KSL News) An 18-year-old man is in jail for allegedly beating another man to death with a metal pipe or rod.

Police say Christopher Hewitt and two other men were hiking up Neffs Canyon late Friday night. They say Hewitt pulled out a metal pipe or rod and began beating the two men.

One got away. The other, 19-year-old Benjamin Link, was killed.

Hewitt left the scene but later turned himself in.

The man who got away says the beating was "unwarranted." Hewitt's explanation won't come out until court.

Hewitt was booked on investigation of murder and attempted murder.

I'm thinking it wasn't necessarily just a nice trip out in the countryside. Perhaps something less than legit was going on? On the other hand, maybe the victims disparaged the assailant's girlfriend or something. Who knows?

I just came out of Neff's a couple of hours before this happened :eek2:

This is a famous spot for kids smoking pot, but such violence... wow

Man, no known motive at this point. :eek2:

How far away from the trailhead was this? I'm wondering how far he packed a lead pipe.

That's horrible. I'm up in that canyon once a month or so, and if you get there early you can have the whole thing to yourself for hours. I used to be freaked out by the idea of running into a mountain lion or cougar, now I have to watch out for psychos.

(I'm insensitive, I know)

Where do you actually get a "lead" pipe, or is that just a bad description of a steel pipe?

This is one reason I usually hike with a sidearm.
