I just got back from Colorado - but didn't have the chance to cross the border.
I can't wait to come back. A buddy and I are hoping to hike in the Swell in November. I definitely wish I could see Utah more, and especially more with my wife!
Hey, Carpey, you'll think this is funny. I was surfing some of your journal page and came across this image...

I started there once, with no map. After a couple wrong turns, I was going up Kelly's Grade. By the time I backtracked, it was getting too dark to go on. I'll go another time. I'd love to spend the night there and wake up to the sunrise, but I don't sleep on the ground anymore.

you really should try the next time you're in the Page area. It really is a wonderful place and you will like it
And normally the way to Alstrom Point is easy to find. Only the last 2 miles are a little bit thricky and you'll need HC.
Hm, an overnight stay at this viewpoint is something I wanna do in the future. And then hopefully it'll be a night with a clear bright full moon

Thanks! Yup - it was all good. Quite a few met up at the campsite. Malia and friends took me into some cool spots, good for newbies like me: West Leprechaun, West Blarney, and Hog 1, plus Cassidy in Capitol Reef, too. Then off to the Escalante area, where I, at least, managed to avoid needing rescue.
Only downside to the trip so far is that I left my camera and all its accoutrements on the plane on the way down, and ended up buying the very cheapest thing that Walmart had out of desperation. $85 piece of crap, but it's taken over a thousand photos in the last 8 days, and a couple of them have turned out OK so far...

Some really great shots in here. I haven't been taking many landscapes recently since most my free time has been spent on the bike and taking biking related photos. Definitely need to get back to S Utah soon for some hiking and photo taking. Here are a few of my old favorites, really need to get back down there to try them out with some better equipment one of these days.

When did you take that shot of the Tree in Crack Canyon? The wash has shifted and it wont be around for much longer.

It was probably in '06 or something. The others were all more recent. It is just one of my favorite trees so I included it.

That would've been the March '06 trip I believe. I've got a nice B&W of it I used for my UVSC photo class. It was definitely a sweet looking tree.

Here's my first image with my new Christmas present - a Canon 40D. Tripod shot at 1/100, f22, and 76 mm. Used Gimp to auto-adjust the levels, tweaked the highend curves just a little, and used the unsharp mask to sharpen just a bit.
While I was shooting, 4 other people pulled over to take some shots as well. One lady was certain that some Buddhists actually used the small cave for ceremonies. We told her they didn't but we should have let her continue to believe it to add to the aura of the place.

I have stopped to photograph Church Rock on a number of occasions, but never with snow on the ground. We have seen that there is a road that seems to lead to the opening, but we have never gone up there, since there is a cattle fence to cross, and that usually means it is private property. Have you (or anyone reading this) been up there? Is there a cave, alcove, tunnel, elevator leading to a secret CIA prison, anything?

Brewhaha - thanks for the nostalgia. I drove past that rock every day on my way to work for almost two years. I desperately, desperately miss that place!!
I noticed you had "Brewhaha Photography" tattooed in the lower right. Is this a business, or just a collection of images you have put together? Either way, I'd like to see some of the other images in your collection -- especially around that part of Utah I consider "home."
Thanks!

The "Brewhaha Photography" was just a watermark put on there by Picasa. I was just messing around to see what it looked like. I'll try and get you more pics so you won't feel completely homesick. BTW, you should see the snow here.
