Anyone using a good cheap (or better yet, FREE) program that lets you copy the stuff you put on an iPod back to your hard drive (Windows XP)?

Now I'll climb up on my soapbox.... this is just more Apple bullshit.... it pisses me off that Apple stops you from copying both ways without using 3rd party software.....

Got it to work on XP computer. Had to install .net framework that the website above mentioned. I keep the .net program on my Ipod and this plus SharePod is only 26Mb.

A buddy at work uses Anapod Explorer.

Anapod Explorer offers iPod management through full Windows Explorer integration under My Computer, easy drag and drop iPod transfer and iPod backup, PDA function support, photo and video transfer, web page interface access to your iPod through a built-in web server, powerful search and reporting capabilities using a built-in SQL database, and much more, all in one compact package. A great backup tool or iTunes alternative. Version 8.9.9 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, and bug fixes.

Software that integrates your iPod into Windows the way it should have been

:lol8:

In an ideal world someone would create a hack that I could shove up Apples ass..... err... I mean create a patch for iTunes so I could just drag and drop in reverse.

I hate Apple and their bullshit.... so ya'll might be wondering what the deal is..... I bought the kids MP3 players for Christmas.... and just so they could be cool at school I bought iPods so they wouldn't get beat up by all the other cool kids for not being cool.....

And being the awesome dad that I am, I thought it best if I load the iPods with some vids and music so they can actually play with damn things on Christmas morning. Now the iPod itself is a pretty cool little gadget..... but it only took me about 5 minutes of playing with it to notice the firmware and software had been crippled to the point only a fanboi could love it..... Apple blows......

Currently I'm thinking SharePod has the best solution I've seen.... it's a big advantage to have the hack right on the ipod so you can drag and drop in both directions. Anyone else with suggestions or software I need to look at? I'm a beginner at dealing with this Apple bullshit....

Rockbox is open source firmware for DAPs that Ihave running it on my Toshiba Gigabeat.
No DRM, everything is drag and drop, add ons are sweet, I can now play video when I could only do photos before, its just perfect.
The only problem with Ipods is that they have some propriatairy hardware that drains the battery when the player is powered off (rockbox guys are working on it). But the short of it is... if you install it your IPOD you are only going to get half your battery life .

Good to see that you "saw the light" Iceaxe. Teaching your kids kids about the church of Apple is the very admirable. :haha:

The SharePod program appears to be just about everything I hoped for. Best part is the software is only 1.5 mb and is carried right on the iPod so I can swap with any computer.

Note to James or anyone else using SharePod:
Most my computers run XP Pro and they all had .net framework already installed. But I added a TXT file inside the SharePod folder with the web address to the program. This means I didn't have to carry the 20 mb patch on the iPod, but it is easy to get to if I ever need it.

Yeah like I said my new Vista computer already had it on there. The computers here are as stripped down as possible. For me 20Mb out of 8Gb is not that big of a deal.

I am glad it is working for you.
