I read the Wikipedia entry about knee replacement surgery, and now I am trying not to think about it - I was getting a little woozy. I am sorry you have to have it, but glad that since you do, you're going ahead with it. I wish you a very speedy recovery.

Dang! Speedy recovery to you. My dad had his knee replaced maybe 15 years ago and stated "I wish that the technogolgy had been available 40 years ago". "it would have alleviated a lot of pain".
They have come a long way with the technology now. I bet you'll be anxious to try out the new knee!?

First, my sincere thanks to one and all for your good wishes. Second, the operation (Tuesday at 7 am) was successful. Third, I am back home this afternoon (Friday). Fourth, my re-hab seems to be going well and I expect rapid recovery. Finally, I want to respond individually to some of the better remarks, as I get time. Again, thanks to all.

Yeah, they have WIFI and I took my machine. Unfortunately, they block outgoing e-mail and most posts. I could post to the RV forum I'm in, but not Uutah. So, I could keep up with all that was going on here, but couldn't respond. (I needed that kid that broke the porn filter.)

Thanks, Bo. I wanted to have this done 10 years ago, but the Doc said the materials would only last 10-15 years. He had me wait until now, and the materials now last 20 years or more. I've lived with it for at least 30 years, but it just kept getting worse.

Had my first at home physical therapy today. First thing he says is, the doctors always tell you the surgery is almost painless. The pain comes from the therapy.

The new knee doesn't know how to bend and doesn't want to hear it. So, they brought a machine that "trains" it. The machine is called a CPM, which I'm sure stands for Corporal Punishment Machine. It must be a used device, because the label showed it was originally shipped to Guantanamo Bay. I did a google on "Rack" and there was a picture of this thing. Too hours of having this thing bend your knee and you'll swear off walking forever. "Yes, I killed Lincoln and planned 9/11. sir."

More to come, I'm afraid.

OK, Nurse Beulah came by today and changed the dressing, allowing my wife to snap a photo. The nurse says the incision is 6 3/4 inches long (looks longer to me) with 36 staples.

I've known a few people who've gone through the process and they all say that same thing.......the rehab after the surgery is the worst part. However - they are all better than new and moving better than ever. They all state that if they had to do it over again, they would because the end result was so fantastic. You'll be up and going again in no time! :2thumbs:

How are you doing Stan?

As everyone says, the re-hab is the tough part. I had been having almost no pain, then a new PT lady came yesterday and decided my leg wasn't going straight enough or bending enough. She got it straight, then increased the range of motion quite a lot. My torture machine does the rest. Anyway, they think I'm doing great, but I now have pain.

The dressing is off for good, so I was able to shower today...that was nice.

Thanks for asking, Tanya.

Glad to hear you are doing ok. I hope the rehab continues in the right direction. I do wonder what the saw preference of doctors is ... Dewalt or Mikita? One of those burning questions I have. I always hear "4 out of 5 doctors recommend.... (fill in the blank)" But for some reason, I never hear what brand of saw they prefer. :lol8: Seriously, nasty surgery but worth it if it works. Get well soon :2thumbs:

Thanks, Scott. I'll try to remember to ask the Doc his brand preference in saws. From all the bruising, it could have been sharper, less need for hammer and chisel.

Hey Stan - glad things are progressing & hope things continue to improve!

This "CPM" thing - kind of a sling that your heel sits in, and it pushes it up toward your butt while you're lying down, then back out straight again, right?

If so, I'll never forget the torture that was my night with a CPM machine... Had a knee repair (open reduction) after a total dislocation (very ugly) and when the cast came off the knee was totally immobilized by internal scar tissue. Had to put me under a general anesthetic and c-r-a-n-k the knee 'til it bent all the way (closed manipulation). When I woke up, my knee was screaming at me every 15 minutes as the machine wound up and down, preventing new scar tissue from forming. I think it was the worst night's sleep I've ever had. About 12 hours straight of the stupid thing. I still shudder to think of it. On the positive side, the knee has stayed strong even without either cruciate ligament. On the negative - if it ever loosens up, ACL reconstruction and another date with CPM!

Hope you're getting some ultimate pain killers!

sparker1
10-18-2007, 08:53 AM
Thanks, Kev. You have described perfectly the CPM, otherwise known as The Rack. I increase the Range by 5 degrees each time (twice a day) I use it, up to 110 degrees next usage.

Actually, the CPM isn't so bad. The Physical Terrorist actually laughs as she inflicts pain by bending the knee beyond the point I can reach on my own. I must say, my flexibility is improving daily. I take the limit of Tylenol, not wanting to get involved with Percocet.
