Crowded in Zion - October 4-7

Just a heads up.... the ACA will be holding an event for their membership in Zion on October 4-7, 2007.

What this means to everyone else is many of the easy to intermediate trade routes in and around Zion National Park will be clogged and crowded. Probably a good weekend to avoid Zion if you fit this category.

The more difficult routes and under the radar routes are usually not a problem during ACA events.

This has been a public service announcement..... we will now return you to our regularly schedule programing.

We have these nice little cabins that are cheap and usually just rent off the road too, if you call and get the usual "we are full' on the hotel when you call at the last minute. Let me know though and I will get you a great room at a great price! I can't help you on the golf since I don't run that or the restaurant, but the green fees I think are only $10!

It's a wonderful place for groups!

The main house has 2 bedrooms, with 4 Queen beds. There is also 3 Queen Sofa Beds. Then you can add the attached rooms: 2 homestead rooms, 2 cabinstyle rooms. We are changing the meeting room over into another huge bedrooms in November. That will have several beds and maybe a couple of sofa beds. Each bedroom has its own bathroom and private entrance.

The East Fork of the Virgin River is right out the Kitchen Door. Just don't sleep walk!

It has quite the history too! The "homestead rooms" are the house my grandparents built in 1931 when they homesteaded here in Mt. Carmel Jct. My Grandpa died in 1961 but my Grandma eventually built around it. The outside attached rooms each have their own private entrances because she lived in the main house and rented the other rooms to guests.

Christopher is sweet... lost his wife a couple of months ago and is a true pioneer in the canyoneering community. He is from Ireland at at an age that he lived through quite a bit there. As I said... wonderful man. Okay... so he is handsome too. :haha:

No shuttle service. He gets to spend time with me (I am not too horrible looking you know! :lol8: ) and I get to spend time with him... I also tested for a canyon leader in ACA,passed and am currently doing that.(there are 9 of us from the western states)

4 people had a permit to camp in the narrows while the others were going out MIA.
our start was delayed, we dawdled in the canyon and were not proficient in getting down the rappels.
arrived at the climbout at 630pm so we stayed put til morning.
not the most comfortable night I've spent but it was warm around the fire.
next time will be better.

Just curious.... did the Narrows group continue out the Narrows the next day or escape via the MIA?

I always carry an Emergency Mylar Sleeping Bag with me. They are only $2.50 at Recreation Outlet. They make those unexpected nights out a little more enjoyable.

Don't buy the Emergency Mylar Blankets, they are only about 1/2 as warm and will let wind,rain and snow in. You can always take your knife and slit the side of the sleeping bag and turn it into a blanket if required. I carry this in my Possibles Bag along with my Bic lighter, headlamp and water purification tablets.... among other items.

the narrows group did continue down and out the narrows, making it back to the Ponderosa about 6pm, in plenty of time for the evening dinner.

I've seen those Mylar bags and might get one for myself. My emergency bivy is with Ram in Ft Collins, otherwise I would have had it with me. Looked at my fleece yesterday and I had a few burn holes from the flying embers, as did most others.

I think I'll classify this as a semi-epic since there was never any danger to anyone in the party! But it is one from which to learn.

To the best of my knowledge anything I have posted concerning the ACA or is leadership is factual. If there is a specific error I would be more then happy to correct it if provided more acurate information.

I'm not trying to be a smartass..... I really don't know which specific item has your panties in a bunch.

No more broken bones (knock on bone), car crashes (hate those). flat tires (they happen), speeding tickets (slow down!), getting lost (temporairily disoriented :ne_nau: ), running out of gas (Powergel! :haha: ), wet and muddy roads (comes with the territory) and I know what you mean about needing 4wd....someday?!
