possible to do anymore given new regs), or you hike the equivalent to the Moroni Slope/Squeeze slog uphill.
It might be easier to do something in the Swell, Roost or Zion, but Zion is an 8-hour drive for me. It's up to you guys. If you're going, sound off here WHERE you want it to be out of these three areas:
1. Swell
2. Roost
3. Zion
I'll respect the group's decision.

I know Bo would love to go to this and if in Zion it would be a for sure thing. I bet he would. Also....
Consider my favorite canyons there do not need permits....
Birch Hollow, Fat Man's Misery, Red Cave --- although you don't need a rope a big group could have a blast in there....
...and I bet there are a couple that Bo knows of that Shane has not done yet that also don't need permits.

Just get your permits now for Zion if that's the plan, I think it only costs something like $5 to reserve your permits on line. You are stuck following the rules and group size limits just like everyone else.

I called on my rental house ---- It is rented right before and after that weekend..... we could use it but it would not be cleaned since people are checking out at 11am on Friday, which should be okay for a freebee..... and then I just have to have it cleaned by Monday morning (it takes a few hours) because it's rented. That way no one would have to pay for hotel rooms. If doing Fat Man's Misery its right near where we could set up a shuttle ----- which would at least be something a little different for Shane doing it that way.... so he could add a little something to his website. It's also closer to the canyons that start along the North Fork Road.
House -
There are 4 beds in the main house. I am not sure I want to open up the whole thing though because that's a lot of beds and cleaning for me to do on Sunday night, but if I did it opens up 4 more beds.

So if you guys want the house you need to get Ice to go. :haha:
Wow that is really kind of you to offer that! Thanks! I think that if we used the house it should be with the understanding that we would atleast help you clean it if not clean it for you. Is there a lawn we could just throw out some sleeping bags and not worry about going inside.

I'm a maybe. I would step up with a date and lead an easy canyon but (straight forward anchors). . . Still looking for a dam job and need one fast. :frustrated: So my schedule changes day to day. :wallbash:
Call in sick! Shane and I can't do that though -- we both have to cover when others call in sick.

Solid -- and ONLY if Tanya shows up!!! Otherwise no show.
I am assuming this is the color of his banana hammock that he will be wearing while leading the group? :lol8: If so, I have to rock the vote and go with animal print. Preferably hot pink and black zebra print.
She has not seen THE picture. :lol8:

I'm still in. That ain't nothing! HAHA!! You guys are f'ing hysterical. My kinda crowd. :2thumbs:
BTW.....the more ball sacks, the merrier. :roflol: :roflol: :roflol:
Also add me to the "maybe" column. Although, I must apologize that I can't sign up to help organize (already too much going on right now.) As far as going to and in the canyons, I'm more than happy to help others and make/verify anchors.
I'm less likely to attend if it's in Zion (Zion is around a 11-12 hour drive for me.) No worries if that's where you end up though, as it sounds like there are plenty of experienced folks leaning towards the Zion side. The main issue I see with that is just working the permit system... I definitely agree that if Zion becomes the plan, you should reserve the canyons online ASAP. Many of the popular ones are likely already gone...
The only way I'd do Zion is if I could take the entire week off, and do both weekends and the full week (which might be possible)... Not worth that long of a drive to me otherwise...
Take care,
A.J.

Wow that is really kind of you to offer that! Thanks! I think that if we used the house it should be with the understanding that we would atleast help you clean it if not clean it for you. Is there a lawn we could just throw out some sleeping bags and not worry about going inside.
Dang! Sorry about that.... I thought I deleted that in time for anyone to see it ... we probably can't use it. The desk called me back and it seems the people renting it are not checking out until Saturday. I will see what I can do but for now let's not count on this one.

Ya, we'll need another experienced guy to sign up to assist in the leading...unless Tanya and/or Felicia is a sure thing.
Alex could probably assist to some extent too.
And finally the trip begins to shift to the holy land. If we end up with another Bogley fest in Zion you can count me in. I'm more than willing to lead and help put it all together as needed. June 7th works well for me too. Looks to be another fun time.

Since 3 people can't go unless Zion, only makes sense to do it there. Would it be hard to get permits for a big group in Zion? Can we pressure Bo to use his privilege on this one? :ne_nau:
As you already know permits will be tough but there is plenty outside of the park that we could do and if we decide we need more permits for something in the park; Jason will surely go and wait in line for us at 3:30 in the morning again.

Nope, it takes me around 4 hours and two mountain passes to get me near Alison's. If it definitely looks like Zion, I'm going to see what I can line up for going for 10 days... Another run down Heaps and Imlay is always a good thing! I'll watch how the event develops and will work on some of my own team and permits when I get the time...
Hope I get a chance to get it all together; would be great to meet everyone. (I'm just a little concerned as I've got a 2 week trip starting end of June, and many in between as well as a lot going on with work right now... Yeah, I know, cry me a river.)
BTW, if I come, I'm bringing my ball sack too. I'm sure many will be happy to know. Those pictures are just scary though...

