Paul Nelson Reporting

Fire crews will be out in force in Sandy looking for people shooting illegal fireworks and trying to prevent wildfires, but what exactly are they looking for?

Fire officials in Sandy say they're mostly worried about a specific kind of firework.

Sandy City Assistant Fire Chief Don Rosenkratz says they are most concerned about the fireworks that go up above rooftops.

Rosenkratz says it can get tricky pinpointing who is shooting off these fireworks from far away. That's why they'll look at every street up close. He says, "It's really easy once you get close to them and tell where they came from. They'll usually leave a pretty good trail."

They also have thermal imaging cameras they could use. Rosenkratz says, "If you had that camera out and you were watching someone you could see them light [fireworks] really well, and you could see the heat trail go up."

Officials are also asking Sandy residents to identify anyone they know shooting illegal fireworks.

 Give it up already. Talk about taking our freedoms away... This has more of an impact on our liberties (and the right to celebrate them) than any phone tapping ever did.

Are you kidding? The ability to communicate privately without fear of government monitoring is a less important right than shooting balls of fire into the air? Especially balls of fire that are already illegal under state law?

Take a drive west down 5300 South between 1-15 and Redwood Road and tell me if you think the fire danger is being overstated. There's miles of dead and dry grasses on either side of the road way, separated by from people's homes by chain link fencing.

Then they should ban it in that area. Records show that driveways have been non flammable since 1976.

Donnys tips for getting away with illegal fireworks:

Light off a bunch at once, then stop for awhile, giving the cops that respond nothing to see, once they roll by, wait 5 minutes and do it again. After you do this a couple of times, they may sit around the corner and wait, watch for this, and mix up your routine.

Have some legal works as cover.

Keep the illegal stuff seperate from the legal stuff, so when a cop shows up you can let him look at your legal stuff. Have a few illegal firecrackers near your safe stuff, if the cop isn't believing you when you claim the illegal stuff isn't coming from you, let him find the firecrackers. A classic throw the dog a bone ploy.

Don't light off bottle rockets, everyone hates them, I hate them (I've seen one wedged into an eye socket), they are inherently unsafe, you put one in my yard and I'm gonna do something about it. When I get a brick of bottle rockets in a combo pack I soak them in a bucket of water and then throw them away. Worthless.

Hide those mortar tubes! Every cop and fireman knows what they look like, they are on the hunt for them.

Going mobile is the easiest way to avoid getting busted, it's also the most dangerous so I will not expand on that topic.

Please don't choose grassy fields and foothills as your firework backdrops, use your brain.

Speaking of brains, if you hold larger firecrackers like m80s in your hand, and do the light-it-and-toss-it routine, you'll eventually blow off your damn fingers. Don't do it.

Of course, you could stick to the legal stuff or catch a fireworks show and avoid all the hassle, that's mostly how I roll these days.

That's hilarious Donny!! I find it so humorous because that's what I do at this time every year too. The light-off-a-bunch-at-once-and-wait routine works like a charm.

Also effective is lighting them in your backyard, if you happen to live in a crowded neighborhood, it'll take a little more time for the cops to figure out which side of the block the fireworks are coming from, and then pinpoint a house. If the cops roll up, go inside and turn out all the lights.
