Wish I could make another what I am sure will be a fun and exciting trip, but we have a family reunion that weekend...

Why does family always have to get in the way of fun?

Ya, me too. I prefer the Swell too I'd be down with any combo of the following:

Squeeze
Iron Wash
Quandary
Music
Knotted Rope

I vote for the Swell. All of you Zion snobs need to expand your horizons, especially you Christian...it's time to bring the Alpha male to the San Rafael.

The Squeeze Saturday, down Quandry/up Knotted Rope Sunday could be fun. They'd both be full days but worth it. If we went up Knotted Rope we could use our mad climbing skills!

Woa there cowboys. I never said I wouldn't come up to the evil part of Utah. Man I got all sorts of people saying all sorts of things. I figure you bitches came to my part of the world so why can't I come up to yours?

Here's the deal and the rules:
1 - I won't be able to leave Vegas till 4:00 friday. So you'd better choose something as close as possible.
2- no tight stuff, I like my belly just as it is and I sure the hell don't want to be scraping no hair or fat off.
3 - Cody is like a 80% on coming.
4 - I'm not interested in hiking all over the damn place on no damn death marches. So try to choose something that will leave me with enough energy to push the gas pedal home Sunday night.

Other than that I leave myslef in your hands. We can't let Dan plan this thing or he'll try to kill me (you know since I successfuly debunked all of his arguments). Who's in charge? Oh I forgot rule 5 - when I arrive whoever planned this thing must relinquish the role of Alpha to the one, true, Alpha Male.

The squeeze has a 2-3 hour approach, and 2 hour exit, maybe 5 hrs in the canyon. Mostly flat except one big climb. Can you handle that?

I think the drive is about 6 hours from Vegas, depending on how fast you like to rally the truck over the desert dirt roads.

Ummm my guess is that that "one big climb" will be considered a death march if you did the route I did. Bottom up and into the canyon and out the bottom to the car. There ain't no switchbacks on the "up" part.

I've never heard so much whining. :bore: I guess we could airlift you to the top...kinda expensive. Or you could hire some sherpas...that would require a way to transport livestock though...but I don't think Llamas are all that unruly? I'm just trying to think of some possible solutions for you.:haha:

Seriously dude, you'll live. Neither of the canyons are all that tight. The approach to the Squeeze is a bit of a pain but you get all of the elevation gain out of the way first...and in the morning hours. The exit is along the Muddy...heel to toe type stuff. Quandry's approach is quick and easy too. Elevation is at the start but doesn't take more than 20 to 30 minutes...tops. Exit is the same as the Squeeze...back down the Muddy. Both canyons should have quite a bit of water in them as well and, if we're lucky, we might just get flashed on!

I expect there will be some dropouts and what not, so if people are still interested, let them put in their name, and we will sort it out as the date gets more near. We could always do two groups, and do different canyons each day, if we needed to.

Edit: Didn't realize Rock had edited the other list... I will now relinquish all power to the TRUE alpha.

OK, I just updated the guest list. So far, there are 15 people signed up. This is looking like a SWELL partay! We'll need to divide the group up into either two or three smaller groups, or just stagger the canyons so that half the group does Quandary/Knotted Rope the first day, the other half does the Squeeze and vice versa.

I'll volunteer to bring along some homemade avocado salsa, if someone else brings chips.

Looked at the list and realized that there are way too many people coming. Even looks like a chic or two. I think the drive is about 6 hours from Vegas, depending on how fast you like to rally the truck over the desert dirt roads.

Are the dirt roads mandatory? Maybe I can bring the car up and save on gas?

Are you guys trying to kill me? How do the hikes compare to the zion stuff? What can i expect? Do i need to start shooting the juice now in order to get ready? FYI - I'm bringing my own sexy underwear this time.

rockgremlin
08-14-2007, 07:28 PM
Adam - Yes, bring along one of the hot babes from your entourage (or two!) Make sure they're aware of the dress code (or undress code :naughty: )

Nelson - Lots of dirt roads to get to where we're going, but the good news is that the dirt roads are all very well graded and maintained. Bring you and your banter - if someone doesn't like you, they can always hike in the other group -- since the party list is so large, I think we'll divide and conquer. (Day one = Group A does the Squeeze, group B does the Quandary loop, Day two = vice versa)

uhmmm dude... leave the myspace chicks at home!

lemme throw some wisdom down on you!
never bring a girl on a trip w/ a bunch of dudes.
save those trips for when you go solo.
find a nice easy canyon, do it a few times, then take said girl and be her hero! much better for her experience, for your experience and the experience of your canyon brothers who may not want to deal w/ unknown myspace canyon noob.

