Actually, I've created 100 different usernames, and they're all me. I've logged on using 100 different computers at the schools, and let them run all day.

Maybe Acca or Beech can track what thread is responsible for the surge. It's usually caused when one of the major sites or blogs link's to a thread on Bogley. :2thumbs:

last time Bogley got hit with a big surge like this the forum picked up several great new members.

I don't think those are real people.. just bots as said above. Most real people would join and have ids if they actually had interest in the group.

You'd be surprised how many are actual people. There are still a few popular threads linked to different sites, bouncing around the webz. I can see exactly which sites are referring to us through Google Analytics.

In fact, I just activated 3 more users today. The next mod will show the newest ACTIVE member at the bottom, rather than just the newest member, who are usually spammers. This will give us an idea of how many actual people are joining, which on average, is around 10 per week.

They just don't post, but they're not spammers. We've done a few things, so when they are activated, they'll click on the link, and it will bring them to the Newbies section to encourage an introduction. Some of them just won't do it though.

When you see large spikes like +100 in one day that's because a link showed up on a popular website or blog.

I'm also willing to bet the number of those who actually register is less then 5% of those who surf into the website. Most folks don't actually register until they decide to post something.

I was actually guessing around 2% of our visitors actually join. There are many return visitors that use us as a good outdoor reference, but never end up joining.

We'd love to hear from these people, but we don't want to be jerks by cutting off visitor access just to make them join, so we're thinking of limited access options. Maybe letting them only have access to 5 topics before it prompts a login, but if that stops them from visiting the site, that would be bad.

I guess no matter how great the site is, some people just won't join if they don't have the need.
