"nuther" canyon

My wife and I found this canyon last week, I had been eyeing it for several months. We hiked the rim and dropped down where we could to check out the rappels, counted 5-6.
Rich and I did this canyon yesterday, it's not spectacular but the raps are from 20'-80'. Access is easy. Canyon can be done in 1 1/2-2 hrs.
There was no sign of previous descent so as usual we'll claim that honor until notified differantly.

Looks like a fun little canyon. Anything with a few rappels would be nice to get in for some practice now and then. The short ones are fun for the colder, shorter days of winter. Especially if there is no water in them. Thanks for the pics.

Cool. Interesting-looking rock. You giving away the location, or just being a tease???

I would never tease--
If you take the New Harmony exit and proceed towards Kannaraville on 89(north)You will see a cell tower to the east and a road leading up to it.
I did not take any gps quards but this canyon is south of the road to the cell tower(this road is a little rough). Let me see if I can pull up coords on topo USA. :rockon:

These are not exact as my mapping program does not show the road to the cell tower but I think they will get you close. The canyons name is locust on my maps

remember--not exact coords but the best I can do with what I have.

way to far east, I tried to get a closer view on your google map but the canyon doesn't show up well. The bottom section is visible from the freeway.

on my google earth it shows the parking area we used at-N37 29.05 w113 12.42
We hiked approx, 1/4 mile up a ridge due east then dropped into the canyon from the ridgetop due south,hope that helps

Interesting-looking rock.

Limestone of diverse quality. Some places very solid and homogenous. Other places very fragmented. Most anchors were trees

Thanks for sharing Kurt. I've been curious about some of those systems a few times and wondered if there was anything there. Looks like an interesting rock type.

This is really not a destination type canyon but rather a good one to burn 2hrs on your trip up or down the freeway.

It is however on my top 10 list of technical canyons in Iron county! :lol8:

yea thats it Dan, if you see where the road is closest to the canyon, that is roughley where we parked. Half of your canyon route in red is the tech section(lower half)

I have it my Google Earth file but haven't done it....yet... ;)

Speaking of that area...have you explored that canyon directly south of this one? I scouted out a bunch of those minor drainages with my drone last year and coming across a few dry falls and fun looking downclimbs; but didn't actually confirm by hiking up it. Edit: Its the one that ends at that water tower.

Yes, we have done 3 others south of this one, entered from upper parking lot Kolob.

Left other at VC for shuttle.

Best is the Southern most canyon, not as obvious from below but more bang for the buck.

Nice! I figured as much. Like you said, not destination canyons...but....variety is good.

Nuther is pretty fun but a bit of loose rock on some rappels makes one pay attention.

Some fun anchor problems in them all, none require bolts.

I used a 300' rope on 2 below Kolob but believe a 200' would reach, but I'm old so go prepared.