furthermore, if MY wife finds out she couldnt go on a trip and some random girl did go.... well that my friend makes things difficult for me.
and i dont like things being difficult for me, see where this is going? :lol8:

but now there is the "lap dance" clause.
if said girl will preform group lap dances for your canyon brethern, her presence would not only be welcomed but would be mandatory!

actually now that i think about it, any girl that would follow a bunch of dudes through a canyon and then preform said lap dances might be one hell of a catch. :naughty:

Alright then, I personally agree with marc that a totally newb girl would be a downer as far as the trip goes, which is why I asked again if you were serious about me bringing a girl. But one of the girlys is quite outdoors inclined (rock climbs, hikes, etc) if she wants to come I will bring her. If not, I will leave the girlys out.

My parents ( in their 80's) were in a Cat 4 in FL a few years back. They now live in Az.
I was there for one week and we cooked on camp stoves and use a generator to run fans and eat what wasn't ruined. We didn't see the Nat'l Guard until 5 days later. I patched more roofs in the neighborhood with blue tarps --all elderly folks homes---than I would ever want to. It was raining every day--Aug in FL with upper 90's temps and about 98% humidity, no power, phone or running water.

It wasn't any fun, I can tell you.

If you really are stuck there-- spare water, batteries and light, anything that can hold extra water, fill bathtub, charge up cell phone battery ( although cell towers went down in FL and no cell service for a while).
Food etc. Any treatment tablets for water. I am not kidding, it can be survival time for real if you have no services and everyone is freaking out.

Good luck and hope it just glances by.

Hey guys, finally back from the Pacific Northwest, and trying to sort out this weekend. Looks like the list of attendees is getting big, so we will probably want two groups. My plans are shaping up as such:

Saturday: The Squeeze. I am planning on going with Chris, Porter (not on the list yet), myself, and whoever else wants to join, (John Varn?)

Sunday: Quandary Direct: Same groups?

Camp: Hidden Splendor. I'll be there LATE Friday night. Big party should be scheduled for Saturday night... Long drive home Sunday.

Should be most excellent.

We will be camping at Hidden Splendor. It is about an hour of dirt road to get there, but it is in good condition, usually. Car camping is the norm. And, if you are wondering, I will be in another group because I don't want to carry your ass out of there when you can't make it. We ain't in Zion anymore Todo. :lol8:

Ok, I updated the list on the first page and broke it up into two groups. If anyone doesn't like the groups, we can rearrange them. I just went with the most logical arrangement. And since the Dirty Jocks Team apparently got first picks on all the entertainment (i.e. Nelson brothers), I went ahead and selected John Varn and Matt's Colorado entourage to join up with Team Apostate.

Now, onto pressing matters... Should we set up some potluck goodness for Saturday night? Possibly a case or two of rockstars?

Also, let's all camp at Hidden Splendor, and be sure to CROSS the airstrip. There is a nice group site that overlooks the muddy, down where the old access road used to drop down to the river, before the BLM gated it off. It is pretty easy to figure out.

Everyone okay navigating to the Splendor?

Chris, you'll be on dirt roads for a good 45 minutes to an hour depending on their condition and how fast you want to drive. There are several ways to get there but exit 129 off of I-70 is the most straight forward approach. I seem to remember that the mileposts were changed recently and 129 is now 131? Can anyone clarify that?

Get your hands on a Utah Road Atlas or something like it so you can navigate. That or I can PM you more specific directions for once you get off the interstate. The Hidden Splendor mine/airfield is the end of the line. If you miss it, you'll be floating the Muddy.

Man I feel so loved. How much dirt road doI have to drive? I'm thinking of bringing my car instead of the truck. Where are we camping? What kind of camping? Those of us that are Swell noobs need to be walked through this thing. Looks like Dan will be in his own group, I don't blame him since he was so outwitted last time.

Chris, you'll be on dirt roads for a good 45 minutes to an hour depending on their condition and how fast you want to drive. Cody and I will leave around 4 vegas time so hopefully we'll arrive around 11-12 your time. I'll PM you for some better directions but we've decided to just bring my truck so we can fit more hookers.

What should we bring for Saturday night? Anybody want some real beer brought up?

How do these canyons compare to Zion? If I were to try to explain to my bro what to expect, which canyon in Zion would be a good example (hiking wise). I think Shane has the GPS points so we should be able to navigate to the airstrip. Getting excited.