Zion it is! Awesome~
Question: I've never been to Zion. Coming from Colorado, should I exit Seiver off of I-70 and take Hwy 89 in? Or should I take the 70-15 route? Didn't know if one is more scenic than the other? I've driven the 15 to Calif several times, just looking for something different this time. :blahblah:

Permit Experts
What is the process for others that want to apply for permits. I know there is an online way to do it, but don't they have to go and take some class first?
What is our best bet right now to get more permits other than what you can get?
Getting Das Boot and the Subway would be cool. We could do the Russel Gulch entry so they can get in 3 - 100' rappels too! -- then all the fun downclimbs in Das Boot and the beauty of the Subway. Then of course the delightful uphill hike out. -- or if there is not enough permits some can do Russel Gulch, some Das Boot and all meet in the Subway?

Shane, you HAVE to come!!!! I don't see how it can be a "true" bogleyFest without "certain" players.
I'd like to do Das Boot & Subway, but the lottery isn't running for June yet!
I would need a navigator for this one, as I can't be trusted
to read, draw or follow a map.
I have ropes & know how to use them for what its worth, so I am "good' for something!
Canyons I could lead without navigational help
would be Keyhole & Pine Creek....
Anyone have an interest in those canyons?
We could do both in one day.
What about hidden from the top?
Anyone interested in that one?
I've hiked up from the bottom and it's really beautiful, but I've not done it from the top.
Or I could "help" out on anything really.

So we gotta get our own permits or wtf. Is Bo getting them or are we doing a canyon where you don't need them? Page 16 coming up. . .
I think we need to firm up the number of people coming and then decide on which canyons and when. So far i've heard Birch, Misery, Yankee, and Red Hollow. Lets say we end up with 24 people, we could split into two groups swapping canyons on the two days. One group of twelve does Birch while the other does Misery or whatever then the groups swap for the next day.
If we end up with groups larger than 6 we're going to mostly be forced out of permit canyons. What about several groups of six? There are going to be a few who have never been here before who are going to want to hit Das Boot, Pine, and Keyhole. While others will want something a bit more meatier. A possible suggestion;
-One group of 6-12 hits Keyhole and Pine on Saturday and a non permit canyon on Sunday, like Birch or Misery.
-Another group of 6 hits Das Boot, swaps and does something else on Sunday, maybe Rock Canyon.
-Another group of six hits Boundary or something of heartier fare one day, something else on Sunday.
I think the groups would naturally get mixed on the two days with this many people coming. There will also be plently of socializing in the evenings.
We could also set it up like Tom has in the past with his fests. Each leader posts which canyons he plans on doing, arranges permits, then others 'sign up' for that leader on that day. This way we may be able to satisfy all of the diferent needs of 24 people.
My two cents. I'm just looking to spend some time with good friends again.

i just checked and there are plenty of on line permits available for canyons on the 7th and 8th. Looks like somebody snagged a bunch for Pine on the 8th but there is still a ton left for Saturday. Spry, Behunin, Telephone, Englestead, and Das Boot all have 6 or more permits available on line for the 7th and 8th.
All of those above I feel are fine for noobs who have at least done a few canyons before, all pretty straightforward, except for maybe the 300 footer on Englestead. I also like Rock quite a bit. Just thinking out loud here but we could send a dozen down Misery and a dozen down Rock and all meet at French for the easy Misery hike out and avoid that slog out the other way.
Could do the same thing with Englestead and Birch. Send six down Englstead and a dozen or so down Birch and meet in Orderville for th hike out the bottom.
Has anybody looked into a group campsite? some sort of gathering place?

24 newbies to Heaps! LOL :roflol:
My first trip through Heaps was with a youngster that had done Mystery with me a few weeks earlier, and his boss that I took out and taught to rappel the day before the trip! :ne_nau:
My 3rd trip through was with a former employee and 4 other friends. Curt stood 5'10" and weighed in at 320# :ne_nau:
Whats to say that 27 of us couldn't get through that skinny canyon and enjoy pizza and (root) beer afterwards? :haha:

Amazing what Booze can do! :lol8: My stories keep getting better...No actually, I do love Heaps Canyon, but it's been a few years and Tanya and I plan on doing a "Photo Trip" through Heaps this year. I really hope it works out so that we can see the best collection of photos ever done in this remote canyon! :2thumbs:

I have wanted to do Rock for a long time. :2thumbs: I'd do it this trip or set up a trip some other time too. :2thumbs: No permit either.
Tanya I was also thinking if we needed another canyon we could do Water Canyon. I know it is easy, but no permits and this is noobfest so easy is ok.

OK, so we've got the date and area nailed down. This thread is getting really long (16+ pages), so how about I create another thread with just the details?
The moderators can edit the participant list as it updates, as well as the canyons.
Here is the Noobfest Summary Thread:
