Took last Friday (July 20th) off to dash up Lone Peak with a friend of mine. I had never attempted the peak before. We did a modified version of the Jacobs Ladder trail, hiking up the jeep "trail" to Movie Rock, then connecting to the Jacobs Ladder trail proper. I made the summit. That cirque is just breathtakingly beautiful. But, my goodness, what a bitch of a climb to get there! We started at 6:15AM and thus evaded the heat until the way down. The way down was a scorcher. The bottom of the hike is a lot of work, and the landscape is thrashed by jeep and motorcycle abuse.

I'd rate is as the toughest Wasatch hike I've done, just above Broads Fork Twins. It took us 10.5 hours total. Wow. That summit is awesome. The dropoffs are heart stopping.

Forgot to mention that I underestimated water needs. Brought 5 liters, caching 1 about an hour and half into the hike. This was not enough. There was a small trickle of water and a couple small pools just below the cirque, the only water we encountered anywhere on the mountain. My buddy had some iodine tablets with him that we put to use, treating some water on the way down. That extra liter held me over until I got back to the cache, which by the time we got to it was disgusting and hot, but it was much needed.