:lol8:

Actually, I want to do the Squeeze Saturday, and since your group isn't doing it Saturday, I made my own plans. Don't worry though, I'll still run you into the ground Saturday night, with my dazzling display of doctrinal understanding and unabashed ability to call out all hypocrites who's lamps aren't quite full... :roflol: I think there is a reason you are bringing your brother, it's clear you need some reinforcements, sucka. :bootyshake:

Cody will be drunk by 8:00 saturday night. His 'lamp' is definately out of oil. I'll have to rely on Justins & Mike's prowness to protect my doctrinal virginity.

Wanted to confirm my participation in team lamp shade, and also anyone got an idea how full these are as I've never been in squeeze and only peered over at quandary direct, I'd assume I'd need to bring at least my 3/2 shorty but should I bother with my 3/4 full? I'm skinny as hell but somehow do well in the cold.

OK, the standard rules apply. New guy must pass the quiz:

1) Who is the Emperor?

2) Your anchor fails while you are on rappel. You are 95 feet from the canyon bottom, there is no wind, and it is a free-hanging rappel. What is your velocity when you strike the canyon bottom? (in feet/second)

3) How many slot canyons are featured on Climb-Utah.com?

4) If Jane tramples twice as much cryptobiotic soil as Susan, but not half as much as Jason, how much more cryptobiotic soil will she have to trample before the NPS closes public access to the Fiery Furnace?

5) What cheese goes best with apricot hefe-weizen?

Is this Shawn who posted in the Canyons group on Yahoo? Given how large the group already is, I say we let him tag along. I think he has some bigwall experience and what not, so he probably isn't a virgin n00b. Hell, we're letting everyone else come too...

FWIW, I think there will be a woman in attendance for Saturday squeeze on Team Apostate, so I think we take an early 1-0 lead. What's more, she ain't off myspace...

All right we're on. Cody and I wil leave Vegas around 3:00-4:00 we've got good directions and the GPS points from Shane's stuff.

Cody and I will be barbecuing Steaks for ourselves saturday night. For everybody else (potluck style) we'll be doing siskabobs (sp?) of red, yellow, and green peppers with onion and corn. I've also got a large vegetable tray with dip for everybody.

Watch for us on the road late that night, you know what i drive so if we go right past you or you see headlights wondering around in the wilderness come save us, or at least send the single female to come and save us.

I beleive in god so i'm sure he'll guide me so i can save the wayward agnostic souls.

Weather Issues:

Saturday looks good.

Sunday calls for a 30% chance of thundershowers in the afternoon. In the chance that it decides to rain in our neck of the woods on Sunday, I would rather be in Quandary Canyon ~ NOT The Squeeze. Anyone else disagree?

FOX
08-24-2007, 10:34 AM
Yes and no. I think as long as we get an early start Sunday we'll be okay...like 6 or 7AM. When the Squeeze flashed us last time I remember we dropped in at 1PM and the storm hit us around 3PM. If we're in the canyon by 9 or 9:30, we should be out by 1PM. We just won't know for sure until we can see what the sky is doing Sunday morning. So, no rain Saturday or is it similar to Sunday...afternoon showers? If that's the case, residual flow might be an issue too. I think if the Muddy is flowing like the Colorado...that'll be our first clue :lol8:

rockgremlin
08-24-2007, 10:45 AM
Saturday is golden. Partly cloudy...highs over 100.

Saturday night the clouds move in (20% chance of rain overnight), and then Sunday there's a 30% chance of showers in the afternoon. My take is...if we're on the trail by 6:30am, we're through most of the tightest stuff in Quandary before noon. Since the Squeeze has such a lengthy approach, we might be in the narrowest part of the canyon when/if it decides to turn nasty -- especially considering our large group size, and also if the water levels in the Squeeze are low, then it will slow us down considerably as well.

Something to think about....

FOX
08-24-2007, 10:51 AM
I agree. I don't want to get flashed again...I think we used our "get-out-of-jail-free-card-because-we-were-stupid" the last time. Maybe we could do a pre-dawn departure and get up the slopes before sunrise?

rockgremlin
08-24-2007, 10:57 AM
I guess it will ultimately come down to a group decision, but I just wanted to sound the alarm on the whole weather issue. Flash floods in the Squeeze -- I've been to this movie before, I don't need to see it again.

FOX
08-24-2007, 11:02 AM
The last time you and I ran the Squeeze, we did the canyon in 3.5 hours. The potholes were full, the tyrolean was still in place and there were only two of us. I agree that it'll probably take us twice as long with the group size, especially if water is low and we have to deal with the keeper that the tyrolean made so easy to overcome. But on the upside, we'll have an experienced team this time and that's something we didn't have when we got flashed. And everyone has their own belay device. We won't be passing an 8 around telling people not to drop it. :lol8:
