was ni teh mojave national preserve over teh weekend and it is mating season for tarantulas. the men are on teh prowl so they can mate once and die. seems kinda unfair... once ? think i'd do w/out. tough call at any rate. saw a big red one in a burrow for a second before head and legs tucked back in. hiked from hole in the rock to mid hills. very nice. the real spider action was on the drive out though. once it hit dusk they were every minute along the roads. just kept a sharp eye out and saw bunches. mostly samll, but one was as big as 2 quarters. they act all tough but can easily be coaxed (shooed) onto teh hand. my friend said she had played w/ a bunch of them the day before. one crawled up her boot onto her ankle while we were there and she immediately screamed, kicked, and ran. uh-huh. played w/ a bunch, eh ? mating season is inot december, so go check it out !

aside - she kept one for home, and while researching what they need found out there are a lot of dififerent types of tarantula and some are REALLY cool looking ! and very aggressive. and huuuuuge !
