Here is anther shot I took while climbing Devils Castle in a snow storm. This was really strange because we were fogged in and could only see 20' most of the day. But suddenly the clouds parted for about 30 seconds and offered this shot. I have this pic enlarged and mounted in my family room.

Found this guy in the back yard (Pennsylvania). He is known as a Argiope aurantia - Yellow Garden Spider. I know its not the best picture but I just took this about an hour ago using macro mode from an inch away, I thought he was going to bite me. I used my 6 year old Sony 2mp beater camera. So with that in mind I was pleased with the result

He was looking for lunch near Lewis Peak and his tail will turn red when he grows up. This is what a 4x, image stabilized, pocket camera can do. (Canon SD850 IS Digital Elph) Not too bad but better lens' make better pictures.

:soapbox: a it-should-be-wild life shot. turpentine creek exotic animal shelter, cruelest place i have ever seen. how selfish do you have to be to think confining an animal to a 20x20, or if they are lucky 20x50, foot cage is doing that animal a favor ? to die in slow misery, spirit slowly destroyed, removed from its habitat so some human can pat itself on the back. this place was full of big cats in particular. cages 3-5 body lengths big in any given direction. many had mange and most were pathetically despondent. lifeless eyes w/ no joy left in them. god it made me sick.

all this monkey did was pace its cell back and forth. a few steps left, a few steps right, over and over and over.

I think that anything can be interesting, if you look close enough. This spider was small enough to stand on a pencil eraser and not hang over the edge, most people wouldn't even notice him.

Anyways, I call it "peekaboo." This gal was very curious, but would use the cliff as a nice wall to hide behind.

Oh I know what the D200 can do, even with the low level glass. I got the chance to play with one back in April and my buddy from work just got one. The best I can hope for is for one to literally fall in my lap at this point in my life, maybe later in the year or next year will be a better year for worldly possesions I covet....

Unsharp mask(or smart sharpen), lab sharpening and some layer work might have touched this up a bit. Also you loose some of that sharpness when you compress to jpeg along with the added artifact

This is from tonight. The big storm pushed down an enormous herd of elk down pretty low on the mountains. After work, I hiked up about a half mile, trying not to stir any of them up. This is from about 150-200? yards away, uncropped. 40D, 1.4x, 600mm lens, 5.6, ISO1600. The light was fading quick.

Biggest elk I've ever photographed that wasn't domesticated or interacting with humans in some form. I was excited to get the chance. In all, I estimate the herd at 150 head. It was HUGE.

Carpey,

That shot of the Elk is great!
Does anyone know why I can't get crisper images at max focal length... I have a Nikon 55-200 kit lens with V/R, shooting w/ D200. Sometimes I use a 2x teleconverter... do you think it's because of my cheap lens, or maybe because the shutter is wide open? Maybe something else I'm doing wrong...? Anyway, I know this isn't a photography class forum, I was just curious because I'm not "school trained" in photography.

Any advice is appreciated.

There could be a variety of reasons. One, is technique, which creates motion blur. Second would be equipment, which would create a type of gaussian blur, most likely.

In your setup, a couple of things stick out. With a 2x stacked on a zoom lens, you are giving up significant sharpness, plus your aperture will be effectively smaller, so you shutter speed will be longer, which means more chance for motion blur. And since you are doubled with an extender, motion blur is enhanced even more... Short story? Stop down, and shoot off a tripod. If you need fast shutter speeds, you have to buy faster glass. On the long end, that means lotsa cabbage.

So yeah, basically, make sure your shutter speed is high, with the 2x and your zoom lens, I'd say it needs to be at least 1/500th to get good handheld shots, if not faster.

Hope that helps.

This one is almost straight out of the camera... just adjusted the levels a bit. Does anyone have a 70-200 nikon f2.8 they don't want anymore...? I think I'm in love :slobber1:

Great Short-Eared Owl photo. Your vehicle is the best blind if you are on a road. Once the door opens and you step out most wildlife will flee. The RTH is also good but try to increase the depth of field or your focusing. The post where he stands is in focus but not his eye. In wildlife photography, regardless of the species the eye is the main focal point.

The beauty of digital is taking multiple photos and not going through a $5 roll of film to get one shot. B&H has good buys and I have used them for many years, both at work n home.

Keep shootin'!

You know what, you have a point here, ALTHOUGH there is always composition and lighting rules(cant fix everything and noise is more pragmatic). I was just playing around with photoshop fine tuning my layering/masking skills and was just thinking how nice it was I could just fire away at will in NEF(Nikon RAW) and with Capture NX(THEE digital darkroom) and tweak them, with an input to CS2 to do whatever. I have many shots that I took one and did countless black and whites, color takes and in plenty of filters. I can only imagine the curve on film learning the how to do an unsharp mask, pushing or pulling and the like. I suppose Im guilty as charged as I take a shot knowing what Ill have to do to fix it later....

There are actually four deer in the second shot - but the fourth is hiding behind the deer on the right edge of the frame. (Look for it's ear).

I think we counted fourteen deer in the herd. I've never seen so many mule deer together in one place.

It's still a little early in the season for the Bear River Refuge - most of the marsh is still iced over, there were only a small sampling of birds. Mostly Tundra Swans and Canada Geese. But, the long ice vistas stretching out the lake were beautiful.

I've been reading Refuge (http://www.coyoteclan.com/books/refuge.html) by Terry Tempest Williams, and she has such amazing descriptions of the birds that live in the delta. I HAVE to go back to get some pictures of Ibises and Pelicans. (I didn't even know we had Pelicans in Utah!

Apparently there are two photography blinds (http://www.fws.gov/bearriver/photography.html) out there. Maybe I'll look into reserving one for a day.

Don't know. He was wandering around outside the Visitor Center at the Grand Canyon. I was a little concerned for him until a ranger came by. The ranger took out his camera got a few shots of the Elk and started laughing. If he wasn't concerned, I guess the Elk will be OK.

The Elk had a friend who seemed to be trying to help him get the rope off. They would butt heads for a while and then give up. I think the other Elk finally figured out that if he got the rope off of his buddy, it would probably end up on him.

This was an amazing sight, Elephant Seals along the CA coast, end of April. The large (5000 lb) males were already back at sea. These are females with their young, they'll be going to sea soon. I need to go back next March to shoot the big guys
sparring over the girls.

I ran into some interesting critters in the Swell this weekend. The toads and the bat were in Calf Canyon. The bat was just crawling on the ground near a pond--kinda strange.

I stopped on the trail to get a photo of this gopher snake, but it tried getting away from me by crawling up into my wife's 4-wheeler. It took about 10 minutes to get it to come back out.

Love the pics, Dennis! I'd be willing to bet that bat had rabies, though :eek2:. Totally not normal for it to be out during daylight, let alone crawling around on the ground. Great shots of it, though!

The Toad Love photo made me laugh - it's cute !
